Elves: What happened???

Okay, but seriously? DAO's elves were short humans with pointy ears. That's all. There was nothing intimidating about them, or cool, or unique. Seriously, how people can talk up those "elves" is beyond me.
Apparently, the new elves are hit or miss among fans, but I can't help but think that it's partially because of stubborn fans deciding they hate everything different about DA2. Frankly, I think the new elves are captivating. They look exotic and gorgeous most of the time. They look like their own magical species. The new elf design was one of the things I think Bioware did absolutely right in DA2. And I happen to think Fenris looks very much more intimidating than the uber-bland DAO elves. He looks dangerous and fierce, while still being attractive. Merrill looks pretty and otherworldly. Also, they aren't obnoxiously short, you can look at them eye to eye.
I even downloaded a mod to change DAO elf warden to look more like DA2 elves, with the flat nose bridge and big eyes. It kills me that I can't mod every elven NPC that way.
I mean, to each one's own and no one is ever going to agree on every art design choice Bioware makes. That goes without saying. But I really hope they don't change the elves. Giving them a unique look really helped the player immerse into the world, at least, it did for me.

But YES, of course there are going to be some bad looking elves. Just like there are bad looking humans. Some people are just ugly. Realism... yay.

Why do the elves in DA2 look like anorexic mannaquins? Thier faces are freakish and they are like spider people with huge ears... They may want to look back at the Elves from DAO and fire the art guys from DA2. Fenris is hardly intimidating and yet he's ripping peoples hearts from their chest and Merrill as a romance??? That would be like romancing a giraffe... meh!
The elves look anorexic to you only because you are still (for whatever reason) comparing their body types to that of humans. Doing this is silly because they are not human at all. They are...wait for it....ELVES! Traditional lore (outside of Dragon Age) have always seen Elves as slender humanoids, sometimes even taller than humans, but always thinner. If you don't like what the elves in DA2 look like, that is absolutely fine. You don't find them attractive? That is fine too - they probably won't find you attractive either. Fenris may not look intimidating, because he is after all an elf. He was an elf before he was grafted with lirium, and he is still an elf after he is grafted with lirium. In fact, not looking intimidating is a very useful attribute because that gives him the element of surprise against his foes. Rather than suggesting the designers at BioWare be fired, how about recognising that you are not the final authority on how elves look. Your opinion will be received much more positively and you will look less stupid.
Personally, I love their new design! Very distinctive.

The main probably I have with them in this game is that ears and noses don't really seem to mesh with the rest of the designed. They look sleek and fey, but then have collosal square noses and floppy ears that stick out at 90 degree angles. Give them normal noses and pull the ears back slightly against their heads and they'd be fine.

They are not supposed to be a different species; if they were there would be no half-elves around. On the contrary, the irony that they are the same species, and yet are treated as they are partially due to their supposed differences, makes their situation much more interesting, imo.
Besides, different from Human should not mean ugly; they were too thin and too odd faced; in short: Too disturbingly alien and too far from lore elves. In truth,if Bioware really wanted a radically different species for their world, then why not just create a new one? they did it with the qunari.

I was under the impression that they were, unless racial difference within the same species can generate immortality.
I don't mind their redesign so much, but I do wish they'd put more effort into their faces. It's not that there aren't any good looking (and I don't use 'good looking' to necessarily mean 'attractive') elves, or elves that can be made to look good. There's seemingly a lot of victims of 'we didn't have very long to put this game together' syndrome out there, is all.

I’ve seen many time the argument that in Origins elves looked too much like Humans; this is an argument I don’t get. Why would elves need to look much different from Humans, at all?

Ugly to you perhaps. But your opinion on beauty does not mean that they are indeed ugly. I find them beautiful in their new appearance.
and just to clarify, an elf and a human makes a human child. The elf blood may flow through their veins, and they may look more elf-like, but they are still human. There are no half-elves.
It's actually a lot like the Branded in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and its sequel Radiant Dawn. There are humans (beorc) and laguz (human-esque people who can shift into animal form). When a Laguz mates with a Beorc, the child is in appearance a human. But the Laguz blood flows through their veins and one day a brand surfaces on them.
As they carry blood of both species, this affects them differently. While they may appear human, they age more slowly than humans do. The could live for many decades, and you might not even tell that they have done so because they appear 20-30.

Uhh.. Elves are different from humans. Elves aren't like, a different race of human. You can be white, black, Asian, whatever and you're still human. If you're an elf, you're not human. They are a different species. Maybe like, donkeys and horses or something, they can have kids but we don't see a lot of them running around. Elves are not and have never been in any lore "humans with pointy ears." They're unique.
It's very much your opinion that the elves are "ugly". I think they're gorgeous. What lore are you talking about that these elves are supposedly so far away from? Elves have been anything from tiny sprite like creatures to tall, slender magical humanoids with pointy ears. They have been described as more catlike and delicate in features than humans, and that's exactly what Bioware gave them. The only thing that really defines an elf is their pointy ears, and magical (or at least more magically inclined) existence.
I'm not saying you have to like the DA2 elves or anything. But I have to passionately disagree with your "elves should be just like humans" thing.

They are different species. The reason there are no half elves is beacuse when humans and elves interbreed, the children are born completely human (read Dragon Age: The Calling for confirmation).
And please Bioware, no Origin elves ever again! They actually used the same facial models as humans...they just gave them pointy ears and no facial hair.

Second, that pic of Merrill doesn't do Merrill justice, as having a long neck is not a bad thing. Bioware just did that scene so poorly that it looks horrible.
I also don't think Jethann is that bad looking, but blue eyes and bright ginger hair doesn't really mesh well together
Third, here are the beautiful elves in the game:

the new elf design actually keeps in line with the shriek design. And also, the people who say the elves look like Na'vi because of their ears need to look at where the shrieks ears are. That's more Na'vi than the elves, who aren't Na'vi-esque in my opinion.
and these are unmodded elves.
And that Merrill in the post above mine makes me cry. How could you do that to her?!

Serpieri, two of your pics are furniture elves, which hold no merit to the actual design itself.

It holds merit it shows poor quality - I can also post a lot more like all the Donkey Faced ones.
The pic does do Merril justice - again it shows how poor it is.
So what we have here is - how the new art direction leaves a lot to be desired and how cutting corners/rushing a product is not well recieved.
Glad that you find them beautiful others do not.
