The leg thickness is the same when the characters are brought to matching scale. But because the torso of DA2 design is thinner, the legs are closer together which can make them appear thicker. The rest is difference of the lighting/contrast imo.Wulfram wrote...
The thighs are different too - the DA2 elf actually has them. Arms show a hint of muscle. Also, bigger breasts.

Art Direction: What happened???
But to focus on the actual topic, as has been stated, it was just a case of some of the elves had some damn fine effort put into them - and others - not so much. It was those latter that dragged down the whole direction with the elves.

Are people seriously arguing for busty bootylicious elves? That makes. No sense. Everything we know about them says they are lithe and slighter than humans. Think Nefertiti, not the Venus of Willendorf.
What is supposed to make them attractive to humans is that they are BEAUTIFUL. Amusingly, the majority of the DA2 elves are indeed just the opposite of that. Still, anyone arguing that Merrill does not have a beautifully rendered face is just letting their dislike for the new style in general cloud their judgement. Objectively speaking, she has the second most beautiful face of any Bioware female LI, number one being Jack, who if you removed the tattoos and gave her good hair would basically be a makeup model.
So I was not the only that notices this as well when it came to Jack. +10 to you good sir
Sir this is the interent agruments don't have to make sense...

I accept that. You on the hand have to accept that the brain is going to draw the parallels to the human appearance and make judgements based on that, just the same. Just like having elf design which looks like short human with pointly ears makes people think "hey it looks like short human with pointly ears", having the design which looks like sickly thin human with donkey ears is going to make people think "hey it looks like sickly thin human with donkey ears".
You can force yourself into thinking "oh but that's elf not human, so i should ignore this reaction and think instead it's beautiful~" but this is ultimately no different than what the persons who suffer from eating disorders can do to themselves, and their own perception of the body shape.
So, me thinking elves are attractive is equivalent to me having an eating disorder.... hmm. Interesting.
Guess what, I didn't have to "force" myself into liking the elf body shape. Nor did I have to "force" myself to like the dwarf body shape. I know they're different, because I know it's fantasy, and I have this amazingly awesome ability to reconcile reality and fantasy and see beauty that doesn't exist in the real world. No autographs, please.
PS - the elf "donkey ears" are adorable. Just like an elf should be, imo. Makes 'em look like Hylians from Legend of Zelda (also attractive people.)

No one said that just because they are ugly and their ears are ridiculous long they cannot be cute and adorable; (turns to Fenris) who is cute and adorable? You are!...Yes you are!

Well let me say that I was happy with the game and the romances and interactions etc, no real complaints at all.......until we get to the elves. I can see what the designers tried to do, it probably feels to them like they can't win with ''da:o the elves look like humans with knife ears'' ''DA2 '(insert this entire thread here)"'.
So from someone that loved the game and is not a hater - give the elves some damn shoes please, they look ridiculous running around without them. If not only for some protection? I fear for Fenris getting his foot stepped on when he is fighting an ogre or some such beast! The ears are over the top I agree, now you have all called them donkey ears I just can't stop thinking that when I see it, they just need to be a tad smaller.
The faces are fine, I have no issues here at all, Fenris was beautiful with those puppy eyes and so were many other elves in the game. The body however.....yes they are supposed to be thin but the shape is just wrong some how, I can't imagine snuggling up to something so boney and skeletal like, I had to get a mod to put a trench coat on Fenris just so I didn't have to look at his weird structure.
And yes as you can probaby tell, I'm an elf (Fenris) lover ^^

Yes...we are all haters who can't adapt to change. Pure Comedy.
Anyways, Bio-Age was nice enough to email the elf collage.
So...um where are the furniture elves in Origins?

I have a mod for merril.. gosh took me a while to get use to her, I always left her at her home, fenris is male so is ok if he doens't look that attractive. lol
My new Merril:
Anyway I believe the old saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder applies here i don't have any real problem with the new elves except: GIVE THEM BACK THEY"RE SHOES!...Thank you.
This is Morrigan
This is Merril
Merril still need some work..the ears are a killer..
and I have a confession to make I do have a problem with the new elves aside from they're lack of shoes they're eyes are freaking huge and too anime looking in a semi-realistic game that's just creepy.
I prefer your Merril by far.
I kinda wish bioware just used the LOTR elf design.

my guess is that the eyes are big like that so they can see better in the dark much like a how an Owl has rather large eyes... Of course there is not to go on considering that Bioware does not give us alot ot work with on the subject because of the Elven history is lost... yeah they shot themselves in the foot on that one.
I like them but I would at least like some kind in game of explantion of why they are.

I don't think Orana looks bad except for her makeup. Without that wretched eyeshadow, I think she'd be kinda cute, to be honest.
Cute is about the farthest thing on my mind but ok that's cool you like her.
But yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder…now back to world peace or something.
It doesn't really matter. Art style/elf design on and on will be done by Bioware. We can buy or not buy, there is no try. (must prepare for ToR every chance I get)

While you're absolutely right about its up to Bioware and then up to us whether we buy, their whole aim is to please the buyers and make money.
I'm sure they appreciate these debates and exchanging of opinions as long as it is done in a civilised manner. It most likely helps them and gives them something to go on when they work on future games and to what the majority thought of previous things, I imagine its also nice to see what the fans thought of a product you worked ur ass on. (I'm not saying this is fact, its just my personal opinion so no need to start yelling NO NO YOU ARE SO WRONG)
I just feel sorry for them to the point that they cannot please everyone but thats life. They have me as a bioware addict and I love them even when I want to hate them at times lol
So my whole point was that it does matter and sorry if I got off topic to get there

Yep. All in the name of anime-ification. I wonder if they were consciously trying to bring in the JRPG/anime/manga crowd with this game?
