this may already have its own thread but i'm lazy.

I'd like to know how many people playing as femshep are in real life female

and  why do you play as femshep.

with all the buzz lately about femshep it just got me thinking that there may be alot more female gamers than i realized.

Okay, I'll bite.

Yes to both. I tried male but it didn't take (I enjoyed Mark Meer's VA btw so it wasn't that).

Well, various polls suggest that about 30-40% of all gamers are female... so take from that what you will.

Male

Playing as both genders, but my "canon" shep is male.
Playing females for replayability.

Edit: also, when playing females I have an easier time being a total jerkwad as disassociation is easier for me. I'm really sucky at playing "evil"

I'm female and play exclusively female characters in BW games. I keep telling myself I need to try out the males but I usually quit fairly early on. I just like being able to play a woman.

EDIT: Actually, I take that back. Now that I think of it, I did finish one single male PT. It was Jade Empire.

There are a lot.  But there are also alot of males.  This question is brought up alot in the femshep thread in the ME2 Character Forums.

Anyway quick version

Im male and I love her because she breaks the norm of females in gaming.  I love the fact that femshep manages to be a strong and formidable protagonist without being hypersexualized to absurd degrees.   Its ssuprisingly unique in gaming!   Plus im tired of the same old clone male action hero's I grown up with in games and movies.  She makes a refreshing change and her voice actor plays a big part too.

I'm having a hard time buying that.

Or maybe I'm just not a "young person" anymore.  Turn 30 this year and I ain't looking forward to it.  Very few female gamers, as far as I can tell, in my age group.  Dammit.

My mom is in her 50s and plays games. Okay, that's anecdotal, but I've still heard from quite a few female gamers in that age group.

Actually, what I find interesting about femshep is that she can be a soldier without having a chip on her shoulder about being a woman in "this man's army" or going around being a ball-buster just for kicks.  One of the nice side benefits of both Shepards being exactly the same with almost the same lines of dialogue.

Now that is hard to buy.  I'm trying to imagine my mom in her late 40s playing video games.....that just is not computing at all.

I've met female gamers from 15 to 65 during my gaming years (FPS to MMOs to here).  I'm 47 (OMG I'm old) so I fit in the middle there.  I wonder if that poll reflects so called 'casual' games - angry birds and the like?

Sorry OP I've dragged this off topic...ignore me.

I my self have a femshep run, but it always felt weird.

Im all for female gamers, i actually enjoy it when i find females that can hang with the boys in COD and NFS.

i just hadnt realized that the community of female gamers had grown so much.

my wife has tried to get into gaming but shes just so bad at it i kinda thought gamer girls where a myth.

It really depends on personality. My mom actually got me into games. And Star Wars, Star Trek, fantasy stories with dragons... She's always been a geek.

She plays Lord of the Rings Online with a lot of women her age, but it seems like more women play MMOs than single-player games.

I am Man in RL. The buzz about femsheps as I understood it, is about default version possibly becoming blonde and few people don´t like her looking like a barbie and they took this hard. But at this moment it is still only a concept and she might come out differently.
I have played both male and female sheps, for me playing femshep is just part of the fun playing great game, simple.

I'm a dude. I tried to play as a female Shepard, but I lost interest and never finished. Couldn't connect.

Plus the romance was just weird.... I tried to make her go for Kaiden, but it felt like she was the man and he was the woman....

Thank you.  It's nice to see that I'm not the only person who feels this way.  I probably take it a step further when I say I hate talking to the merc recruiter on Omega because female Shepard is made to respond to his comment by narrowing her eyes.  The renegade interrupt is beyond face-palm inducing for me and as such, don't use it.  It doesn't strike me as particularly strong to reply in the manner she did, but oh well.

I reason that reaction for my Shepard to be based on her having the colonist background and hating Batarians as a result.  All others I do my best to pretend I don't see it.  Obviously it's not working that well.

*EDIT*

As to why I play as female Shepard, it's been my experience that women can have a voice that many wouldn't expect regardless of their background.  So I can make a female Shepard of African descent who can have Jennifer Hale voicing her than a male Shepard of African descent having Mark Meer voicing him.

Totally  :)  The fact she and male Shepard are gender neutral means they are treated as equals from the offset!! Again its really unique to have such a situation.  What male Shep does we see time and time again in action hero media.  However we now have a female lead doing exactly what a male does with little variation.

Bioware probably never thought about this at all and just set out for a hero who can be played either gender.  But its created something amazing and makes Mass Effect stand out even more!

32 myself, female gamer since age 5 or so.... have 2 dear, close friends (female) - like sisters to me, both gamers... know about eight other people I consider 'pals' or whatever.. not close friends but fun to hang with on weekends ... 3 of them are hardcore gamers like myself... the others dabble in casual gaming here and there (mostly on iphone, etc).

Granted, it seems women are more likely than men to scoff at gaming (still see it as immature or childish.. which is ignorant... it's no more childish than watching movies or tv).. however I'd say close to half the other women I've met in my life (and brought gaming up with for one reason or another) admitted to at least having played video games in some capacity or another (be it casually or hardcore).

Difference is we don't talk about it openly quite as much as the boys do ;)  ...and we certainly don't broadcast it openly in multiplayer gaming (at least not often anyway).... though as someone who avoids online multiplayer entirely (reasonably thick skinned but it gets tiring hearing people call you variations of of the world relating to a prostitute or a part of the reproductive organs.. don't find it relaxing or enjoyable so I avoid multiplayer games usually) .. it's not relevant to me all that much.

So I'd personally agree with the average assessment that perhaps 30-35% of women play games (not so sure about the 40.. but I suppose it's possible).

We're growing though... born gamers like myself draw more in all the time :D

One reason may be that in multiplayer games there are also a lot of women who play male characters or go by names that aren't overtly feminine, due to harrassment. It's pretty appalling how some people will treat you if you've got a female avatar.

I'm female and play FemShep, she is a strong, brave and couragous woman who can do whatever she really wishes to most the time. She kicks ass and looks good doing it. Really, I always play female when given the choice, because it shows iconic women. In a way, you could say I admire characters like her. Then you also have the amazing voice actress who plays her, and the good romances given to her. However, I know many guys who play her as well. Actually, my fiance does, and some other good friends who are male, and they don't play her to stare at her ass and her fawking boobs (some of them are gay actually) but for the voice and for a kickass female soldier.

But really, alot of the women I know play her, female Revan, LadyHawke, females in Origins, etc. because of how she is. Most videogame women have big ass boobs, a good ass and are just...there. Not the protagonist, not a kickass soldier or anything. Then you look at her, you look at LadyHawke, at female Revan, hell Bungie did a nice female Noble 6. They all are women, they all kick ass and they all look smexy doing it. I mean, truly, they do. I tried doing male playthroughs, I really have. But it's not the same. I have managed one male in Origins, two in DA2, only one in ME (and only cuz I lost a bet), and that's really it. I can also relate to females better because I am one, I get how they feel because I understand more so.

I'm male. In ME1 I only played through 4 times and it was a 50/50 split, didn't like Meers VA in ME1, it really annoyed me. He got much better and it would be 80%+ males for ME2. Just feels more natural.
