female- FemSheps

I'm currently playing Dungeon Siege 3 and 4 achievements require that I play the game twice through with a male avatar. I'll do it but not really happy about it. Oh well.
I prefer being able to play as a female than a male.

Well simply because it changes the whole feel of the experience compared to maleshep.jayred vas normandy wrote...
and if your male why do you play as femshep.
I enjoy playing both equally. I guess it is easier to do this if you see yourself as separate from Shepard and merely controlling their actions.

One reason may be that in multiplayer games there are also a lot of women who play male characters or go by names that aren't overtly feminine, due to harrassment. It's pretty appalling how some people will treat you if you've got a female avatar.jayred vas normandy wrote...
my wife has tried to get into gaming but shes just so bad at it i kinda thought gamer girls where a myth.
Hah, funny you mention it... my own username here is a relic from my brief expeditions into a few multiplayer games a few years back (world of warcraft, Team fortress 2.. couple others I can't remember)... used a male gamer tag hoping to blend in.. worked until I decided to risk using a microphone for a bit to make communication easier / better within the game.... I was then believed to be a boy who's testicles hadn't dropped yet... then an effeminate male... but then people caught on I was female (I guess male names really throws men for a loop,
Anytime I do play a multiplayer game though (very rare these days) I always use a male-sounding tag.... and I don't touch a microphone anymore

To answer the question, I am female and love the opportunity of playing a strong female hero, for they are a rarity.

Well, various polls suggest that about 30-40% of all gamers are female... so take from that what you will.
I'm having a hard time buying that.
Or maybe I'm just not a "young person" anymore. Turn 30 this year and I ain't looking forward to it. Very few female gamers, as far as I can tell, in my age group. Dammit.
It all depends on the definition of "gamer". In the loosest definition, i.e. people who play a computer game of some kind, at least once a week, something like 48% of women under 40 said they did, last I heard. With men the figure wasn't all that much higher, something like 60%.
That's the loosest definition, though. When you're talking about particular games, the breakdown varies. With MMOs, you typically see more female players - a game like WoW might have as much as 30-40% of the players actually female (not just female characters), on some servers, even though some people will claim they've never met a female WoW player or similar craziness (the last guild I was in, in WoW, was about 60% female, and have around 50 members who played actively - but think - for every guild like that, there's likely to be another with more like 1% or 0% female members - probably because the people in it are horrible horny teenage or 20-something dudebros). Whereas with a game like Battlefield or Modern Warfare, it's more like 5-10%, and they have to keep their mouths shut or a thousand horny teen/20s guys will start sexually harassing them, so it seems even smaller.
With BioWare games, I don't know, though I'll bet it's higher with the DA series than with the ME series. It's bizarre - all the male gamers I know, their wife or long-term GF isn't much of a gamer, maybe doesn't even like fantasy novels/movies, but you can bet money, she's played and finished DA:O! What it is about that game? I don't know.
As for the OP's question, I'm male and I play both - I like FemShep better for Jennifer Hale's performance, and because I totally love tough chicks in sci-fi (Lt. Ripley being the greatest), but all Shepards are fun.

Now that is hard to buy. I'm trying to imagine my mom in her late 40s playing video games.....that just is not computing at all.
I'm 49, female and play computer games. My best friend is 56, female and plays computer games. We're out there. We just avoid these forums. I'm only on this forum because I'm playing DA2 again and just popped over here.

My 'main' Shepard is female, but I've played both genders repeatedly.

I can relate to the MMO thing. I remember I would have random people come up to me and try and gift gold to me. One time I got PMed by a guy asking if I needed help, as he enjoyed helping females. Although I can appreciate the gesture, frankly it was very insulting. I stopped MMOs after that.
That's part of the reason I steer away from Battlefield online. I've played through the campaign and I've heard so many good things about it, but it's hard to play a team-based online game without a mic, and I don't enjoy either being harrased or waited on.

when I played WoW for a year religiously, I learned most women prefer playing female toons, whereas men tend to be split.
An observer with gender insecurity may suggest that guys playing female characters want to be women, or women playing female characters may be gay, but if observed by someone truly objective, it should be noted that most species are by default female and an affinity for the female form is built in to all members of those species.

That's nothing. When I was fourteen, some guy on (MMO)* asked me if I was really a guy. I said no. His very next question was what kind of underwear I was wearing.StrawberryViking wrote...
I play exclusively female in games that allow it. I tried running a Sheploo but the disconnect was too much for me.

I've had it pretty easy in comparison to some stories I've heard, though. Now if somebody is getting too friendly with me I just tell them I'm a guy and work in a few 'dude's and 'man's and they stop hassling me. My mom went the other route and plays primarily male characters and lets people assume from that. I've heard that's somewhat typical (no, women don't primarily play female avatars, above poster), but I could never give up my pretty female avatars.
EDIT: *I thought it was Guild Wars, but I guess it couldn't have been since I was around 17 when it came out. I played a few MMOs over the years, they start to run together.

okay a serious answer, because I ahv ething for powerful female and when I saw femshep was on the same tier as Maleshep I thought it was outstanding. seeing that a female could punch a Krogan right in the jaw and didn't do the "I broke a nail!" type responses was great. It was nice seeing these uber masculine male characters take orders from a woman and not second guess her and be impressed with her and other female characters (Aliens complimenting Ashley on being a frontline soldier and such) Strong women are my weakness

I play Femsheps practically exclusively except I am playing a male shep to romance Jack because I love her character and her talk time is severely gimped with femshep.
I always play a female when given the option and I really hate being forced to play as a male. I hate to call myself a gamer because I play on casual and normal because I do not like the frustration of sucking so bad I always die. I will admit it I like to be an overpowered badass and playing on casual makes you feel like that. Beating it on a harder level only annoys me that I die so easily and have to replay some areas repeatedly. There's no extra story and for me that's the payout.
But I usually only play a male if there is a romance option I want to try with a male and its very hard to keep my interest. I still have my Male CE in DAO stuck in Orzammar. I played him to romance Morrigan and play a s/s with Zevran

I've tried with MaleShep, but I just couldn't get into it. In part because his voice acting is so horribly flat, as opposed to Jennifer Hale. I always tell myself to play through the game as a male character at least once, but I never get that far. FemShep has always been one of my favorite female protagonists ever since ME1.
Also, I love playing as a female in BioWare's games because they're always much more than just pretty ornaments. Hawke, Shepard, the Warden, Revan, the Exile, etc are all ass-kicking women who still have room for some femininity(excluding Shepard, that is.)

I could play as a male shep but I don't get into it as much.
My brother calls me for it, but I prefer games where I can at least play as my gender.

I enjoy FemShep for many of the reasons everyone else here has listed, so I don't need to really repeat myself too much, I can just sum it up. She isnt overly sexualized, shes tough, shes not a ball-buster and all "oh my god, I am a woman in a mans field, its been so hard to get where I am!" or "I can be better than any man! Men are scum!" (I like that it isnt ever brought up or pointed out, I really hate when female characters bring up that kind of attitude, its just akward...) Shes just an all around strong female character and hero.
