37 year old female gamer here, been gaming as a serious hobby for about 12 years now. I always plays a female character when the option is available, because in rpgs I really value the immersion - and I just can't get immersive playing a guy :). Over and above that though, I LOVE female Shepard - what an amazing character Bioware has created and Jennifer Hale has voiced; I feel more at home "in" her than any game character to date.

I am a member of a very large multi-game MMO guild, adults only (over 25), and there are A LOT of women members - at least 25% of the guild, very possibly more.

Small anecdote - I wore my N7 t-shirt to the grocery store the other day, and this attractive, mid-30s woman just went nuts over it; I never expected to find another female ME fan while grocery shopping :).

I am male and I play mostly males.  Some female shepard.

I really want to play the black femshep n°4. If bioware allows me to have this preset, she will become my canon shepard. What would be the first time.

I'm female, and play Femshep. But I have no problem playing male characters too. Female is usually my default- but sometimes I'll pick a male for fantasy games. [I think I just like guys in armor, and females in fantasy games often get saddled with the chainmail bikinis.]

I haven't gotten around to playing a male Shepard yet, for the same reason I haven't played renegade. I got really attached to a particular canon, and I've yet to deviate. I also have two brothers, so I pretty much get to hear snippets of the game as manshep enough to not feel the need to play it. But I don't dislike or feel hostility towards ManShepard. I always wish there would have been some way for both male and female Shepard to canonically exist in the same universe. Like have one be the sibling you occasionally run into. But maybe that's just me.

Male, femshep. Partly because I'm a Hale fan, partly because I generally find male protagonists are too stereotyped for me to relate to them.

Im male and I love her because she breaks the norm of females in gaming.  I love the fact that femshep manages to be a strong and formidable protagonist without being hypersexualized to absurd degrees.   Its ssuprisingly unique in gaming!

Basically, this. There's very few games i can think of with similar level of gender-blindness and the rarity of this approach makes it no-brainer to pick the female Shepard over the male who is, well, pretty much like every other male lead in a computer game ever.

40 year old Male here so far I have about 18 femshep play throughs and 2 male shep play throughs.  I prefer femshep pretty much for the same reasons others have stated.  Firstly I love Jennifer Hales work she is a fantastic VO and it is a pleasure to listen to her delivering femsheps lines (nothing wrong with Mark but I just don't enjoy his work as much).

Secondly I dunno maybe because I have been gaming for nearly 29 years I have got a bit tired of playing Male Space Marine #6789 with a head full of stubble saving the universe.  It makes a nice change to be able to play a strong female character and brings a whole slew of interesting interactions into the game that you don't get with the male "dude".  I also like the idea it is a woman saving the galaxy for once.

Thirdly I will admit there is an appearance thing, I sure as hell do not design my femsheps to look like Nanny McPhee.  It is certanly easier to make an attractive woman with the Character creator than it is a man (that could be because I am a guy).

Female, 48 I play as females as well whenever I can. Most of my playthroughs are femshep though I did do a couple of maleshep runs. It was hard to get into character though for me. I like to try the other romances to see how they turn out. I guess I'm a romantic. :o)

I appreciate even the simple things like the facial textures, with a hint of rings under the eyes and crows feet on the brows (in ME1 at least.  ME2 seemed to wash the textures out with filtering so you can't see it as well anymore).  This is not a typical Space Babe, but someone that could reasonably resemble a real marine.

I'm female. Mostly, I play FemShep, but right now, I'm playing a renegade male. :) I'd say I like both, but I do prefer Femshep. It's really weird--in Bioware games, I always play female first, but I have no problem with males in subsequent playthroughs. In The Witcher, I have no problem with playing Geralt. But when I tried out Fable, I quit playing after a while because the male protagonist made me completely detached from the game. I guess it must've been because it was a pretty generic pc and I couldn't understand why they didn't make it an option to play as a female... oh well.

Anyway, I have three Femsheps in ME2, and now I'm playing through ME1 with two more plus the MShep to import later. Preparing for ME3 has never been more fun. :D

I'm female, age 36. I play female characters when possible. I don't have any particular burning reason why, I just prefer it that way.

I'm female and I typically play female characters (my main Warden in DA:O was female, my KotOR II Exile was female), though I'm not averse to playing male characters. I'm to be in my last year of high school come September and I've been a gamer for as long as I could play games.

I've ran through ME1 and ME2 a few times, played both genders and explored different possibilities.

But yeah, I mostly play as female, as well. I enjoy Femshep more than Maleshep anyhow.

e: Elaborating the above: I love Jennifer Hale. She's one of my favorite voiceover artists. That's probably why I like Femshep more.

Wow, I'm stunned at all the older gamers here. Not that it's a bad thing, but you always hear this crap about how once you hit a certain age you shouldn't play games anymore, which is just ridiculous.

Nice to see it.

I've been gaming since the 70's.  Yes I am that old.:P

I'm a female, but Mass Effect is the first game ever that I used a female character.  I almost always use a male character, if given a choice.  Some games don't give you one.

I tried using Sheploo on my first time playing,  It was a rental and I didn't enjoy playing with Meers boring acting.  Yes, Meer made me not care about maleShep.  I ended up returning the game without getting through Eden Prime.  Several months later, I was at Gamestop just looking around.  I noticed ME was under $20, so I decided to try it again. This time with femShep.  I fell in love with the game quickly.

Now, I have forced myself to play maleShep to see all the romances.  I play more femShep than anything and my canon femShep the most.  Five playthroughs on ME and eleven on ME2.

Still to this day, I usually play a male character over a female one.  I did it with both Fable II and III.  Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Because BioWare does such a great job with female leads, I've played more femHawke than male even though both VA did a good job.  Wish I could say that with ME.

this may already have its own thread but i'm lazy.

I'd like to know how many people playing as femshep are in real life female

and if your male why do you play as femshep.

with all the buzz lately about femshep it just got me thinking that there may be alot more female gamers than i realized.

You forgot to ask the females why we play as MShep.

I know two women gamers in real life.  One of them is me.  The other is my best friend, but she's not quite as serious as me.

Grandma here. You don't get the age out of me. We don't sit around playing solitaire anymore. I worked in IT. I programmed in C++. I helped debug a number of games. I just can't tell you which ones.

I play almost exclusively female characters. I have difficulty playing as a male character because there is too much disconnect. I have one male Shepard and he was a paragade. My female Shepards have ranged from paragon to renegade. It wasn't the voice acting at the heart of my reason either. I've only got one playthough as a male in DAO as well because I wanted the achievement for romancing Morrigan.

37 and counting.  The last time I bought a game at GameStop the tween-looking clerk actually had the nerve to ask "Is this for you?"

I enjoy seeing everything possible in a game and experiencing as much of it as possible. That's why I have some FemSheps. Both with Liara and Kaidan romances. I'm a heterosexual male but it's a video game world. It's not like you actually live that life, and a little fun never hurt anyone.

So yeah, my reasoning is the variety. It's just more fun when you're playing different characters with different morals and ways of thinking with different romances and the like.

Edit: Sorry to hear that, Captain_Obvious. That's pretty stupid, but from a tween looking Gamestop employee, I'm really not all that surprised... lol

In addition to being female and a [largely computer] gamer myself, my stepmom is also an avid computer gamer. And my dad's all right with older consoles (the first game I beat all the way through was Donkey Kong Country on SNES; my dad and I did coop and we rocked it).

I have never gotten that from GameStop employee once.  Maybe I don't look my age, but I am going grey, so maybe I will get that in the future.

BTW I am in my mid-40's.

I'm male and I play FemShep sometimes because I like the variety.

Simple as that.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I wanna experience what the game has to offer.

I tend relate to humans as humans beings rather than by gender, so it's equally easy to inject myself into manshep and femshep.

Also, as mentioned earlier in the thread, I like that femshep isn't hyper-sexualized like most video game women. I hope she makes it through ME3 this way since Bioware is as bad at objectifying women as the rest of the indusry these days (though I do want to see and am curious about how she will be sexually harrased in ME3; ME1-Harkin, ME2-Baratian, ME3-?).

FemShep didn't even smile or anything with the baratian either.  Which was great.

Shutting Harkin down with a Renegade Femshep was one of my favourite moments from a Femshep in all of Mass Effect in general. Just brilliant that was.

Indeed. I wish she could have referenced it when she found him in ME2.

And the interrupt with the batarian in ME2 is priceless.

"Show me yours, I'll bet mine is bigger."

Gotta love that woman.

I always play both sexes in RPGs, but I tend to make female characters first, because I enjoy personalising their appearance more than I do for guys.

I'm female, and I usually play both genders fairly evenly. I'm always drawn to games with customisation, and those were the female charaters aren't the standard game women tend to get bonus points.

There aren't too many that get bonus points.
