Sure. I'm female. I always play females when it's an available option. My immersion improves when I can identify more with the protagonist, and I enjoy romances more when I don't have to romance a woman. I have tried to play Sheploo a few times, but I always end up restarting the game as a female.

Well, various polls suggest that about 30-40% of all gamers are female... so take from that what you will.

I'm having a hard time buying that.

Or maybe I'm just not a "young person" anymore.  Turn 30 this year and I ain't looking forward to it.  Very few female gamers, as far as I can tell, in my age group.  Dammit.

I'm also turning 30 this year. I agree I do not know many female gamers in my age group, but tbh most females I know in my age have no particular hobbies, and spend most of their time taking care of their kids (or shopping, partying and watching poor telly shows if they don't have families yet). I think there are plenty of female gamers in their 30s out there, but probably not anywhere near the amount of male gamers in the same age.

I'm female, I play as a Female Shepard roughly 90% of the time, partially because the LI's for male Shepard all bore me (Except Tali).

Because depending on how you define gamers, we are.

If you encompass gamer to include anyone who plays Bejeweled on their phone, then we're a good size of the population. If you whittle away phone/iTouch games, the number begins to shrink. If you (and many do) also disclude the number of people who game exclusively on facebook/the occasional flash game, then the number of female  players goes down a lot.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I grew up in vg arcades and I could go weeks and never see another female in the room with me, and as I migrated to consoles, the trend continued. The only 'place' I've gamed where I consistently see other female players (assuming the majority aren't men who are lying) are huge MMOs like World of Warcraft. Gears of War, left4dead, and asking my brothers who play Halo, etc- I rarely ever ran into other girl gamers. I'm not saying my/our experience is indicative of the total trend, but a lot of my gamer friends generally don't interact with women online unless we're playing with IRL friends.

I'm male and play as default sheploo because quite frankly I suck at customizing.

Being a former MMO player, I long ago became desensitized by the fact that a moderate chunk of the percentage of gamers are women. In the early days of MMOGs, female toons that were played by women in real life were treated like queens when they joined guilds and were givin so much loot, all of this because people never really encountered a girl in game so they wanted to impress them somehow.

Right now I'm in a relationship with someone that doesn't have much love for gaming. Sure she has played on occasion left 4 dead and black ops but she doesn't see it as a hobby exactly. It's like we come home from a scorching hot summer's day at the gym (really, staying inside is the only way to beat the heat; not beach weather at all) and I decide to flip on the Xbox for short bit but she just rolls her eyes. Once she tried to get into it while watching me play and she just fell asleep. yes I give her the attention she needs, but it's more the fact that she's one of those who believe games are for geeks and the immature.

I one day debated with her saying that games in itself are an art, and they should be appreciated as an art, plus some of the games have a novel-like quality to them makes you feel like you are reading a good book.
She responded by saying that the industry is simply meant for children no matter how you look at it. It's one of those things that we don't share common interests on, so she regularly puts me down for playing them. For years I remained a closet gamer up until recently when she wanted to move in.

In my previous years of dating, oh what would I GIVE to have met a girl like one of you here who actually LIKES rpgs and games such as mass effect. I've met women who play games regularly but they are few and far between and are already married with children (at a young age!).

I apologize if I rambled there. ANYWAY...... *walks off awkwardly*

Dude, show her the stats regarding age and gender as pertains to gamers that I posted earlier if the debate should come up again:
http://www.theesa.com/facts/index.asp

If she still thinks games are for kids, then I'll let you make your own assessment about someone who still sticks to their own prejudicial assumptions in the face of contrarian facts.

Yeah, I have a hard time picturing females being even 10% of the "serious gamer" crowd myself.

Eh, I'd say we are- we're just probably not more than 10% of the competitive multiplayer crowd. I occasionally go online, but not nearly as much as I used to. After the thirtieth time of 'go to the kitchen and make me a sandwich', it began to lose its lustre and I decided that maybe single player was where it was at.

Not saying that every man I ever played against online was a douche rocket, I met some very nice ones, but after a certain point, you get tired of 'girls shouldn't game' or getting kicked off of a team just because you're a female.

Guy here but I play as both but for me it depends on the class I play. My soldier and infiltrator and male and my adept is female. It's pretty much the same when I play DA 1 and 2 where my warrior and rogue are male and my mage is female.

i tried femshep, didnt like it. hales VA trys too hard and line for line sounds like a completely different person going from normal voice to angry back to normal back to angry, its awkward as hell.

plus the bigger thing for me is i cant really get immersed into the story and character if its a different gender, nothing against females being badass, i just like stepping into the shoes of my character and i cant really do that playing femshep.

about the 40% of gamers are female, a vast majority of that statistic only play facebook games and other super casual stuff, they'd never touch stuff like mass effect. that makes girls who like real games even more of a catch :P

23 year old female who plays female Shepard. I just feel more immersed in a game if I can play a woman.
I wouldn't say i'm a "hardcore" player but gaming is a very big interest to me, even my boyfriend who is just as bad calls me a nerd (always telling him all the updates for ME etc, he is not a forum person)!

Sadly all of my online names are "ladylike" so I get harassed pretty quickly so I don't play online unless I'm with friends. I know a lot of female gamers my age from work/uni. We are growing. I just stick to RGP's now.

I had one brief relationship where the guy literally came round for 2 mintues I was playing Super Mario, said I'd save asap and he got annoyed for me playing 5minutes of a game. That boyfriend was gone quicker than I could say, sadly he did the dumping haha.

My BSN username is also my xbox name, so that might have been part of it, but a lot of the time, it wasn't until I was talking on the headset that the crap started. It also led to some amusement; for a long time I had the only xbox and gold account so my little brother would use it to Halo. Guys would start being all 'oh you're a chick? show me your ******' when they saw the gamertag and he would respond in the deepest voice possible.

Regardless of the feminity of my gamertag, though, the fact remains: if I'm making someone a sandwich they better check to make sure I didn't slip some poison between the slices, and if I have to hear a request to show my boobs to prove they're real again, I'm going to find a way to punch people through xbox live. And that goes for anyone else, really.

Female, soon 30. I always play as female when the option exists. What can I say, I like mini-me's.

As many have pointed out, female gamers are elusive creatures oftentimes because of the abuse they get if they "come out". Consult fatuglyor****ty.com if you don't believe.

I'm 26, always prefer to play my own gender and have no problem at all letting people know I'm a woman. If someone bugs me, I don't respond, I just block them. That's what it's there for. And generally, if someone has an issue with me, it has nothing to do with me being a woman anyway. lmao

Female gamer here =)

My brother and I grew up playing Baldurs Gate together. After that it was a looong break until hubby one day bought DA:O. Had no idea that you could play as a female at first, but as soon as I saw that I made my first female warden and have been a devout bioware fan ever since. Quite a few FemSheps and FemHawkes. Tried to play a male char but I just don't connect with them. Did WoW for a few years, two RL-friends are officers in a nice guild for people over 25. Lots and lots of female gamers in that one. It took some time to leave WoW, not because I was overly fond of the game but because it was such a nice group of people. Just prefer single-player-games =) My best girl-friends(as in a friend who is female) from college is a devout ME-fan and plays alot. Another friend only plays WoW. Tried to hook her on ME but it hasn't worked so far. There are female gamers around, more and more every year me thinks =)

I'm a 31 year old female gamer and I play femshep exclusively. Been gaming since I was in my early teens (would have started earlier if we'd had a computer or console before then). I tend to play single player games rather than online ones and I play as a female character when given the choice. I don't find I have any connection to male leads so I've given up playing them and really only buy games where I have the choice to play as a female anyway.

As for femshep like others have said I really like her vo and find her interesting, immersive and engaging which makes the me series one of my most replayed ever.

I'd like to know how many people playing as femshep are in real life female

and  why do you play as femshep.

with all the buzz lately about femshep it just got me thinking that there may be alot more female gamers than i realized.

I am male in RL. And I usually play female protagonists because....well.....I tend to project myself into fictional worlds as a woman. I don't know why. A psychologist may have something to say about it. It's not about looking at a nice body on-screen, because I also do it in tabletop RPGs.

Since ME2, I'm playing the same number of maleSheps as I do femSheps. But that's because of Miranda.

@leldra2: (using phone so I can't quote)

I do that too. I do prefer looking at a woman on-screen, but there's more to it than that
as well. I've also played D&D once and my character was female as well.

I was also going to mention Freud would say a certain something about it. Personally, I just think the guy was crazy, I've studied psychology and Freud, but I also think there may be a little bit of truth in what he was saying. I just wouldn't apply it to all people.

Oh, right, female gamers: my mom plays games and she's better at them than I am. She's also nearing her 50's. Also, she got me into video games as well. Who knows if I would have had my parents not owned Gameboys back when they used 4x AA batteries.

As for myself: I like how Female Shepard his strong and doesn't take anything from anyone. Also that she's not portrayed as some dainty thing that seems awkward in dangeroys situations, the thought about Lara Croft has crossed my mind before.

If they are going to with the most popular, I am disappointed it had to be one of the blonde ones. I never understood the appeal.

I disagree because most of the chicks I know playing are either on Wii, Facebook (I don't like flash or java games) or MMOs. shooters with a small RPG'esque theme like Mass Effect, or shooters in general are less popular. mind that I'm talking about the people I know and they are quite a lot. so it doesn't matter if 30-40% are into gaming when they usually play on different platforms and different games.

I'm female. I love FemShep because she reminds me me. I mean we have similar characters. Also if there is a choice I always play as female. And Mass Effect is not an exception.
