I'm a woman who plays games. When I play games I like playing as a woman. Simple.

I've been a gamer ever since my uncle introduced me to the adventures of Guybrush Threepwood on Monkey Island when I was little.

These days I can actually find myself put off by games - RPGs in particular - which don't give me the option to play as my own sex. When I do have the option I never play as a guy. I've tried doing so in BioWare titles, but I didn't like it.

Well, various polls suggest that about 30-40% of all gamers are female... so take from that what you will.

I disagree because most of the chicks I know playing are either on Wii, Facebook (I don't like flash or java games) or MMOs. shooters with a small RPG'esque theme like Mass Effect, or shooters in general are less popular. mind that I'm talking about the people I know and they are quite a lot. so it doesn't matter if 30-40% are into gaming when they usually play on different platforms and different games.

Just because the women you know play games you don't enjoy / play doesn't mean they're not gamers.

By your logic I could say that CoD & Halo players aren't really gamers... for the simple fact I don't play or like first person shooters.

If someone is playing facebook games, Wii games, Iphone games, whatever.. it's irrelevant.. if they play them frequently, they're gamers like you & me... they just play different games.

I'm a female person and about 95% of the time I play with a female character.

I finished ME1 and 2 only once with a male character, didn't like it.

I'm a lady and I play as Lady Shepard because Man Shepard's voice makes me want to throw my TV out the window. Plus, I get an awesome super-awkward romance with Garrus if I play as a lady :D

I'm female and I always play female when given the option. Especially in BioWare games.

Then again, most of my rl gamer male friends all play as FemShep. Their reasoning is 'If im going to stare at a butt for 40 hours, it better be a nice one'.

@Sabariel - Same! I tried to play him and it just annoyed me so much ;x

3 DudeSheps and 1 FemShep. I just can't stand Hale in this one. Her "forced marine" voice grates on my nerves greatly.

Why do people always assume female gamers are in short supply? ._.

I'm female, I play as a Female Shepard roughly 90% of the time, partially because the LI's for male Shepard all bore me (Except Tali).

Because depending on how you define gamers, we are.

If you encompass gamer to include anyone who plays Bejeweled on their phone, then we're a good size of the population. If you whittle away phone/iTouch games, the number begins to shrink. If you (and many do) also disclude the number of people who game exclusively on facebook/the occasional flash game, then the number of female  players goes down a lot.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I grew up in vg arcades and I could go weeks and never see another female in the room with me, and as I migrated to consoles, the trend continued. The only 'place' I've gamed where I consistently see other female players (assuming the majority aren't men who are lying) are huge MMOs like World of Warcraft. Gears of War, left4dead, and asking my brothers who play Halo, etc- I rarely ever ran into other girl gamers. I'm not saying my/our experience is indicative of the total trend, but a lot of my gamer friends generally don't interact with women online unless we're playing with IRL friends.

That's just silly, I'm a very serious gamer! *Goes back to playing Cooking Mama*

Female.

fem Shepard was the first female Character I actually enjoyed playing. In KOTOR 1+2, DAO, DA2, Oblivion, BG2, Vampires the Masquarade and some other I have chosen the male character. It was either because I liked to look at a male butt or because the female dialoge options freaked me out.

Shepard is fun. :)

I am female, I currently have 8 Sheps on the go (4 female paragon and 4 male renegade - just because I think JH voices a better paragon and MM does a better renegade).

Guess I have a very slight preference for being female but i dont think it has anything to do with my gender and more to do with the fact that I have a weakness for kick-ass women - come on buffy and xena - you cant beat them :-)

I have gamed since the 80's on my atari and commidor, i guess I would concider myself a serious gamer but really it depends on how you define 'serious', RPG, FPS, SPS, action, adventure, point and click, beat em ups, - i play basically anything except sports games - well there was a minor incident with PGA '10 but I my husband staged an interention and im fine now!!

Female and will aways pick to play the Female in all games, even if they dont get very good stats or anything like that. I just can't really connect with male characters because i dont really know how a male thinks. I know how i would do something and 9 times out of 10 other women will think the same way.

I did try playing as male shep but i just hated every moment of it and gave up after playing an hour, i did try to go back to it a few time but the spark i get from playing just wasn't there.

Female, 25. Usually, if I play a game several times, I try both female and male protagonists (though my first and 'canon' chars tend to be female). In ME, however, I'm too much in love with FemShep to switch. The character simply struck a chord with me, like the best fictional characters can.

If it's any consolation, dude, I'm a female gamer who would appreciate having a bf who actually was a real gamer, and not some jerkwad who cries cheetos and angst if he gets beaten by a girl or gets huffy if you don't want to play the same games as them. :innocent:

Sadly that "jerkwad" wouldn't know how lucky he is to have a girl who generally shows deep interest in games.
I've dated a girl in the past who was semi into games and whenever I killed her in Halo 2 she would attempt to pistol whip me with the controller Image IPB

It depends very much on the game and story setting, the overall feel of it along with the character of the protaganist. I tend to start off with a female toon first, even for online FPS like Unreal Tournament but will make guy toons later. For ME, I never could gel with the default male Shep. The Shep char is very attractive for a female Shep so personally, she has become the face of ME. Image IPB

I'd like to know how many people playing as femshep are in real life female

*raises hand*

jayred vas normandy wrote...

and  why do you play as femshep.

Because I don't identify with male characters well. I've missed many good games, because of that, I preferred to look at my hun playing them.
I don't mind "light" games like Just Cause or Bulletstorm (actually I adore Grayson a lot), but in RPG's I prefer playing with a character of my own gender.

I'm female and I play femshep.  However, I usually play most Bioware games as both genders and in some of their games I actually prefer male.  Some I prefer female, and some are about 50/50.  Which I prefer is largely dependent upon how responsive the game actually is to gender and how much I like that responsiveness.  For instance, I can't stand the LI for female characters in BG2 so I always play as a male in that.  In games with no specific responsiveness to gender, I generally default to male in fantasy games and female in sci-fi/shooter type games so I play a chick in Fallout and Reach and a dude in Oblivion and Fable and so on.  I really have no idea why this is the case.   I have noticed that as I get older I tend to default on female characters more and more.

my wife has tried to get into gaming but shes just so bad at it i kinda thought gamer girls where a myth.

One reason may be that in multiplayer games there are also a lot of women who play male characters or go by names that aren't overtly feminine, due to harrassment. It's pretty appalling how some people will treat you if you've got a female avatar.

Internet anonymity at its worst.  People think they can say whatever they want when they're physically separated from their target by a thousand miles.  People are more polite in person because they instinctively know their flesh might have to cash the checks their mouths write.

It happens as much to men as women; the insults in both directions are almost always sexual in nature.  It just seems worse because there are fewer female gamers to begin with and I think most people are culturally more offended by someone offering an insult to a woman than doing the same to a man.

I'm having a hard time buying that.

Or maybe I'm just not a "young person" anymore.  Turn 30 this year and I ain't looking forward to it.  Very few female gamers, as far as I can tell, in my age group.  Dammit.

These statistics generally are counting the women who play stuff like Farmville and assorted Facebook games.  As for women who spend a large portion of time playing console and/or "hardcore" PC games, you are right in that we are a substantial minority.  The largest bracket of female hardcore gamers in my experience are MMORPG players.  I know lots of women who play WoW and things like that.  I know no women in real life who play lots of singleplayer RPGs, shooters, or action games.

not only dose it blow my mind that there are so many female gamers here, but the number of you that are so near my age. I'm 28 and i never imagined that id get this much fedback from women of my age group.

on the topic of what is a gamer- my thoughts are that if you care enough about a game to seek out others with the same passion, your without a doubt a Gamer.

Ragabul, there is a ...um....shortage....of women who play single player RPG's, FPS's etc - what gets me about being one myself is that whenever I go in to a game shop and look at games some spotty little shop assistant always comes up and asks if I am getting it as a gift, or if my husband (who isnt a gamer) is with me they talk to him (like I couldnt possibly know what I am talking about), thankfully I have no problem telling them how it is but still I shouldnt have too!
