When there's an option to, I mainly play female characters. I think I'm on my 5th femShep now...The only time I played a male was in DA:O and that was to get the Witch gone wild trophy. :P I've tried to play the rest of the game but I couldn't really connect with the character, so I didn't. (also didn't help that I made him a total jerk.) I think that's why I don't play male characters if I don't have to. With games like ME and DA I want to relate somewhat to the person I'm playing otherwise the decisions that I make won't really mean anything to me...I dunno maybe I'm just weird.
But it's funny. I have a guy friend who mainly plays femSheps cause he doesn't feel like watching a dude walking around for 30 hours.

Ragabul, there is a ...um....shortage....of women who play single player RPG's, FPS's etc - what gets me about being one myself is that whenever I go in to a game shop and look at games some spotty little shop assistant always comes up and asks if I am getting it as a gift, or if my husband (who isnt a gamer) is with me they talk to him (like I couldnt possibly know what I am talking about), thankfully I have no problem telling them how it is but still I shouldnt have too!

I get this a lot.  I also tend to get a lot of blank stares from the 17 year olds who work there if I mention a game that is more than about five years old.

There are a lot.  But there are also alot of males.  This question is brought up alot in the femshep thread in the ME2 Character Forums.

Anyway quick version

Im male and I love her because she breaks the norm of females in gaming.  I love the fact that femshep manages to be a strong and formidable protagonist without being hypersexualized to absurd degrees.   Its ssuprisingly unique in gaming!   Plus im tired of the same old clone male action hero's I grown up with in games and movies.  She makes a refreshing change and her voice actor plays a big part too.

The same here. I played as a male Shepard 3 times in both games after the third playthrough I knew I done with male Shepard.

Well, various polls suggest that about 30-40% of all gamers are female... so take from that what you will.

I'm having a hard time buying that.

Or maybe I'm just not a "young person" anymore.  Turn 30 this year and I ain't looking forward to it.  Very few female gamers, as far as I can tell, in my age group.  Dammit.

These statistics generally are counting the women who play stuff like Farmville and assorted Facebook games.  As for women who spend a large portion of time playing console and/or "hardcore" PC games, you are right in that we are a substantial minority.  The largest bracket of female hardcore gamers in my experience are MMORPG players.  I know lots of women who play WoW and things like that.  I know no women in real life who play lots of singleplayer RPGs, shooters, or action games.

I imagine you can put both turn based strategy and real time strategy in the group of games women tend to not play.

Female, 23. If there's an option, I tend to play female characters. But have no problem playing other games (such as Dead space, Fallout, Red dead, Deus ex etc.) where lead protagonist is in all cases, or most, male character. The reason why I, if given tend to pick and play female characters, is not much different then what was already said by many before me. In my case the main reason would be quite simple: it's easier to connect to the character. Usually when I play other games, where an option to chose the gender of the protagonist is not given, I feel much more related to the story then the character I'm playing. As much as wholeheartedly welcome the option to play female protagonist ( there are much to few and it doesn't help me but to wonder why in some games that are already established, a female protagonist cannot be or wasn't an option, it is at least something worth considering by the contemporary developers ), I personally enjoy all types of games, playing either male or female lead, as long as the story is interesting, immersive and well written.

Female, 19.

I think it's because a lot of my first games forced me to play as a male. Dart in Legend of Dragoon, Cloud in FF7 (yech), Spyro... So when given the option I like to play as my own gender. I usually do play as a male at some point though. It puts me off if I'm forced to do it, that's all.

It also depends on the game and the hype around certain characters. I hate playing female mage Hawke in DA2 because of her common role in fanfics for example, but I love playing as a male Dunmer in Oblivion, or a female Imperial.

There's something to be said about self-substitution as well, that in playing a female I can put myself as the 'she' who saves the world. It's escapism really.

In regards to female gamers.

I have no doubt that a large number of people who play games are female (I would say I know more females that play games than males). This includes games ranging from Mass Effect to Rock Band and all of the way down to games like Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, and Farmville.

That said, I know more male "gamers" or people who can be defined by the hobby of games. I think that a lot of guys are more likely to wear gaming as a badge of honor, comment on forums, etc... Obviously, that is never 100% the case (there is a very nice mix of male and female gamers when it comes to Bioware games).

As for the sake of the topic, I am a male, 23 who plays an even split of M/F Sheps. (same goes for pretty much any Bioware Game)

Agreed - I am proud to be one of the exceptions, I wouldnt say my nerd-dom defines me but my love of comic, games and sci-fi certainly has had a visable impact on my personality and house (you cant enter a room without being struck by something either gaming related, scifi, fantasy or graphic novel related)! Thankfully I have a hubby who although isnt as in to it all as I am is very tolerant - even when i put our first born son in a batman babygrow lol!!

I think that one of the things bioware does very well is mass appeal - not just to male and female but also to people who hadnt concidered RPG's or sci-fi games before. I know people who only tend to play FPS's but in amoungst all the COD I will always find a copy of mass effect, ME2 and DAO

You can be female in Fallout, though. I'm pretty sure you can be female in every Fallout game, actually. I've played every Fallout game except BoS, though (mostly because I hear it's bad), so I don't know if you can in BoS.

Male, 29. I exclusively play FemShep in Mass Effect. It's not just because I find Meer's portrayal of ManShep to be unappealing, but because just about every male video game protagonist seems to be fitting the same archetype, and I'm tired of it. Maybe it's just 'cause I'm getting older, but crap like this just makes my eyes roll back into my head.

I like strong female protagonists when they stand on their own without being oversexualized, where they're not just the "smaller, faster, more agile" option, and I got that with Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and a handful of other games.

I'm a 17 year old female. I always always always play as man Shep. I tried fem Shep once, but couldn't stand the way she spoke. It annoys me haha. That and I prefer the female LIs by a lot. OH and default man Shep is nice to look at. I find it to be impossible to make a pretty fem Shep. Every single time I tried they had duck bills for lips and big block heads. And the hairstyles all look greasy and are too short haha.

I'm 25. I play a lot of single player RPG's because of the awesomness of things like Grandia, Breath of Fire 3, Azure Dreams, Final Fantasy 7, Ephemeral Fantasia etc...  those were the games I grew up with so they had a big impact on what I enjoy now. I play some shooters like CoD but i'm not really a big fan of them. I play Fifa 11 because I do quite enjoy football but that's as far as i'll go with sports.

That's why I like BioWare games. They mix the RPG elements I love with fantastic characters and even better storytelling. Giving us the option to play female characters who are just as epic, sometimes moreso, as their male versions....how can anyone not love them ;)

What someone said earlier about employees at gaming stores assuming females know nothing. I used to get that. So now whenever I go in I wear my N7 hoody and now its simply 'Want to preorder Mass Effect 3? :D:D'

Male here, mostly play Shepard as a male. Tried playing as a female character a couple of times, but I admit my suspension of disbelief is much more difficult with a female action lead. Was surprised by Biowares' own revelation that only 18% of playthroughs were as female Shepard - given all the hype surrounding her on these boards, you'd figure it would be a LOT more.

My mom is in her 50s and plays games. Okay, that's anecdotal, but I've still heard from quite a few female gamers in that age group.

I've met female gamers from 15 to 65 during my gaming years (FPS to MMOs to here).  I'm 47 (OMG I'm old) so I fit in the middle there.  I wonder if that poll reflects so called 'casual' games - angry birds and the like?

Sorry OP I've dragged this off topic...ignore me.

I think the polls do refelect 'casual' gamers but the truth is that the definition of a casual gamer is sketchy and non specific. A vast majority of men could be considered 'casual' gamers as well. Recent polls suggest that female gamers know make up nearly 42% of the gamer population and the number continues to grow. I'm male but I often choose to play as female for my first playthrough. It's a nice change of pace from the many games with male protagonist.

Personally I don't like the terms "hardcore gamer" and "casual gamer". Just because someone likes something different that someone else, that makes them labeled differently. Just because something is oozing with testosterone, explosions, and shooting does not suddenly make those who play it hardcore. I think the depth to which people get into a game determines their core if you will. I know it's kind of silly, but I always get really peeved when people say I'm a casual gamer just because I think anything with a Michael Bay-esque style is cheese to the max.

My highly unscientific and informal polling (AKA: remembering my friends IRL, and conversations on the boards) female gamers seem to cluster. I'm 32 in California, and know many female gamers.  In fact when I was at a party in December and came boucing in to annouce that ME3's first trailer had just been released, there were more women being excited then men (the squees were quite loud!) Of course I hand out with a lot of table top gamers and drama people, so make of that what you will.

38, female, I've been gaming since the Intellivision -- now I feel old.
I play a female character whenever I can, I find it easier to relate. I can say that I'm the gamer in our household, hubby hasn't been really into a game since Neverwinter - damn grad school uses up gaming time, oh well more computer time for me.
