i play on the console version and this is honestly the most frustrating thing i ever encountered in this game. it even tops how the game froze every 10 minutes when it was realeased. on phase 2 when the rocks show up and he uses his fire ability, my teamates lag behind so bad they get caught in the fire and die. i have tried EVERYTHING, even individually moving them though commands, but they decide to go some alternate route around the rocks and either get stuck, or take such a long path they lag too far behind and die. i must have tried this over 25 times and never got past this phase. im using bethany aveline and varric so i dont have resurection. what the hell am i missing? by the time i hit the button and kill the two ads i got a good three or four seconds to get out of there before the fire hits me, but still its not enough because of how bad they lag behind.
Cant beat last boss in legacy because of anoying glitch

It is a tough fight because of those obstacles. I can tell you what I did and hopefully it might help you out a bit (though I was a mage in both playthroughs so far and I found that running Healing Aura helped tremendously).
I think the tendency is to rush through that stone-like maze of stalactites (or stalagmites - whatever they are) and that can lead to pathing errors for your party. What I did was 1.) take my time weaving my way through the maze so teammates don't get lost and 2.) almost follow the path of the flame as it rotates around the room (slowly though, so the flame is just in front of me. It's like you're trailing behind it).
After activating the pillar and fighting the guardians, what I do next depends on where those flames are. If there is enough time, I try to get to the next pillar. If not, I try to wait in the farthest point of the alcove so that when the flame passes it does minimal damage to me and my party. Maybe I'm just imagining that the flame does less damage there. I figure it's better to be caught there and take less damage than to be caught out in the open where the flame is widest.
Hope that helps a bit. If not, maybe somebody else has a better strategy. Good luck.

ive tried staying in the alcove, and my entire party takes roughly 50% damage in the furhest corner. potion cooldowns are too long to eat that every time and bethany cant use heal that fast

This fight is eating me alive because I can't seem to get the mix of activating the stone, killing the foes and then moving on.
I can turn on the stone and then I thought I'd have to kill the guardians before the next burn arrived. Well I can't kill them that fast. I can't run because my party stays to fight and burns up. I can order to move to a point BUT as soon as I turn to fire at the guardians they all run back and right into the fire. Hiding in the alcoves doesn't work either.

lololol i remember doing this fight waay too many times. It isn't that fun with a glass cannon setup such that your companions (e.g. Anders on Vengeance) die in a second or so.
Anyway, what I figured out (after a while) is that there is a strategy to doing it pretty consistently with a lot less running from the scary fire than you would have to otherwise.
- The column he starts drawing power from (i.e. with special effects from it) is the starting fire side, so go to the next column
- the second the fire starts activate the column and kill the shades fast
- as the fire comes through have your companions drink a health potion or kill off the shade (grants you some health)
- follow just behind the fire and do the next column
- Since health potions are usually still on cooldown, instead of doing the next column go skip it and go the next one (giving you almost a full half cycle so should be easy)
- Run away from the fire such that by the time you reach the last column you have lots of time again
I managed to keep my party mostly alive through all the phases through some variation of the above.
I couldn't hide them anyway, because reduced damage or not they didn't have enough health to survive it. So basically I could either run around trying to avoid it (If you don't do anything stupid you run faster than the fire) or drink health potions as you go through it to gain an extra half a lap immediately
oh and yeah, you sorta need a glassy dps setup like mine to kill the shades fast enough :/

Yeah, it can be pretty frustrating from the start, but once you get the hang of it and get your strategy right, it's actually a pretty easy fight.
I basically do what mr_afk said. Run to the statues, activate, focus fire (whole party attacking a single target) on the shades, run to the next statue, rinse, repeat.
Also, don't try to position your squad manually. Just select the whole squad and move around with your PC. Companions will follow you around reliably most of the time. Just keep close and don't get too far away from them, or they tend to get stuck behind those rocks.
Also, nature based weapons are the best choice for this fight. Corypheus and the shades are all weak to nature damage, so equping whatever nature weapons and/or staves you have will help a lot dps wise and you don't even have to switch your weapons once throughout the whole fight.

Doesn't each coloumn 'trasfer' its elemental powers to all party members within range the moment you activate it? It appeared like that from the animation.

It took a few tries but I figured (at least on normal difficulty) you can just leave your entire party near the one of the pillars you need to tag for corintheus to stop his fire spell. The party only takes 8 - 11 fire damage for a few seconds as opposed to the 50 - 60 damage a second when standing in the main room. Tag the pillar just before the fire hits, kill the two shades that appear to replenish health and you should have plenty of time to get around those rock formations. I used this trick the entire fight, didn't use a single potion.

True that. Fire warding and topor magic resistance rune helps alot.......

Running into it blind hurts. After you figure out it dishes big fire damage, all repeated playthroughs should be much easier. Fire warding runes, upgraded Arcane Sheild on mages, Elemental Aegis and a well timed Rally activation work wonders as well. If you don't like those talents for the most part, just take some makers sigh potions with you to respec those talents into your party right before, then chug again to respec back out afterwards if you wish. I had to do that when I played it the second time with my warrior because I realized I forgot to pick up the fire warding rune recipe way back in act one, lol. Just the talents alone made a BIG difference. So talents and runes? Bah. Cake.
I'd still disable anything like Vengance on Anders though, you don't need it. The shades aren't that tough, it's only two at a time and the party gets health after popping them and I personally didn't think the actual fight against the magister himself was all that hard. Have Mythal's Favor bombs for dumb AI's who get stuck on the rocks or for some damn reason up and decide to go the other way around and run straight INTO the fire. God damn it ANDERS! lol If you do lose anyone to the fire, you can easily raise them during the fight with the magister sections with the bombs (follow the yellow dots on the mini map to find their bodies) and/or Ander's regroup spell.
Oh... and pray it doesn't glitch out on you and the dude refuses to come down off the pillar to fight you after popping all the statues and/or if he does come down to fight, his health gets stuck at 1% health forever...
