Why are people giving WiiU such a hard time?

If you think about it though, not many companies have many more franchises than Nintendo. It'd be cool if there could be some new ones for sure, but there are ways to still bring something new while still using those characters. I mean look at all the different ways they've done Mario: Racing, RPGs, platformers, fighting, sports, etc.
I lied. WiiU has two things going for it: Mario RPGs, and Fire Emblem. XD

If I was every looking to buy a console, however, the Wii U is the only one I could ever even consider, simply because it's the only one powerful enough for 1080p gaming.
Who wants to play games at 720p if there is a 1080p option.
After becoming accustomed to running games at higher resolution on my laptop, I could not go back to lower resolution. 768p looks like crap and 720p looks like crap IMHO. The PS3 and Xbox are not even options.

I'm fine with Mario the way it is now. Nintendo uses the Mario name in a lot of different games. Sports, racing, fighters etc. Look at Mario Galaxy great game. Core gameplay is still there but it's a completely different game.
Now Zelda I would like to take on a similar transformation. I think it's time for a true dark fantasy type Zelda and with the Wii U Nintendo can use it to show off the consoles capabilites in terms of visuals and gameplay. How about a Zelda game where Ganon wins or a triligoy spinoff? Let us really see the world. Twilight Princess did a good job with giving us a big enough Hyrule but I really wanna get lost in it. If the game could just change from gather x magic items to defeat Ganon that would be great. The series has had the same gameplay since well A Link to the Past.

Ya that's true. I dunno what else they could really do with Link though... Although I could see how they can make a killer RPG out of Zelda. I'm surprised they haven't done it yet.

The PS3 is capable of 1080p gaming, just few games support it.
If you're in it for the hardware then you should be dissapointed. The Wii U will be released nearly 6 years after the PS3 and it's graphics are only marginally better.
Compare the Dreamcast to the Nintendo 64's graphics. The Dreamcast came out only about 28 months after the Nintendo 64 if we're talking about Japanese releases.

I'm fine with Link and playing as him. What I want is a new villian. Someone who isn't after the triforce or out to rule Hyrule. Someone who isn't obviously evil. Frankly I'm surprised we have never heard of wars between countries. I'd like to see the world beyond Hyrule.

The DS games brought some new villains. And as far as I remember they didn't have a connection with Ganon. And if they did it wasn't a huge connection. This creep was a great villain IMO.

I don't see why they couldn't make a darker Zelda game, with a war between countries as part of the plot. I'd even be happy for it to come back to Ganon, if the plot was clever enough to have had him orchestrate the war. What I'd really like is for Link to start talking, and have some level of dialogue options. Also, I'd love to see main and side quests of sorts, with the main quests probably generally leading Link into dungeons, and the side quests not so much.
Dialogue might be kind of cool. Although it'd be weird for me to here dialogue from someone who was previously mute except for the odd "hm" or "HYAAAAAAAAAA!" Side quests already exist. They're in every Zelda game.

TP there's a side quest to spread Malo Mart across Hyrule and after you do that the golden armour is available for 300 rupees instead of 1000
In Wind Waker if you help that Zunari guy expand his business you get the magic shield thing.

Nintendo is actually the most successful game developer ever. part of that is they just don't churn out crap, that adds time between releases and that's why they need 3rd party software.gamer_girl wrote...

But then you have the problem(?) of people comparing the versions to see which system runs it best(besides the PC), and that's why you need power.

Indeed - I quite enjoyed most of those quests (especially the Biggoron sword one) - I just wish there was more focus on those instead of doing really tiny and almost meaningless tasks to increase the size of some attribute that you have.

I think they do a fairly good job on the side quests. A lot of them do reward you with Pieces of Heart which is kinda nice haha.

There's a big difference here though. Yes, there are innovative games on PSN, XBL and Steam. But those are software innovations. What Nintendo are trying to do are hardware innovations. PS3 is a PSX with higher speeds and more disc space, 360 is basically a PS3 with better (but not free) online services, and Steam is just an electronic games store with a built-in instant messenger overlay.Godak wrote...
I hardly think you can accuse any other gaming platformer of being non-innovative, in content or control scheme. The 360, PS3, and PC platforms give developers far more freedom than Nintendo has given with the Wii. Look at PSN, XBL, or, say, Steam to get an idea of what I mean. I see far more games that take risks on those services. The majority of content on the Wii Store is VC content. Old games ported to the Wii.
Steam, Microsoft and Sony have themselves done very little to innovate, they're just lucky 3rd party developers choose to try new things on their own. Whereas Nintendo try giving developers new ideas through completely unique hardware. You can't compare Nintendo's daring controllers to software. When was the last time the PC had a new, standardised controller? I used a mouse on my old 386 as a kid and I have yet to see anything new on the PC gaming end, hardware-wise, which isn't basically "more of the same but faster".
And heck, as much as I can agree mouse is still the best input for pure performance reasons in an FPS, I'll still take a wiimote over a mouse aaany day if I'm trying to be immersed instead of competing. Metroid Prime 3 on expert control settings was just like being beneath Samus' visor myself, we became one. None of that "my gun and my eyes are glued together and will only ever move together" crap every other first person game has going on (well auto-aim comes to mind as another one that does that, but that's auto-aim so it hardly counts since I don't control it anyway, no? =)).
Too bad you felt that way about MP, MP1 is my favourite game in the Metroid series =) And Mario Galaxy is without a doubt the best game on Wii to me, extremely unique and fun. Too bad it makes you nauseous, must be all the twists and turns, huh? =\\ Tried sitting in a well-lit room, at least a few meters away from the TV, to ensure your peripheral vision sees reality at all times? I've read that helps with nausea people experience from FPS games especially, might work for you too =)Godak wrote...
I love Zelda, Metrod, Mario, etc. I've just gotten...bored. Twilight Princess is pretty much the only Zelda game made in my life time that I could't finish. The Metroid Prime series played like a mediocre first person shooter. Mario Galaxy made me a bit nauseous (not a gameplay complaint, but still...XD).
This doesn't mean that I don't love these series, though. Majora's Mask remains one of my favorite games to date
Props for being a Majora's Mask fan btw, there's so few of us! Everyone keeps praising that OoT, which while it was a good game, just doesn't hold a candle to the atmosphere in MM ;D
Heard of Vaati? I always preferred Vaati over Ganon, myself =)Ringo12 wrote...

Ah, but that is exactly my point! They give developers the tools they need to innovate, while Nintendo trys to force innovation down developers. The gaming community has proven to be very resitant to change, I won't deny that. However, the platforms I mentioned allow the developers to go at their own (admittedly cautious) pace, while Nintendo almost looks down upon third-party developers and screams, "WHY DON'T YOU MAKE BETTER STUFF?!"
Putting pressure on developers to do what you want them to do is almost a sure fire way for them to under perform.

It is quite clear that we have different opinions on the matter, and our experiences vary. I will not begrudge you for enjoying the Wii-based Metroid Prime (I believe they did the third game on the Wii, and ported the first two) games. Games exists to be enjoyed, and more power to people who find enjoyment in them.
For example, I am probably one of the few proud Dynasty Warriors fans. It's is big, dumb, and campy, but it is mindless fun, and no one can tell me otherwise!

Err, giving people the exact same thing they used last generation only with better graphics performance isn't "giving them the tools they need to innovate". That's remaining stagnant and relying on the developers simply coming up with stuff on their own. I'm not looking down on innovative developers who can take existing technology and make something new from it, far from it - I love it - but it's easier to make something truly new if you're working with new material.Godak wrote...

It's kind of like cooking. Sure, it's possible to make a new kind of dish with the same meats you've worked with before. But imagine how much more easily you could find a new and good dish if you were to explore another country's food culture? =)
As long as Nintendo don't force developers to put certain elements into their games, it's all fine and dandy. And Nintendo did force people early on, both with Wii and DS, to horrendous results. Compare the first DS Castlevania to the other two and you'll find the later two use less DS features (they still use DS features though, and with good reason) and are better games because of it - but they couldn't be that good without the DS.
Similarly, while the mini games that mostly acted as "look, the wiimote is awesome!" in Metroid Prime 3 were very bad at best (certainly put there since the game was in development even before the wii came out, so Nintendo pressured... dumb), the overall shooting experience is simply the best console fps controls ever.
Not to mention how no Tales game has been able to allow you to map shortcuts to as many skills as Dawn of the New World on Wii. Why? Because they could use more things than just buttons, "move the wiimote to the side real quick" and "move the nunchuck down real quick" (etc) essentially became digital buttons, effectively giving a most traditionally controlled game like Tales traditional controls with access to tons and tons of "buttons". That isn't bad by any means.
Not to mention the game idea I immedietely came up with during the WiiU unvealing which I posted earlier in this thread. That game could not be created on any other home console and I've never played a game like it, yet I'm pretty sure it could be a lot of fun. Of course, due to the limitations of the WiiU I wasn't aware of during the conference, my game idea doesn't work anyway. But if the system had worked the way I thought it did, my game idea would've worked
Haha, I am not a fan of FPS games either. But Metroid Prime isn't really an fps so much as it's an adventure/exploration game simply seen in first person, so I liked it anyway =) If you ever get the chance to touch MP3 on Wii, I suggest you try it out. Probably not worth buying if you didn't like the GC predessecors, but it's an experience just to touch the very unique and well functioning control scheme. A console fps control scheme that allows you to jump and turn circles in the air without being incredibly inaccurate with small motions? Yes, it's possible =)Godak wrote...

I'm guessing the "floaty" thing you refer to is the lag most games have when the game is trying to understand how you moved the wiimote. I always found that to be a huge limitation of the wiimote, as well =\\ Nothing kills immersion as well as moving your arm only to see your character slash in an unresponsive fashion afterwards. Do note though that these gyros are not used in MP3 (which is the one game I'd like you to see, not cause I'd like you to even play it, it's more like a tech demo if nothing else to me in this convo =)), only the "light gun" part of the wiimote is, and that part never had any kind of lag =)
<-- This video focuses on showing difference in control schemes, and you should be able to see the difference in how you are able to move with the two input devices pretty soon. So yeah, changing up our controllers is a good idea, you never know what you may stumble upon when doing so =)
Hope I'm not coming off as too militant btw, I don't mean to.
Hey, you can grind while looking at Lu Bu's amazing hat? How is that bad? =DGodak wrote...
