Hi, using Pacifens guide, Im trying to get help on my mass effect crashing, here are my details:

Image IPB

Im running the colector's edition disc.

MassEffect2.exe                                   v1.02
MassEffect2Launcher.exe                  v1.01
MassEffect2Config.exe                       v1.03
Uninstall Mass Effect 2.exe                v1.03

Often when I'm on a load screen, the game will freeze up, or jump back and fowards a second, repeating the same bit of the load animation, or simply stay in the load animation forever. Sometimes  ctrl alt delete and minimizing will make it start working again after a while, sometimes it will not.

Also sometimes on load screens, and less often just ingame; mass effect will just crash to desktop.

In all cases the standard windows "mass effect has stoped working, windows is searching for a solution to this problem" message will come up.

I downloaded the v1.02 patch, and I am using my custom modded coalesced, but I got the problem as soon as i started playing, long before I used either mod or patch.

Does anyone know why this is? Thanx for any help.

The minimum graphics card is Video Card = 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support). Supported GPU Chips: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater(**); ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater.

The minimum from the HD 3n00 Radeon generation that will work correctly is the Radeon HD 3650, and the laptop versions of the HD 3400 cards are still weaker than the equivalent desktop versions. If you can lower the screen resolution to 1024 by 768, or to the wide screen setting with a similar total of pixels, you may lower the stress on the little laptop card enough to use it occasionally, but it's going to be overheating a lot.

Here's a longer discussion of the performances of graphics cards in games such as ME-2:

So the problem is my graphics card? How would I change the resolution? Thanks for the answer!

I tried it, it doesnt help, my graphics card has 256mb like it says, and Im pretty sure it has the pixel shader 3.0 support. So, I dont know which card is weaker than which, I have the 3400, does it go the higher the number, the better the card?

The FIRST number, whether from four, or from three, is not related to the performance of the graphics device. AMD Radeons still use the four-digit system, in which the "hundreds" digit is important, and a 3 or 4 there means very slow, a 5 is "in-between", 6s and 7s are gaming quality Mediums, and 8s - 9s are High End Enthusiasts' cards.

That means you want a "670", and a "570" is pretty close, just not quite in Medium.

nVIDIAs naming and numbering has been bouncing all over the map the last three years, and what used to be good (GT) is now for business. What used to be the fence-sitter between Medium and High End, the GTS, is now the only Medium they sell (GTS 450), besides the older GTS 250 and the old GT 240.

For a short while, not counting any of the "100s" which were really all mixed up, the GT200s had a borderline card, the GT 220, which was very similar to the old 8500 GT, and the GT 230, which was an OEM version of the 220. The GT 240 was a "real" Medium card, and the GTS 250 was between Medium and High End.

But those numbers don't help with the GTX400s. For those, just look at the "GT" part, and skip those. The GTS 450 is fine, and the various GTXs are scattered through the High End, with the 460 having been where the GTS card previously hung out.

So uh... the xt1600 you said was recommended for mass effect, and thats lower than mine, is the xt a new brand?
You said the FIRST number doesnt matter, but then you said 3s and 4s were slow, 5s were middle, and 6 was gaming, so... arnt they the first numbers?
Can I change the graphics card in my laptop?
Thanks very much for trying to help.

Oh wait, I think I get it, I need a 3670 instead of my 3400 right? In which case can I change it on a laptop? And what is the point of the first number if it doesnt mean anything?

Thanks for answering!

Each year, new features and functions are added and this is done when new generations appear. The first digit tells you the generation number, so you know, for instance. that a Radeon HD 3n00 was a Dx10 aware generation, and the HD 5n00 is a Dx11 aware generation.

Three years ago, for desktops, there was an HD 3650 and an HD 3690. I do not keep up with laptops because they are so weak when it comes to the major game titles. When a laptop video card actually has the same chip as the same year's desktop card, it is nearly always detuned to make less hit on the battery, and to require less cooling capacity.

All too often, there is no direct relation between a laptop and a desktop video graphics card that seem to be the same because they share the name. In order to sell the laptops for essentially the same prices as the desktop PCs, all kinds of shortcuts have been taken on both quality and performance. The final assembly step now welds the mainboard and the chassis into a solid block that cannot be cut open without destroying one or the other, but most likely both parts.

That means that the graphics card is locked inside, and cannot be changed.

Another tip that may help with crashing to desktop can be found in the following FAQ: http://support.ea.co...detail/a_id/380

Again, if you are under the minimum requirements or barely meet them, you could still have issues up to and including crashing or failure to launch the game.
