ME1 specifically requires DirectX 9.0c, and DX11 is not backwards compatible enough for it. Download and install DX9 from Microsofts website. It should have been installed during the ME1 installation, but Steam does not always do as it should.
What is the actual Catalyst Control Centre version you are running? 8.861 is not a recognised Catalyst CC reviion number.
Also, ME1 is known to have the occasional issue runnnig with multicore CPU's, especially AMD's which often have cores running at slightly different frequencies. Set the game to single CPU affinity.

This sounds more like a corrupted driver / Direct3D file than much else, so if reinstalling Dx9 (link in a moment), hasn't fixed it up, then update the driver as the next step.

Well, now I've installed DX 9.0c, updated the gpu drivers and also set game to single CPU affinity. Still the same thing. Sorry for sounding stupid, but where do I watch my Catalyst Control Centre version then?

You should either have an entry in your Windows Start menu, or open it up from the system tray on your task bar, next to the clock.

I have something called AMD VISION engine control center, and It shows catalyst version 11.7 if that's what you mean. Can't find anything only called catalyst control centre.

You may have to try uninstalling and reinstalling, or you can try EA's official support as a last resort.

OK, so they have changed its name, again.
It is possible that 11.7 is too new for ME1 to be able to work with, but 95% of the time it should work, as AMD drivers are more reliable than Nvidias, which tend to knock out support for older games. Rolling back drivers will be something we will try later if we cant get it to work via other means. Try these things.
1) Go into the Steam utils and make sure the game is being run in administator mode, it need this as well as XP compatibility mode.
2) Disable the Steam overlay and see if that gets the game working. Steam can sometimes interfere with the game.
3) Do a search on your drive for masseffectconfig.exe and run it as administrator, let it scan your system, and save the settings. The search for masseffect.exe and run tat as admin and xp compatibility mode, without going through Steam.

Did the first and second thing didn't help. And I can't find any masseffectconfig.exe only a masseffectconfig.ini and can only open it and read what it says, can't run it in any way.

It should be in the same folder as the masseffect.exe file. Steam should have installed masseffectconfig.exe as part of the install procedure.
If it isnt, the I would recommend verifying the cache intergrity.

Only thing i can think of now is possibly your power supply isnt producing enough grunt for the card to run correctly.
Out of curiousity, what type of monitor do you have, how is it connected, and does the power light on it change colour at all (loss of signal) when the screen goes black?

Well, my psu is 850w+and can run witcher 2 and shogun 2 on highest so I have a hard time seeing that would be the problem. Well, atm I'm using my brother's tv as a screen 26 inch hdmi to a dvi-adapter, and no it does not change. I can try with my real screen later and see if that works.

1920 x 1080, the game was 1024, so I put it as the same as the screen and now it works. Never had any problem like that earlier. hmm, well thanks very much!
