Does the staff automatically do electricity damage when you get it?

No, the type of extra dmg is chosen by you after defeating the 1st guardian.

IMO the best combo, all weapon types & all character levels:
  • Electricity = efficient vs. all kinds of enemies
  • Armor Penetration = (ignores enemies armor) regardless of your own level
  • Slower enemy = 25% chances (1 on 4, not bad) regardless of your own level and affects both atack & moving speed.
The % bonuses (=other powers) are IMO super-low & then almost useless.
Just sayin' ^_^

^ I guess you forgot about Qunari - there are quite a lot of them and they are IMMUNE to electricity.

Yes I forgot but there are no Qunaris in Act 3 except some wandering weak Tal Vashoffs on the coast.
Considering that IMo the best move is to do Legacy at the end of Act 2 or beginning of Act 3...

That didn't prevent me to kick their asses, including the Arishak's. Slowering enemies is much better than a ridiculous 3% increase.

Unless you mod out those lore-breaking resistances.  Something I highly recommend.

How can Qunari be immune to fire?  We actually see a Qunari burn to death in the game.

Maybe their skin is fire immune, but their innards are not. You're talking about the one who self-immolated, right?

What will serve me better in the game: electricity or fire damage?

Electricity seems to work more efficiently across the board, and there are some demons (and other things I can't think of) out there with fire resistances, so I wouldn't go for that.

I always go with electricity, or cold.

The DLC happens before the END game, so the items can't be BETTER that the END game gear.

Yet you can purchase an item pack which gives you a staff which can be used for the entirety of the game. This staff is easily acquired by opening a chest in your house at act one.

The Key really should have a levels up with the user tag slapped on it.

The mage pack infers that Malcolm spent years creating his staff, which gains experience, power, and knowledge from the one whom wields it.

The Key itself is a millennia old artefact that is solely designed to imprison Corypheus, but can only be wielded and improved by the one who is able to prime and utilise it.

By the timescale and by this logic, it would be easily plausible that he created the Staff "Malcolm's Honour" after his knowledge and experience utilising the Key.

Then they should take fire damage from rune-enhanced swords.

But they don't.  Those immunities were added to every enemy in the game (mercenaries immune to cold?  what?) just to add difficulty, without paying any need at all to the coherence of the setting.

What's the best type of elemental damage to choose for this staff?

Since it's already electricity damage, it's completely irrelevant. Pick the one you think is the most fun (you don't get secondary effects from the bonus damage, so it really is just +4 damage, and who cares if somebody is immune to that).

Personally, I do fire, mana drain, and stun chance, but on a staff, none of the properties are really earth-shattering, especially for having to run around with a gnarly schlong hanging off your back.

I think the Key is enchanted to make it lighter.

Also, the two-handed sword looks sort of ridiculous, but on the other hand, I can't help but think that my Hawke would look awesome dueling Meredith with it.

Hawke's Key I think gets MAX if you are lvl 17. Over all uninpressive stats. Nice skin; if they (EA/BioWare) are not going to let it lvl with you then they should let you choose from a pool of stats. After all its power come from all that came before you.

Nature Damage is a good all rounder works very effectively against Qunari humans and the undead though electricity is the better looking 1 the Damage stats are dependant on the stats of the staff you have equipped at the time of picking up the key from rhattigan's corpse though there are mods on the nexus site that make it level up too and trainers available that give you all kinds of options including Inf health, Inf group health and level up/down using one such trainer i found the level cap is at level 1000 for mages which when you have a weapon level up mod results in a weapon that pretty much insta-kills any thing

27 days and you haven't chosen?

If you're playing on nightmare then just grab more electricity since you'll only use that staff for enemies that are weak to electricity. Otherwise, it really doesn't matter.
