I want to say, that the reason I like the idea of Thane dying isn't because I dislike him. Quite the contrary. He is one of my favorite characters in the series.
It's already been established that he's dying from an incurable disease. To just introduce that character point, then to magically erase it in three because of a cure, would be a disservice to a character that I love. A far greater tribute is the heroic last stand, especially if we get to play as Thane during that last stand, the way we got to play Joker during 2. I think that if done right, it would be one of the most memorable moments of the entire series.
This.
Sort of like the "fight for object rho" type thing. You still die no matter what, but if you get to the end you get a extra few seconds of a certain cutscene.

Rip drell mercenary's healthy lungs out.
Cure Thane's keplers syndrome.
Watch Thane die from organ rejection because you didn't bother to check for a tissue match. Or alternately, watch Thane die from his disease anyway because you botched the lung harvesting due to not having a clue as to what in the hell you were doing. Or alternately alternately, watch Thane die from his disease anyway because you're a soldier, not a doctor, damn it, and you just shot the mercs lungs into pulp.

Now Thane has something to live for, either in Shepard, Kolyat or both. The story arch was not about him dying, it was about him not wanting to live.
Many people are understandably unaware of this simple fact because it only really shows if you romance him. A romanced Thane is nothing like the Thane you first brought from Illium.

when u romance him , and u look he's personnal "letter to Siha" " shadow broker" he said that he didnt want to wait he's day in a dead bed he want to fight etc. so either he die in a blast or he got a "cure" and "happy forever" or both been killed by "reapers" or shepard die trow herself to save Thane
either way i still dont thing humanity or the galaxie can win againts the reapers i know its not really a cheer speach but its the thrue.

Amazing how the writing team at Bioware can make us care so much. I can see it now....he will die calling my Shepard "Siha" and his last memory will be that night before the Omega 4-relay when Shepard said "Be alive with me tonight." There will be sad music and a fade to black. I may shed a tear or two and curse Bioware for teasing me with Thane love. It will pull at heartstrings and I guess that's the main point. I just wish there was some way to save him. Give him a dose of oxygen pills or something.....lol

Heh, I was just having this discussion on the Thane fan thread. The fans in that thread have sort of banned discussion on this topic.
I don't know for sure his fate, but I think it would be VERY AWESOME if Bioware gave him a glorious and appropriate death. I want him to go out with a bang.
This. Thane deserves glorious death. Awesome character.

I believe they should have a side-mission to get him cure and a timer so Shepard can hurry it up or else he ends up dead.
That would be cool. I fully support this.
Maybe one where he goes to Kahje to save his Hanar teachers & pay respect to his dead wife.
