I can only direct them to cover that I can see so it's nearly impossible to set up any stategies at all. Oh how I wish for a tactical camera view of the battlefield.

I agree. An overhead map with the cover locations mapped out would open up more strategies. It's not likely to happen though.

There is one moment in Jack's recruitment mission where you can do something like that. It's after all the guards are dead and only the warden is left. Since he's behind his shield, he can't shoot you, either, so I set up a triangle of fire before taking out the last generator. It's not the same, true, but it does give you an idea of how awesome ME3 would be with a tac camera view.

Or at least an overhead view of the battlefield, which you pass just before the fight and can tell the squad to move to different locations that way.

I think GRAW has something like that if I recall.

It would also great if they added waypoints so you can choose the path the squad takes to get to the cover. Gundam Side Story on the Dreamcast had squad waypoints and more squad orders than the ME games and that was 10 years ago.

Will the player's squad and enemy troops be intelligent enough to use gymnastics to move from cover to cover, even if doing so means they move away from cover allowing them to get shot?

See any ME3 video of cerberus troops rolling into your crosshairs.

Did you just confirm your own question with your second sentence? Anyway, most of the videos I've looked at definitely show Cerberus being smart enough to avoid enemy shots by rolling out of the way like Shepard.
