According to the advices here I took the 3% attack increase. Still, I have a problem with these numbers.

3% of what?
Auto attack? How fast is it without the increase?
Spells cooldowns 3% faster? So (as example) not 30 sec, but 29,1 sec? OMG, I'd be uber!

I see it as an advantage, when e.g. a rogue gets this bonus, because they hit so fast and crit so often, that even a small chance adds noticeably to dps. So the seemingly small "3%" would be a good advantage in the long run.

But for mages?

I admit, since I play this game, I've learnt a lot about initially as "ridiculous" denoted bonusses, which were later acknowledged as very useful.
Perhaps someone here can convince me, that even for mages 3% faster attacks are worthwhile.
Thx in advance! :)

3% attack speed increase would mean your autoattacks are 3% faster from base speed.
it's sorta like haste's small and insignificant brother. in the long run, it makes a tiny increase to dps (e.g. you deal 103 hits instead of 100 hits), but when you're under the influence of dual haste already, the +3% does next to nothing proportionally speaking.

i'm pretty sure it doesn't refer to cooldowns.

umm..and what are the other options again?
if i'm remembering right, there's attacks ignore armour, %chance to regain mana, %chance to regain health?

I think what they are referring to is how elemental attacks already ignore armour, making that pointless- and how the %chance to regain mana and health are too low to be of that much use. that leaves the attack speed increase, and even though it's pretty unimportant it adds more to your dps than the others.

You are right; the armour ignoring property is the only one with "significant numbers": 25%. But - as you mentioned - totally useless for a staff. I liked it for my S&S Hawke, but for the mage...
About the other properties: IIRC something like 2% chance of healing 5% or the like and similar to this the mana / endurance-thing.

After all I think, for a DLC-weapon, which *should* be something very special, "The Hawke's Key" is somewhat mediocre.

Yeah.. well, potentially it does have the highest base damage in the game (if you get it late-game).
It still won't be as good as malcolm's honour but it could work as an alternate staff for spirit immunities/electricity weaknesses (i.e. any shades/undead/etc), as it'll be better than generic electricity staves and the eye of the storm.

I think sting might end up been superior as an alternate staff however, especially if you put a primeval rune in it.

But yeah, hawke's key isn't very special really. It would have been nicer if it had rune slots/had bigger customisable bonuses.

It'd be nice if the bonuses were even equivalent to what a normal weapon of that level would get! Get the crit chance boost, and then compare it to a same-level weapon with crit chance boost or with a rune of striking. Bloody sad. I'd almost get "chance to reduce speed" at the third seal just because it's the only one that actually applies at an appropriate magnitude.

(Also the art is fugly as all getout. It's a mechanically inferior, aesthetically inferior weapon that we can't get rid of. o.O)

Well, IMO it's a veritable design flaw.
We are able to enter the DLC as soon as we arrive in our first home in Kirkwall. I started my first run just before the fights against the Qunari started, without reading any of the advices of this board.
When it was done I started reading to check, if I've missed something and was really annoyed to notice, that "my weapon" would have been much better, if I started much later in the game.
When I hate something, then it is to get "good stuff" just for the last 30 minutes of a game. Thus, a levelling weapon would have been appropriate - IMO.

I did Legacy very late game in my latest run (which I started for MotA), and my Key ended up with Ice Damage, Attack Speed, and Crit Damage. I pumped a bit of Dex onto my mage for variety so I have a relatively high crit chance. Malcolm's Honor is better, but I kinda like how the Key looks with the Champion's Robe. I loved Sting, but I did MotA in Act 2, so it's pretty useless now. Next time I'll do it late game, I think.
