Hello, people.  A few days ago, I bought Mass Effect 2, loaded it up, and started playing.  However, 2 hours in, I noticed a problem.  The first time I set foot on the Normandy, right after it finished walking me through the tour of the ship, the game froze on the black screen after fading out.  After a few minutes, I tabbed out, opened the task manager, and closed the game.  After that, I reopened it and it froze in the exact same spot.  This happened a few more times before I finally gave up and went to bed that night.  Today, I turned on my computer and tried to load the game again.  It froze in the exact same spot.  I decided to wait it out and go watch a movie. Two hours later, I came back to find the game still frozen in the exact same spot.  So, I'm coming here with my complaints.

Specs:
- Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86ghz
- Windows Vista Home Premium
- 2gb DDR2 Ram
- Nvidia 1gb 8400 GS (I know it's below the minimum requirements, but it runs the first game at fairly high settings and puts out a reliable 20+ fps on this one at 1200x800 aside from this freezing issue).

I can't give more than that, because of problem #2: The configuration utility has, with one exception, never stayed open for any longer than 5 seconds.  During that time, it has been completely unresponsive.  This happened every single time I have ever tried to open it except one, and I am under the distinct impression that this was due to pure luck.

Any help would be very much appreciated.  Again, my computer has had no trouble running the first game, the demo, or the levels of the game prior to my entrance to the new Normandy.

Thanks for the help.

EDIT:  I validated the files through steam, and everything is now accounted for.  The game now works, but the config utility still crashes.

The configuration utility will crash in a couple of situations, both of which are indicative of problems. Most often, it crashes with a really low quality video device, such as one of Intel's chips. It also doesn't like there to be missing drivers, and you haven't named those yet. You also didn't name any kind of audio component or the driver for that. With such an incomplete summary, even a WAG is difficult.

I've kind of forgotten how to find out what the drivers and components are. Can you guys remind me?

You can start from this:

Get All the Details on the Hardware Inside Your PC
http://www.pcworld.c...de_your_pc.html

That still omits IDs for drivers, I fear . .

Nevertheless, Google is your friend, and will lead you to some place to walk you through driver identification.
