Forgive my ignorance, but I don't see how to save my game.
I know that F5 is supposed to save, but nothing happens, and the "save" option on my menu is greyed out.

The save option in your System Menu should be grayed out when you're in combat, but should be active otherwise.
Are you playing on a console or PC?

I am playing on a desktop PC.

There have been some issues depending on what patch you're running. This older thread has some info and additional links.

Are you past the intro? Saving is disabled until you are past the cinematic intro. (after the part where you create your Hawke's face)

Press F5 to save, press F9 to load.

Thank you all for your help. I had to uninstall the game, then reinstall it, making sure that I had checked compatibility for Windows XP. I made sure everthing (even the patch) was compatible. And now it works.
