So, as a summer exercise, I thought I'd write a fan-fic (disclaimer: I will probably not write a fan-fic). Sort of an abbreviated novelization of the OC, though for the most part it'll be more about the character than the story. However, I have several characters which would make acceptable stars. So I am asking for advice. Here are the options.

Naabi (CE female Drow warlock). Probably the most interesting character for me. This is what happens when you are possessive to a psychotic degree.

Aman (LG male Human paladin/sorcerer/EK/Harper). The most story-centric character. I'm gonna throw some pathfinder stuff in here (they did amazing things for sorcerers) to make it more interesting.

Eli (NG male Aasimar Spirit Shaman). Playing up the rp abilities of this class. Thought mostly of one particular scene for this guy, the rest is generic.

Bartholomew (NN-->LN male Earth Genasi Fighter/FB/NN). Just an excuse to try out the class more than anything.

Rite (LN-->NE male Tiefling fighter/wizard/EK). Probably going to be the most difficult one to write. What happens when one is twisted beyond recognition.

Erasticus (LG-->NG Wild Elf monk/druid/sacred fist). Another favorite, not particularly because of the story, but because this is the first character I played (worst beginning ever. I was almost constantly dead because of a) first time ever playing this game or even anything like it and B) difficult class to start with and I didn't know about the xp penalty)

Onoma (LN male Moon Elf ranger/wizard/AA) AND Angel Silvertongue (CG female Aasimar bard/RDD/barbarian). Just wondered what it would be like if Daeghun had a child as well.

So there it is. I have a few pre-written blurbs for some of the characters if you're interested, as well as character sheets. Also, being a story, I may at times play up or tone down their abilities. Particularly in the area of skills. Just fyi.

Interested in hearing your thoughts.

I'll be very interested in what you come up with. This isn't because I love the OC--in fact, I find it pretty generic in terms of story and characters--but because roleplay writing for an actual in-game character is a subtle and tricky art. I strongly feel that a roleplay story based on something that happened in-game (whether in a SP or PW environment) should be interesting enough to read on its own, but should also be able to be understood in in-game terms. One has to walk a thin line between giving a boring blow-by-blow of the action on the one hand and pure fabrication on the other.

In terms of which character you should write about, I don't really think anyone else's opinion matters that much. You have to feel the character yourself. I once read an author (I don't remember who) describing her characters clamoring at her to tell their stories--they had gone from inventions in her head to actual people in their own right. I firmly believe that allowing your characters to have this kind of life is at the heart of all great roleplay.

It matters enough that I asked for it. I want to write them all, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered listing them as options. I merely wish to see which one others are most interested in.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Fair enough! I certainly didn't mean to suggest that you were wrong to ask for others' opinions, and in fact talking about your characters before you start writing for them can be fun, too! :) I have a predilection for holding surprising story stuff back that makes me shy away from giving away too much up front, for better or for worse! ;)

So, I'll give a couple quick reactions to your character list, and you can feel free to take those thoughts with the caveats that I gave previously (i.e. it's totally up to you).

The Earth Genasi Fighter/Frenzied Berserker/Neverwinter Nine strikes me as a bit of a forced background (and he strikes me hard! :-p). If "Earth genasi are slow to act, ponderous in thought and set in their ways..." then going through strong alignment swings becomes tricky to characterize (especially in terms of the FB/NwN combination). Of course, sometimes a challenging character framework gives you something interesting to hang your roleplay on!

On the other hand, the Wild Elf Monk/Druid/Sacred Fist character seems quite intriguing. A monk/druid combination can make sense in terms of power-gaming, but I've often found it challenging to roleplay in an authentic way. Throwing a somewhat woodsy, reclusive background in there could give it an interesting direction.

At any rate, have fun with your project!

Bartholomew won't be particularly hard, as I already know his story pretty well. But yes, my wild elf will be difficult, as I only have bits and pieces to put together rather than anything that flows. I may change him around to LN, but that in some ways will make it harder. Motivation is difficult =P

Thank you for your thoughts.

This may be a silly question but did you know you can write your own adventure with the toolset? And others can enjoy your adventure in-game. Think of it as the ultimate writing tool!

Of course you may already know that but it is pretty common that folks who talk of the OC don't know about the other cool parts.

There is a thread stickied in this forum called the "Welcome Thread". Give that a read for more on what NWN2 can do.

Yes, I was aware of such a thing, but am terribly lazy and not very creative. It is far easier to modify the work of others than to create something of my own =P

Thank you though, it is gratifying that another thinks I am that capable.

He didnt suggest you were capable per se, just that you have the option to build.

(joking)

I like to do a bit of writing myself but on a less concrete plot world - I dont write fan fiction, I write original science-fantasy stories, so I would be interested in sampling your work after you have gotten some of it down in writing. Good luck :)

Something I did several years ago. Still vaguely pleased with the concept, not so much with the execution. Which is why it is still unfinished =P

I think it's a great idea. What a great way to flex your mental muscles. I would offer that there are several ways to go about the writing. You can use the Ominiscient 3rd person point of view and that allows you to tell what everyone is thinking, feeling and doing at any given point in time, without having to have each character know what's going with all the others. Then there's the 3rd person limited perspective, where the story is told from the point of view of an "observer" who might be there, witnessing the events and experiencing some of it, but is writing the story as a "chronicle" of what the heroes or villains are doing. Like a scribe or bard who is acting like a journalist, where they are not really part of the action. Then there is the first person perspective. Obviously this is the kind where your character's point of view and nature comes out in the perspective of their writing and their descriptions are based on what they see, think and feel, even if they're writing about the other characters.

I've been told that you should keep one point of view and leave it at that. I've seen where that works really well. I've also seen (and this is actually fairly common) where the story unfolds from the perspectives of several different characters, even though they all tell it in either a first person or third person perspective. I've even seen stories that tell the story with a mixture of 3rd person omniscient and 1st person narrative.

I think your characters, as varied as they are, would benefit from something closer to a 3rd person omniscient perspective and allow for focus on different characters' points of view from a limited 1st person perspective. This gives you the flexibility to tell the story from an open perspective to foreshadow events coming up, while also allowing you to breathe life into each character from their own perspectives when it comes to describing how they feel about the other characters, their motivations compared to the others and such like that.

I can't comment on your character mix other than to say, if you really mix the alignments within the same party, it allows you the option of having one or more of the characters to be deceptive and appear to be one type of alignment when they are really not. A deception if you will, or the ability for them to integrate into a party of adventurers not due to alignment compatibility, but to use them or be with them for either common cause or an ulterior motive where the 'services' of their companions affords them a higher chance of survival.

Those are things the game cannot show for your party and thus can allow you to flesh out the events and occurrences in the story line through the differences in the characters in your party. This would also provide you the opportunity to weave in the characters and their "behind the scenes" machinations that may make some of the story sequences in the OC make more sense.

I would be interested in seeing how your efforts progress.

Good luck to you.

dunniteowl - a mix of 3rd and 1st was actually what I was planning on. Glad to have some support for that.

M. Rieder - thankee, that's one vote thus far =P

Well, as my disclaimer stated, I have not written a fanfic. I started, but then my fiancee left me, and all motivation/inspiration has left me, so I will not be doing much for a while. Sorry to disappoint (don't worry, it wouldn't have been that good anyway).

Don't hype your skills so highly. Folks won't believe it. Hang in there, bucko and chin up, dammit, we need to take some mug shots for your files.

Yeah write your story. Now I want to write a story too.

If we write a story, does it have to be based on the game? I don't like being chained to a story already written and known by others. I'd like to make something totally unrelated to the game storyline.

The game is very much not related to the official story. Anything goes, even what you dreamed last night, cthulu or any other insanity. Quite a few people like the forgotten realms world though since this game is based on D&D, but that is more lack of creativity than anything else.

Just remember, fan fiction is basically for the General forums. Possibly best to post it with a link and not the whole thing here. The Powers That Be are unOfficially Looking Askance at Fan Fic posts. Just so you know.
