Depends what you're after. I would say that Anders makes for a much more interesting romance story-wise, but Merrill's is very sweet and is probably more emotionally healthy.

Really, depends on what you like. And who your Hawke is.
I have a Femage, who moved on, from friend!Anders to friend!Merril, and sure, her story was less tragic, but I have 100% certainty, that if some Big Baga Mysterious Force of Narrative Convenience won't kill her, she will be relatively sane and happy.
Can't say that about most Hawkes paired up with Anders. My advice: if you wish to romance him someday, do it with Hawke who really can handle that, not only thinks so.
And Merril is a sweetheart. If you're the protective type, she's best. Just bear in mind, that it's like keeping a kitten, a bit reckless one, willing to die, to achieve what she believes she wants to achieve, and who gets lost a lot.

So, yes, conclusion: I'm telling you to go for Merril. And then go for Anders, just with someone mentally strong enough, or just as crazy. Or do a tragedy. That works too.

we can't do Merrill, she's got far too child like an innocence, it feels perverted

male Hawke and Anders for me, even though we're trying them all (it's about to be Fenris's turn as I am playing a mage), but wow Anders is PASSION!

besides with Merrill I keep thinking Torchwood lol

Anders is wonderfully tender, sweet, and bat **** crazy, which is always a plus if you like bat **** crazy ;p

Merrill is sweet, angelic, and.. well I guess she's just a different kind of bat **** crazy.

When it boils down to it for me, I can't romance Merrill. She's to child-like for me. M!Hawke went the Isabela route, because Isabela is over-the-moon Awesome. Plus, she has a ship. Bonus!

Why not just do one of both? You don't have an ultimate single and only that one favorite. For my F!Hawkes I split them evenly between Anders and Fenris, depending on who they are as people ;p

can't change Anders's sexuality, he's gay and that's that (even if it is "only" a game)

Yeah, I have separate characters for all the romances I enjoy. My mage who romances Fenris is quite a bit different from the mage who romances Anders, and the rogue who is in love with Isabela is waaaaaaay different from the rogue who is single for Sebastian.

I personally cannot romance Merrill. I like her as a friend, but I would never, ever touch her romantically, it feels wrong. But if you like her, and Anders, why not roleplay two different characters, one who is braced for the tragedy of being with Anders through the end, and another for Merrill?

I much prefer Anders, but then again, I have a thing for tragic (fictional) relationships. Plus that first kiss scene... yum.

I've romanced Merrill as well, but it felt a little awkward to me. She just seems so innocent that it's hard to think about her in that context; even romancing her with my nicest Hawke ever, I felt like I was taking advantage of her. I also didn't like the way she hero-worshipped Hawke; I'd rather be seen realistically, as someone with flaws as well as good qualities.

And by that logic so is Fenris, Merrill and Isabela. Since, you know, they can all be gay-manced.

Isablla would sleep with anything that moves!
Fenris had my gaydar working the moment I saw him, as did Anders in Awakening
Merrill? will never be able to think of her sexually - looks like I'm not alone there

ooh another wicket! (sorry, not DA)

I think the fact that he's nailed at least one woman in canon and seems to enjoy such endeavors before he even meets Hawke defies that supposition.

But I guess "I always believed that people fall in love with the entire person, not just the body" only holds true if said body has a penis. Cool.

Also, as has been stated before, Anders is the most passionate and tragic, but Isabela is by far the healthiest of the romances.

I can't speak to Merrill, since she's so much a little sister figure in my eyes, I can't bring myself to seriously romance her.

I flat-out adore both characters. Just as they are.

That said, Anderss romance appeals to me more. It's deep, tragic, and ridiculous, at times. As is Anders.

I can't say anything about the Merrill romance because I've never been able to do it. My Hawkes care deeply for her, but they want to shelter and protect her, and not in a way that lends itself to romance. As others have said, it's a sisterly vibe.

To quote Mass effect here:
"Anders is... not a stabilizing element, Champion."
"Having Anders around is just... begging for a sword up your ass. Without all the sweet talk.

"Merrill is way too nice of a girl for the number of ways she knows how to kill people."
"Merrill seems like the kind, sensitive, forbidden magic type? You know those are always great to have around, A real cuddler."

"It's just my opinion though, no need to, ah, spread it around."

I've been noticing that people haven't had as compelling of arguments as I had hoped. I feel that I should say MY reasons for liking them both. Keep in mind that I'm a male mage Hawke.

Anders: He was my best friend in Awakening, and although I never saw him romanticly then, the changes in DA2 fixed that. He's plagued by something that not only causes him suffering, but drives him to be a hero to all mages in these perilous times. He's a grey warden, and yet the taint isn't the darker side that drives him. I admit to preffering a guy romance, especially one as hot as Anders.

Merril: She's just my type, short, short black hair, shy, elven, and a blood mage. She gives up everything, including her life, for what she believes. As previously mentioned, I played her rivalmance and I loved the type of woman in her, such fire. She's also a blood mage, and while she starts off consorting with a demon, she later learns her lesson. Finaly, I would love for her to have my child, dalish, trained to be a keeper, (as elven as it gets) and a blood mage who could teach all kinds of powerful magic to our child.

If you truly cannot decide, why not flip a coin for which character to pursue first and save the other character for a later Hawke?

I'm trying to pick a favorite character, so I can make a perfect profile.Posted Image  And no one say that there isn't such thing as a perfect profile.

The Perfect Profile has Little Gryphon & Daisy in it.

I still say Anders is worth it just for that first kiss. The noises are wonderful.

I tend to have a bit of a weird mixed reaction to Merrill. On the one hand, she's adorable! And I love the first few companion scenes in her house and listening to her cute little banters. On the other hand... I just don't find her compatible for romancing, since it does feel like I'd be taking advantage. And my characters tend to be anti-blood magic, which nets rivalry points, but some of the red rival options when talking to her are just so... horrible I can't see a Hawke who cares about her using them, so her frienship/rivalry bar always ends up hovering in the middle.

Anders, however? I think he makes a great tragic romance, and his romance is heavily intertwined in the plot. Oh, and that first kiss scene. Mm. That's perfect profile material right there.

I've chosen Merrill. I know more people are for Anders, but I just preffer blood mage to abomination. And all those personality traits that atract me to Anders I also have, so I can have both by being with Merrill.

I find the Rival Romance with Merrill is the most fitting since the net of it is not actually about Blood Magic. It's about Demons and the focus on a dark past at the cost of even yourself for people who don't even want the help you are trying to offer. Blood Magic is just a part of it. Majority is just about all the dealing with demons. That is what tends to net you rivalry. Merrill doesn't care either way about Blood Magic. What she cares about more it seems is that she at least thinks all spirits have something to offer. She thinks one helped her in the past. How much of that is true is up to the player.

Regardless, everything in dialogue when my Hawke seemed to disagree with her it was not about blood magic it'self. For example when she first opened that gate using blood magic. It's pointed out that she summoned a demon "It helped didn't it?". Yes blood magic was brought up because it was how she fueled it. Meanwhile the summoning of the spirit is the main concern.

The main reason I can never see myself having Anders be a romance is that he was constantly changing his story and I just can't handle broody. Even if he was all friendly to me. I wouldn't tolerate someone acting the way he was to everyone else. I'm sure others can tolerate him for it. But if I knew someone like that in real life? I wouldn't even give them the time of day. So why should I bother with that in a game?

agree, fantasy stuff

have decided to play through romancing everyone, we're going girl on girl this time with Isabella
On the final run through I am going back to male Hawke with full on Anders
then I'll got back to origins and marry Alistair again.

Wonder what's in store for us in DA3 ???

Till you find out Adam Howden made out with his hand on the booth to come up with those noises.

... then, when ever you go through the scene, you giggle like a 12 year old. :P

Personally, I'd say just sod the both and go with Fenris :innocent:

But, each have their merrits. Anders is tender, obsessive, and more intrigual to the story.

Merrill is sweet, naive, and over-the-moon for Hawke in a .. 16 year old loves her boyfriend and no one will tell her differently.. kind of way.:pinched:
