Am playing DAO Ultimate Edition for the Mac. Have created a cunning-based, backstabbing DW (daggers) Human Noble Rogue and am at Level One.
1. The first rogue I created just stood around when the fight started in the kitchen against the rats. Both Dog and Ser Gilmore immediately began fighting them. I guess Dog was taunting them (successfully) because all of them just ran past me toward Dog and Ser Gilmore. Although I tried to hit them by clicking on them, my character seemingly did nothing (at least, no animation of him using his daggers). (I wanted to create a Rogue with better stats, so I am now using a different Rogue.) Anyway, I haven't entered the kitchen yet with my new Rogue. So how can I get my Rogue to participate in the attacking action?
2. Should I disable all the automatic combat tactics of any character that I am controlling, or are they automatically disabled as soon as I start the controlling the character?
3. How well do the combat tactics work for companions? I thinking that Alistair, Morrigan, and Wynne will work well with my Rogue but have no idea yet of how easy or diffiicult it will be to get them to do what I want. Is there information already posted somewhere about this?
I'm used to playing RPGs solo or online MMORPGs in the company of live people with whom I can communicate by headset. I did play NWN with Grimgnaw as my companion, so I have some idea of how to control one companion, but three others? It means that I will have to learn each of their skills and talents and think about how best to upgrade them. That's a lot of information to absorb! Any advice you can give will be appreciated!

Tactics are automatically disabled for the character you take control of. As for the general usefulness of tactics, I'd say they work fairly well in most situations. Special situations such as boss fights require micromanagement.

You have to manualy control the current character you have control of. This is by game design, otherwise they will never do anything but stand there. Otherwise when your controling another character they follow their tactics.
That answers 1 and 2.
Well you will not get a straight correct answer about combat tactics, some people prefer to turn them all off and continualy pause and unpause the game to assign each and every action for everyone at any given moment. Micromanaging everything manualy. Others setup their combat tactics by the presets and never have any problems while others have extremly complicated and detailed tactics for each of their compainions. Any of those ways is correct though some require less work then others.
While still other refuse to even use companions and solo the game exclusivly and usualy at the highest difficulty settings.
Also your party make up dosnt really matter, some things work better then others of course but you can play with any combo you want and not have much problems. (Dont want to have a healer in party, just craft more healing items. etc.)

Thank you for your helpful replies! Is there an "Attack Nearest" or an Autoattack key on the PC keyboard, so that I can easily get my Rogue (whom I am controlling) to start attacking the rats in the kitchen and to continue attacking them until I tell him to stop or they are all dead?

I tried Attack nearest visible, but it doesn't work if the character doesn't see the enemy. I had one fight where Dog did nothing while looking in the opposite direction from the enemy. I changed it to Attack Highest/Lowest Health, and I haven't had any problems. i'm using console, though.

If you don't have mods installed, You need to use the few slots available for passive tasks like switching back to ranged weapons, heal themselves and such. You can't expect them to be smart with the system unless you have something installed that gives you 20+ slots so you can give them some sort of basic AI.

So, in other words, the only way to get the character YOU ARE CONTROLLING to attack is to
1) pause the game (so that the enemies -- in this case, the fast-running rats in the kitchen -- stand still long enough for you to place your cursor on one of them)
2) right-click on the enemy you have chosen (or left-click on the enemy you have chosen and then press the QuickBar key that will activate a talent -- like Dirty Fighting), and
3) unpause the game.
Then after that enemy is dead, repeat 1, 2 and 3 above until the next enemy you have chosen is dead. And keep doing this until every enemy is dead.
Is my understanding correct? If so, this seems like a very awkward kind of combat system, much more awkward and tedious than the combat system in Neverwinter Nights, where the character I was controlling automatically attacked and fought all the enemies in his melee range unless I directed him to run out of melee range.
