I have searched repeatedly and never found any mention of this topic, but it's really bugging me. I haven't played this game since the 90s so I am a born-again newb. Two main problems I have noticed.

1) Ring of Protection +1 actually LOWERS saving throws by 1
It's supposed to give you better saving throws and AC, but on the character sheet the saving throws are all -1 whenever I wear the ring. I found two different +1 protection rings, and they both cause this problem on all my characters.

2) Saving throws get screwed up when levelling
Kagain went from level 2 to level 3 and his saves dropped for no apparent reason. Pretty severely as you can see:

Pa/Po/De from 14 down to 8
Rod/Staff/Wand: from 16 down to 10
Pet/Ply: from 15 down to 14
Breath: from 17 down to 16
Spells: from 17 down to 11

I tried levelling Kagain up with gear as well as naked, the outcome is always the same no matter how many times I reload and try again: the saving throws decrease severely. I think this may have happened to my main character as well (paladin) earlier in the game, who seems to have somewhat low saves (not as bad as Kagain though).

Does anyone have any idea what this problem is, and how I can fix it? Playing BG1 + TotSC bundle

The problem is that you are thinking in third edition terms, where a higher saving throw is better.

It isn't.

Saving throw is the number that you need to BEAT with your die roll in order to make the save. If you have a save of 16, then your roll needs to be a 17+ to make it. Lower saves are better.

Doh! Thank you for that Matuse, I did indeed have it backwards. All these different editions and rules confuse the heck out of me!
