I really wanted to like him (I happen to share his name so I can't help to feel a bit of sympathy I guess :> ).
He was acceptable in the start of the game, but he turns completely whack quite fast :pinched:

I felt like the Warden was me hence my attachment to the characters was deeper felt regardless if I liked them or not, I felt something for each. I felt like Hawke, was ...her (in my case) , and all attachments were experienced by her as opposed to me, hence less attachment to the characters overall. This doesn't mean I didn't like or dislike them. I only felt less for them in either direction because frankly, I had less of an opportunity to get to know them, as dialogue options were sparce, and watching hawke talk didn't help either.

Legacy actually remedied that partially as I felt I was with one party, and all were involved in the same quest together  all having input contributing to the feeling of experiencing one adventure together.

This is how I felt too, almost exactly. ^_^

For me, I would also add that in DA2 a higher percentage of the characters evoked frustration from me, rather than affection.

Very well said Lynn, I have to say that you nailed it.  Because the Warden was MY Warden, I was so much more invested in everything around me, the whole experience and I also poured so much of me into my Warden, I formed these solid bonds with my companions, like I was there adventuring with them. Of course I had my more favourite and less favourite companions in DA:O but they were my gang.  With Hawke it wasn't really MY Hawke, so the personal connection was greatly lessened. Again, I had my more favourite and less favourite of the DA2 companions but overall I had more more favourite companions in DA:O than I did in DA2... plus much stronger personal connections.

PS. As to the Anders discussion... well, that really ain't Anders, cuz Anders for me is the Awakening Anders. What we got in DA2 was someone masquerading as him and rather badly, might I add.

Oghren-hate should be stopped at all costs! Oghren is amazing character. I'd even say Oghren is better character than any of the DA2 cast.

About Anders.. weell, I don't like the whining and his obsession with mage freedom and I don't like how he looks really stupid in DA2.. but perhaps I have some loyalty towards him and I would say he isn't as bad character as Merril, Fenris or Isabela, which, of course, isn't saying much but.

Weirdly enough, it's the reverse for me. I didn't feel enough for my Wardens to really continue on with them. My Wardens were just blank player slates to me, my Mary Sues. I don't even remember their names, whereas I felt like I was actually roleplaying my Hawkes (and I actually remember their names too). I didn't feel much of an attachment to many of the NPCs in Origins either. I liked them, but I felt distant, whereas I feel more towards the DA2 characters, whether I like the characters or not.

For example, I like Morrigan, but I don't feel any particular attachment to her. Because of the gift system, getting her approval up wasn't difficult - I hardly had to bring her along, and I only chatted to her in the camp when necessary (i.e. to get the Flemeth-killing quest).

I came into DA2 not expecting too much attachment to the characters, but I was pleasantly surprised by my sudden feelings of attachment to Fenris (not just because he's a romancible - I've romanced both Zevran and Alistair and felt little attachment). When he fell in battle, I was all "NOOOOOOOOO" and not just because I lost a good Melee DPS. I felt that I had to work for all those Friendship points, and the lack of gifts helped me feel that I really had earned his approval instead of just spamming gifts for quick easy approval.

Regardless, I can just sum up this entire debate about which companions were better by saying the these four words: "Your Mileage May Vary".

Edit:

I agree.

Leave Oggy alone, he was fun. I liked to drag him along in DAA just to annoy everyone else. Image IPB

Yes I was, DAO characters might have had more interactions but most of the characters I was neutral to or hated(Oggy) where with DA2 I cared for everyone, even Anders and Fenris.

He was not fun. He was a horrible character that had no pros, was annoying and a waste of space. The advantage DA2 has over DAO is that, no Oggy, thank god. Hope I never have to see that trash again.

There is no opinion with Oggy. There is only the truth. Truth is he is a piece of trash that makes going through DAO painful. :P

Ah yes, hanging around with a horrible drunkie archetype that does nothing but burp is sooo fun i don't even

Too bad, because most of the dwarves in DA:O were awesome. No wonder they didn't like Oghren

No.
He's more than just toilet humor.
unlike....say Anders, who is nothing but a whiny preachy hypocrite ***Hole, one of the main reasons that going through DA2 is so hard.;)

I actually felt like half of the DA2 party were like family, unlike the rag-tag bunch of misfits we had in DAO. There was a stronger bond between them. I loved both parties, but the interaction the DA2 folk had was better. Oh, and there was no Wynne. *shudders*

Oghren was pretty cool before Awakening came in. His Denerim speech still makes me teary eyed at times.

I still haven't really connected with any of the characters in DA2, Hawke included. I felt more like they were all connected to, and friends with, each other, going about their lives without Hawke. Hell, they came to Hawke's house more-often-than-not to speak to his/her Dog than him/her. I felt no real connection between Hawke and his/her companions nor Hawke/his/her companions and myself.

Look, if we're talking about Oghren, then you need to realize something.

Until you've seen Oghren drunk and naked in battle, you don't know Oghren. And that's how he'll make a cameo in DA3. He'll be naked and drunk wielding his Darkspawn Ravager.

edit: but to be serious, take him to see the Guardian.

Bioware. Make this happen, Drunk Oghren fighting naked, and no matter how bad DA3 is, I will buy it just for this.
We need more naked Oghren.

They grew on me, but it was definitely harder to warm up to the characters due to the lack of conversation. In DA:O, you could have philosophical discussions with Sten, hear life lessons etc. from Wynne, so on so forth.

What I REALLY miss though is all the conversation at the beginning, when you as the warden didn't know any of your companions well, particularly with both male and female love interests--they each had very unique and endearing ways of shying away from the Warden (Zevran with flirting, Morrigan being cold, Alistair and Leliana... kind of stumbling out of a conversation) that made them seem much more relateable than the companions for DA2.

I felt more attached to Hawke than the Warden and probably felt much the same in both games about the companions.

 Lets see

I'll match them with those that I feel are similar to the other.

Sarcastic, second most important character: Shale and Alistair beats out Varric despite the dwarf being my most favorite character in DA2.

Sexy, complicated character - Isabela has got nothing on Morrigan
The innocent, cute character - Leliana and Merrill is evenly matched although Merrill's naivety was more annoying.

The motherly friend - Aveline and Wynne are both equally decent but both didn't really interest me in comparison to the others in the cast.

The silent/moody fighter - Not even a competition as Sten is just way the ultimate badass in DA. Fenris was my second favorite in DA2 but I don't really think

Miscellaneous: Oghren (my penultimate most disliked character in DA:O) and Anders bored me just as well as my siblings.

So it ends up being:

1. Shale (DA:O - David Gaider)
2. Alistair (DA:O - David Gaider)
3. Morrigan (DA:O -David Gaider)
4,Varric (DA2- Mary Kirby)
5, Sten (DA:O -Mary Kirby)
6. Isabela - (DA2 - Sheryl Chee)
7. Leliana - (DA:O -  Sheryl Chee)
8. Fenris - (DA2 - David Gaider)
9. Wynne - (DA:O - Sheryl Chee)
10. Aveline - (DA2 - Lukas Kristjanson)
11. Zevran (DA:O - David Gaider)
12. Bethany - (DA2 - Jennifer Hepler)
13.Oghren - (DA:O - Sheryl Chee & Jay Turner)
14. Carver - (DA2 - Lukas Kristjanson)
15. Anders - (DA2 - Jennifer Hepler)

haha, I just to say that this ranking is not about who is the best but who I personally prefer.

After seeing my list, I think David Gaider and Mary Kirby needs to seriously write more of the DA characters. ;)

Although I surprised Mr. Kristjanson went so low on my DA writer ranking since I loved his works on Joker and Grunt although in retrospect he also wrote Jacob and Kaidan which were ok in ME.

Well, for me I loved to romance with Merrill. She was the only one I actually ever felt attached to in DA2. Everyone else was very unlikeable. Fenris, and Anders are the moody/mopey sorts. Isabella was a pretty shallow personality to me. I think Varric and Aveline were good characters in and of themselves, but again they seemed distant and quite honestly uninterested in a real friendship with Hawke.

I think that stems from the large lack of conversations you can have with them. In DA:O I used to relish heading to camp occasionally to get to know more about them. You had maybe 3 conversations with each character total throughout the game.

Okay... He's my take on the characters I love and hate...

DAO
The Hero of Ferelden - Hate
Dog - Love
Alistair - Hate
Morrigan - Love
Leliana - Love
Sten - Love
Oghren - Hate
Zevran - Love
Wynne - Love
Loghain - Hate
Shale - Hate

5 hates, 6 loves

Awakening
Orlesian GW PC - Hate
Anders - Love
Oghren - Hate
Sigrun - Love
Nathaniel - Love
Justice - Hate
Velanna - Hate

4 hates, 3 loves

DA2
Sarcastic Hawke - Love
Dog - Love
Bethany - Love
Carver - Hate
Varric - Love
Aveline - Love
Isabela - Love
Fenris - Hate
Merrill - Love
Sebastian - Hate
Anders - Love

8 loves, 3 hates

So yeah, I can say that I prefered DA2's characters over DAO's. But that's only the one you see the most, and play with. And yeah, I mostly hated Awakening's characters... In conclusion, I felt more attached to Dragon Age 2's cast over all the rest. But I do miss some of the earlier characters, like Zevran and his sexy accent. :innocent:
