Me: Hey, friend!
Friend: Sorry. Can't talk to you. It's not the right time of year. Plus I don't have any quests or problems to discuss, also we have to be in my house, I can't speak to you outdoors or anything silly like that.
Me: But... I wanted to know about-
Friend: We should move on.

Honestly, the only characters I didn't care much for were Carver and Bethany, but that probably wouldn't be the case if they had more screen time.

Plus, I think the DA2 cast mixed things up a little from the typical fantasy cast. In Origins we had the wise old mage, the crude drunk dwarf, the suave and roguish assassin, etc. (Pretty much in keeping with this article.) In DA2, they mixed it up a bit and I think we got some pretty cool characters out of it. Not to dismiss the Origins cast, of course. I love those guys dearly. But in terms of who I really got attached to, the DA2 cast wins it.

apart from that i liked hawke! for sure! but not much apart from that
i miss the campfire where u could talk to everybody, or even the spaceship like in ME2. seemed like a chore to visit everybody, specially because i didn't really care anyway ;-)
i really always did go to my friend in the tavern to have a blast
but i agree DA:O was better in this departement.

Oh what's this? I'm talking to you, random companion, right after we fought darkspawns and you're covered in blood. Oh! What's this again? You're now talking about how you were happy in your youth? Totally irrelevant. I prefered how the conversations were done in Dragon Age 2. At least, it felt like they were more focused on the quests than losing their time talking to your character. It added a serious touch to the game.
Ah yes, because the fact you chose to talk to your companion then is the game's fault isn't it?

They were also pretty much cliché RPG companions (healer granny, charming prince, witch b***, drunk belching dwarf, silent warrior giant, and so on), the DA2 characters are more original.
The overall cast in DA2 is so much more diverse and interesting, and the group dynamics are a lot better
( Isabela <> Aveline - from enemies to BFFs; Isabela <> Merril - big/little sister; Varric/Isabela <> everyone - comedy gold; Sebastian <> Fenris - total bros; Fenris <> Aveline - warrior friends; Hawke <> Carver/Bethany - sibling rivalry/love; etc.).
I also loved that they developed relationships with each other, in Origins the companions only existed and evolved around the warden.
So all in all , I think that Bioware did a really good job with the companions - listening to their conversations was probably my favorite part of the game.

The thing is, it felt unnatural. This is probably why the devs cut these while doing quests. Totally understandable.

It wouldn't be that hard to offer player-initiated dialogue anywhere and reserve NPC-initiated dialogue for camp/NPC's "home." Isn't that what we'd really like?

DA 2 has a MUCH more interesting Dwarf than DA 1. I don't know if I've ever been as annoyed with a Bioware party NPC as I am with Oghren (and I was so disappointed that HE was the only one in Awakenings).
I really liked Leliana and Alistair from DA 1, but I don't quite get all the Morrigan love (she was interesting to a point). I barely remember Sten. Shale was interesting to talk to, but I never took her with my party, and Zevran was very funny, IMO. Wynne was a good mage character, but for me just a little less forgettable than Sten.
Awakenings (only 1 playthrough) I liked Anders and (strangely) Velanna the best, so was glad to see Anders back for DA 2.
My first impression from what I've played in DA 2 is that Fenris will be, for me, completely forgettable (moreso than Sten). Anders, Bethany, Isabella and Varric look like good characters. Seb, I don't know - I only installed the DLC right before ending Act 1 and haven't interacted with him. Merrill is Aerie (almost). Aveline I'm not sure about (I'm a Warrior in DA 2, so I find myself not ever bringing her). And Carver - not sure - and not sure I'll really experience him as my next play through will be as Rogue, and I don't know if I'll do a Mage character. But if Carver is like Carth or Kaiden, I think I'd prefer him dead (well, simply not in my game).
I think for me it depends on MY class, though, and what banters I get to hear. I was almost always Rogue in DA 1 (though also have a Warrior, but installed a mod that let you multi-class and took lockpicking skills), so I tended to take Alistair almost always (always chose him over Oghren or Sten) and then casters or Leliana for another ranged. In DA 2 I'm a Warrior so far, so am always taking Isabella or Varric, and then usually 2 of Anders, Merrill and Bethany (mages seem a bit strong!)

I know that's what I'd like. I like chatting about frivilous things while on the road, such as cheese, as much as I enjoy chatting about the "4serioz" stuff at home, like "help me free the mages"

DAO had wonderful characters - Morrigan, Lelian, Alistair, Zevrin were all wonderful. They felt so much more fleshed out than those in DA2. Heck, even the dog was a much better character in O than 2 - where he was some magic spell character who appeared out of nowhere. In Origins, he had a back story and all.

It would've been nice to at least talk to them in a sort of Origins style at their homes/hubs or at the Hanged Man.

I prefer the companions of DA2 over DAO as a group, the whole they have their own business is far more interesting than the clingy warden love fest.
Hehe, sums it up pretty well. Thinking about it now though, Awakening's were an improvement on DAO's. Loved Anders and Nathaniel, Justice and Elven Morrigan were interesting, Sigrun I had to kill when she turned on me. I don't miss her. And Oghren is just unbearable... while I don't like every DA2 companion, they're all very well written.

But i guess there is one pro here: I usually get too sucked into the story like in Origins when Morrigan left my ass i was bummed out the whole day lol.

The characters I find most annoying are Velanna, Oghren, Wynne, Carver and Alistair.
When it comes to DLC characters I prefered Sebastian to Shale. And I really liked Sketch.
