I have looked high and low for a solution to this problem, and have found no results yet. A total of 3 threads exist in random forums with no responses on a fix, so appologies if it's been solved before but I'm tired of looking. I copied the guide to posting a problem from the stickied thread:

2.  System Details

  a. Intel i7 930, 2.4Ghz, 6Gb DDR3-1600 Corsair Dominator

  b. ATI HD5870, 1Gb VRAM, default clocks, driver version previous 11.4, now 11.7 (same resulsts)
  c. Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music, driver 6.0.1.1375 (latest available from Creative's site)

  d. Windows 7 x-64 Home Premium SP1

  e. Direct X11

3.  Problem Details

  a.  Me :P

  b.  What? Extremely bright muzzle flashes from every weapon, increasing in brightness and size when zoomed. It's gamebreaking, I can't play with them the way they are

  c.  When?  All the time, right away as soon as I'm off the shuttle for the first mission

  d.  Where? Everywhere AFAIK

  e.  Why? I'd like to find out :P

I've enclosed links to a screenshot as well, which I find are the most helpful tools when troubleshooting graphical problems: steamcommunity.com/id/Un34rth/screenshot/559789467981812136

Further info, I'm basically running 1920x1080, I've toggled Vsync, AA, film grain, and DoF all to no avail. I think that just about covers everything. If there is a toggle for muzzle flash in the engine files I can simple disable as a workaround, that'd be fine as well. I simply want to play! Thanks in advance.

That's strange. I have a similar GPU (the somwehat slower 6870), I'm also on Windows 7 64-bit and I also have driver 11.7 installed. Did you install the DirectX 9 you find on the Mass Effect disc? Also, what (patch) version of the game are you running?

It's the Steam version, as stated in the title, so it does it's own thing when it installs. I will be posting there as well if I can't get a resolution here. I'm assuming it has something to do with the lens flare option but according to TweakGuides it doesn't affect anything when you disable them.

All I can really suggest, is open up the bioengine.ini file, and change lensflare=false. Not sure about the Steam version, but it can normally be found under;
My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Config

Also, its a better idea to use Notepad ++ to open and modify it, as sometimes Windows Notepad can do horrible things to its formatting.

Yeah toggling lens flare didn't seem to have an effect. It's rather frustrating to buy a game, a fairly recent one at that (2008) and have such problems. I'll keep tinkering and if I find a solution I'll be sure to post back.

The only other thing I can think of is something relating to your video driver, as the muzzle flash should not be that prominent.

I know this is a very old thread, but I'm gonna bump it in the hope that someday someone will have this problem and be the wizkid who figures it out and coincidentally stumbles across these words, just maybe that day is nigh.

Sadly it's as the OP statet, the number of people having this issue seems to be very small. I'm actually fairly certain that I'm responsible for one of those 3 threads he found. The really funny thing is that I had this problem about 3 years ago and couldn't find a solution, then again last year, but with a completely new rig. I'm only being reminded of it again, because the basic issue, at least in my case, isn't limited to ME1. For me lights in general are very bright in all 3 Mass Effect games. It's just that in part 2 and 3 the muzzle flashes are either not affected or it's not as bad as in part 1, where firing any weapon was simply unbearable, because the flash would cover the whole screen with a light so intense that I began to feel the urge to walk towards it. I actually had to give myself that superweapon one-shot thingy, so I could at least enjoy the story. But playing any weapon based class and hoping for a challenge was out of the question.

The problem I'm having now in ME3 is the light of the mass effect relays you get to see basically every time you use a relay. It's not a game-breaker, don't get me wrong, but imo it shows that the issue is still there in some way.

Last year, when I made the discovery that it was highly unlikely to be a hardware issue, since noone can be that unlucky, I startet to consider other possible causes. But calling an electrician and having him check if everything's running as it should be would have been borderline insane, so I gave up and decided to accept with serenity the things I cannot change.

Nevertheless ... if anyone has found a solution to this issue in the meantime, please share your wisdom.

For ME 3 issues, discuss at Mass Effect 3 PC Technical Support not in the ME 1 or 2 forums.
