Which one should a Soldier Shepard use, and which one should my squad members use for maximum damage and effectiveness?

It really amounts to more of a preference choice. In terms of raw damage the GPS has a higher output and works relatively well with the Soldier. Frankly, the only class it struggles on is the Vanguard, which is amusingly ironic. Definitely give the GPS to your squad as they hardly fire shotguns and it will at least allow them to take down shields efficiently.

I've wondered about this but for other classes, the caster ones specially.

Recently, I've tried companions with the Eviscerator, it wasn't too bad. But, the main problem is with how companions fire at range with shotguns, and the spread of the pellets, so the GPS edges out the Eviscerator in this regard.

Their main difference is with ammo power activation, since each pellet makes an individual ammo power call, the Eviscerator can be more handy with Squad Cryo for example.

And for anyone that does not have the GPS, the Eviscerator is better for companions then the other shotguns, because of the range and ironically the 3 shot clip size.

And I've like Grunt with the Claymore over the GPS, so he'd be the one exception.

So far, everyone, including Shepard, who can use a shotgun is using the Geth Pulse Rifle, except Grunt, who is using a Claymore. Should I keep it like that?

One advantage the GPS does give, is tracking rounds. You fire, enemy moves, and the rounds will curve a bit to try and hit your target.

The main problem vanguard players have with the GPS is the firing mechanics. All other shotguns are fired when the button gets pushed. GPS is fired when the button gets released. Its not that noticeable with the other classes, but due to the pace at which tha vanguard is played, those milliseconds make all the difference in the world.
Determination and practice, you can get around it, although I still havent mastered it on Insanity yet. Just finished a Veteran playthrough with it, now using it exlusively in a Hardcore, and will try Insanity once I finish, and hopefully will have mastered the firing technique.

I've been playing a shotgun soldier lately. I use the Evi all thru the first part of the game, and try to optimize weapon damage ( Max Miranda's passive for 15% weapon damage, use armor pieces for weapon damage, select commando passive ) to get the ammo effect - taking either Jacob or Grunt for squad incendary. Its very effective on Insanity. The geth shotgun - I don't perfer it, played vanguard too much and just what Bigsnot1 said its the firing mechanics that make it a problem.

maybe im the exception, but i like using GPS for my vanguard, very flexible gameplay style, works well at mid/close even long range, not like always charging and aim for one shot kill. good for mid range disabling shields and pull out combos, charge b4 chargin into a powerful enemy, i also discover when there's a group of enemies coming out of a single entrance, shooting at long range can block em coming out and kill them effectively since the pellets spread out more widely and cover the entrance.

soldier +hightened AR + commando +disruptor ammo (heavy?) can make one shot kill at closer range.and i always like giving gps to my squad

Squadmates are dramatically better with the GPS over other shotguns. Other than with Grunt, there's really little reason to give SG squaddies anything else. Grunt to me is an exception b/c he can take a Mattock, so he might as well take advantage of the stronger Claymore shot in close range (since the AI doesn't charge GPS shots).

For yourself just take whatever shotgun you like most. I wouldn't like the GPS for my Vanguard, but I think there are some who do well with it.

I guess it depends on if ammo power activation matters or not. So, if you are going to be using squad cryo for example, the eight pellets of the Eviscerator is going to be better than the three pellets of the GPS to freeze enemies on one shot, for both you and the Squad.

Otherwise the GPS is going to provide a higher DPS for the squad and you can charge the shots with Shepard.

So as Bourne Endeavor said, it's really up you what you like better, and how you want to use the shotguns.

I would use the GPS in your situation. Although it kind of sucks with ammo powers. Charge it up and then heightened adrenaline rush =dead enemy with or without ammo powers however. On a Vanguard I would never touch it because of it's lack of proccing ammo powers consistently.

For squad, GPS is best and on Grunt I would use the Claymore since he can survive in the cqc required to get the most out of the Claymore.

I'd have to disagree with you there. I finished my insanity playthrough as a Vanguard who only used the GPS and had no problem whatsoever. It helps if you know that you can charge up the shotgun, use Biotic Charge, and then it's fully charged when you hit the target.

I think I'll use the Geth Pulse Rifle for everyone but Grunt.

Currently playing a GPS Vanguard. Always thought this combination was awful - turns out it's actually great. Not quite as good as the Claymore, but comparable to the Scimitar. A couple of points:

(1) It favors Pull Field over Squad Cryo Ammo, because it can strip shields like no other weapon can, but is not as great with ammo powers as the other Shotguns;

(2) The overcharge feature is *only* meant to be used at the beginning of a skirmish, to allow you to quickly murder a high level enemy immediately after the first Charge;

(3) You need to lead your shots at mid range, by which I mean between 1m and 5m. Yes, you heard it correctly. You need to lead your shotgun shots with this weapon. Do it correctly and it will kill shielded enemies faster than the Reload Trick Claymore.

(4) At melee range, try your best to melee stagger your enemy before firing. It helps a lot to land your shots.

(5) Because it has fantastic Shield piercing but is mediocre against Armor, you need a backup Armor piercing weapon, such as the Viper or the Mattock. Put Inferno Ammo on both the GPS and the backup weapon, and use the latter against highly Armored enemies (Krogan, Scion, etc.).

The GPS Vanguard is actually quite powerful, comparable to a Claymore, Scimitar, or Mattock Vanguard. It also offers a unique playstyle that borrows a lot from the Shotgun Adept and the GPS Infiltrator.

Last but not least, the gun is sleek and gorgeous. That's reason enough for me to use it.

I'm surprised that the GPS isn't getting more love. After Charging most enemies can be killed with one shot and a quick melee, or one headshot. It also has ridiculous range for a shotgun and is a viable mid-range weapon in most scenarios.

Admittedly I haven't tried a lot of different shotguns besides the GPS, but I have used most of them at different points and never came away as impressed as I did with the GPS. Am I missing something here?

Go with GPS. With that you'll strip shields off tough enemies.

I made a video to show the ammo effect with the evi, its the first part of Horizon, on insanity xbox.  I used the evi straight through, only switched to vindicator when I ran out of ammo at the end of this clip.

For Shepard - Well, they are both good.  When I go with sniper soldier, I prefer the GPS and use it as a shield stripper as others have noted in this thread.  If you want to go with a shotgun heavy soldier  ( taking the claymore on collector ship ) then the Evi is the same playstyle you would use with the claymore.  I made some vids of claymore soldier on CST

Squad - like everyone else I give the Geth Shotgun to Jacob, Jack and Tali ( Grunt uses either Mattock or Claymore ).

I give everyone in my squad the GPS, except Grunt, who has the Claymore.  The weapons I use now are the Revenant, Viper, Predator, and any heavy weapon?  Which shotgun would go best with this weapons combo?

The couple of times I took the Revenant it removed the need for a shotgun - meaning that I had to get up close to use the Revenant just like you do to use the Claymore. So I would go with the Geth Shotgun and use it for stripping shields on YiMR mechs and barriers on collectors at range. There has got to be a thread around here with videos of Soldier using Revenant - I know Sinosleep posted one with the Revenant going up against the Shadow Broker's Goon squad.

Edit: found it.
