If EA took Bioware just because of TOR and nothing else, then it's a stupid move and is clearly at fault, more at fault than Bioware will be.

They certainly didn't pay all that money because they thought the ME and DA properties were going to recoup that investment.  Neither IP sells nearly enough units to even come close to making a profit in that deal.

I agree with the "as TOR goes so goes BW" remark.  If TOR flops BW will be saying hello to Origin, Westwood, and all the other dev houses EA has dismantled over the years.

This vid gives my response adequately to the idea of a Mass Effect MMO:

Link

If they want to make one, that's fine as long as it doesn't address any story lines.  I'll wait for the next single player TPS/RPG of the franchise.

TOR just scored some points with me. Ever since WoW, MMORPGs have been trying way too hard to cater to the single-player experience, which is just absurd given the entire concept of "massively multiplayer" game.

I hope to god they never do a MMO in the ME universe no company who has ever promised to remove the grinding involved in MMOs has ever delivered.

Why not? You should try it, it's nice. Cool in the summer, nice and insulated in the winter. And people tend to stay away if occasionally moan loudly and rattle a chain on bare concrete floor.

Indeed. One need only look at how EA have recently handled Warhammer. The game is on life support with a team of as few people as possible supporting it. Should TOR flop (and it's a strong possibility) Bioware will be downsized in the same way. ME3 will have been completed by then, and Dragon Age...well, we see how much EA are concerned with that IP.

One reason which to some extent StellarMagic pointed out would be that with a ME based MMO, Bioware would have all the rights to it and could do what they wanted with it, whilst with the SWTOR one they will ALWAYS have to runby every decision they intend to make past LucasArts.

People gave SOE a load of stick for how SWG went but it wasn't totally SOEs fault, some of it lies squarely at the foot of LucasArts. In fact I think some people actually now lay most of the blame at LucasArts feet because all of the decisions made would have had to be passed through them before they were implemented and I wouldn't bet on some of those changes being done as commanded by LucasArts to try and compete with WoW when it first came on the scene and caused SWG to lose some subscribers. The funny thing is, the change backfired on SOE/LA because it caused even more subscribers to leave.

Besides, it'd take at least a few years (most likely more) before we were to see an ME MMO even if Bioware had started work on it now. Look at how long SW:TOR has been in development.

Missed those posts. Good point. Hope it will go this way and we will see ME MMO at some point.

I would love an mmo of Mass Effect. In fact, there's a section in the ME2 credits that lists an mmo team, if I'm not mistaken. With the amount of money that mmo's can make, and the sheer size of the mmo community, it would be ludicrous for any company not to try and tap into that demographic.

I know some people are anti-mmo because you cannot convey a decent single player experience (i.e. dialogue, choice, etc.) and I can tentatively agree there. I've played a number of mmo's, but only WoW kept me for longer than the trial period. And for all of those games, I would have to agree with there being that lack of a single player experience. That said, I have not played the Old Republic, and everything I'm seeing in regards to that game seems to be that they're trying to bring choice, story, and dialogue into an mmo.

So depending on how the Old Republic is going to turn out.. I'm down for an mmo. I think what the majority of gamers want, is the ability to play with others cooperatively, and show off their own character, while also having that epic story line. The mmo genre is the best candidate to accomplish that. In a limited/small scale, borderlands also did a good job. Remains to be seen if BW can accomplish that or not. I'm hoping for yes, but we'll see.

A conversation in another thread led me to some possible inspiration for how the ME MMO could be implemented.

I am following Dust 514, which is supposed to be FPS combat that ties into EvE's universe. This is a unique concept of tying together two games of very different genres so that they interact. I could see potential in doing this with an ME MMO.

The initial MMO could be primarily ground-based and similar in gameplay to the current ME games, and then release a second stand-alone game to cover the space exploration and combat aspect. Clans/whatever could have some people more dedicated to one aspect or another, depending on skills and inclination, and we could always include some PvE aspects like pirates to fill in the downtime between invading other Clans' areas.

The Third Person Shooter game could be set up so that players are essentially mercenaries that can work for groups like Elanus Risk Control Services, the Blue Suns, or Eclipse. Missions could include things like securing a ship from pirates, clearing out a mine of Husks, or retrieving Reaper salvage.

The Clans/Companies could secure certain worlds/colonies for themselves to receive a continuous income, and use NPC shuttle services in order to move between worlds.

Once the space-centered game was introduced, Companies could provide for their own transport and orbital support, or contract another Company to do so.

I would like to see one that takes place right after humans discover the mass relay. before shepards story. I really want it to be open world sandboxish not a wow clone at all. Shooter based combat and roles that dont require combat abilities >_> i wanna be a Krogan bartender

The awesome part of SWG pre-NGE is that you could have characters that were entirely social roles. No bartenders sadly, but you could be dancer or musician. Even specialize in the ability to alter other characters' hairstyles and physical appearance, with special designs only available via the profession.

Your player organization could build a city and a cantina for you to provide your services, which were socially integrated with the other combat classes whom you could buff and heal certain types of debuffs, etc.

It was brilliant. Never been anything else much like it. And the crafting was amazing. Now that I think of it, there was a merchant class. And a food/drink crafting line. Given the free-form class building system, your character could have taken merchant and food crafting skills, and then run his own brewery selling your very own creations, out of a cantina built by your city's own architects.

SWG was too ahead of its time. It came out before social networking really exploded. I think the next big MMO will definitely draw heavily from SWG, and include very strong social/community aspects.

I agree with this line of thinking. If a Mass Effect MMO were created that was just another grindfest with different skins, then I would't play it. I never played SWG, but the concept of it sounds interesting and has great potential.

And if I can't play as a geth I probably won't be interested. :bandit:

i sadly dont like MMO games. they need too much of my time to do something "decent" with gear and leveling.
and i also hate digital socializing inside MMO games.

ive never played an mmorpg but the idea fascinates me. id love to see a social or multiplayer game set in the mass effect universe assuming shepards not involved [ie: not ME3]

fleshing out ideas turns into a wall of text tho, very difficult to condense all the elements of a mmorpg into a reasonable forum post without cutting a lot of corners. gonna think about this one
