Can a Shepard who goes Paragon/Renegade 50%-50% split (or so) get them to compromise?

possibly..though I've always been one-sided.I would expect so (renegade fro Miranda/Jack and paragon for Tali/Legion)
if you max your class skill getting the bonus to persuade then it's definitely doable
(an approximately 80%paragon/20%renegade Shepard with the 100% bonus could choose both paragon and renegade options in Miranda/Jack...though I may be wrong with the percentages...)

Actually, it does not matter how full the bars are.

I meant as a percentage so far rather than close to the end (which makes it more approximate) so 80/20 means 4times as much for one than for the other...though I accept it's more complicated than that
..of course I have only played with Shepards imported from ME1 which is a factor..

You can be kind of paragade but you need to have just a bit more points in one or the other
