Well, Duncan had to go to Ostagar and he had to be hurry, I assume. He could just go out of Orzammar's Hall of Heroes, couldn't he? I don't see any reason for Duncan's being in the Deep Roads.

Shortcut to somewhere near Ostagar possibly. If you do not participate in the proving but instead watch and ask the training master for news he will speak of a Carta thug (Brosca most likely) disrupting a proving a week or so earlier, it might be possible that Duncan dallied overlong in Orzammar seeking new candidates or dwarven military aid and needed a less circuitous path to the wilds.

Or he might be doing a favour for Harrowmont, old king Endrin or even Bhelen. Dwarven support is very important to the wardens I should think.

I doubt that there is any shortcut at the Deep Roads which would be shorter than Imperial Way. Evil darkspawns, evil deep stalkers, evil spiders, evil nugs possibly...  No, no way :)

But your idea about Duncan's interest to dwarven politics is reasonable. Could he know about Aeducan's exile? Could he wait for Aeducan?

Loghain and party used the deep roads to reach Gwaren quickly in the stolen throne, and Duncan has been down below before in the calling.

But Maric used this way because he had no better alternative.

It's been awhile since I've read TST but I got the idea that they used the Deep Roads to stay hidden instead of for fast travel. I mean, they were kind of lost.

Or they could be scouting out the archdemons location, or maybe they're sending an unseen colleague off on his calling, or chasing rumours of the architect, or recovering old grey warden caches from an overtaken thaig or they could just be sat around drinking vodka, eating spuds and singing plough 'em all. Dozens of possible explanations really.

He was going for a tryst with the broodmother.

Well why Duncan was in Orzamaar is because he was looking for recruits on his way to Ostagar (The threat at Ostagar is mostly contained keep in mind at that point in the game, Cailen and the armies there are doing well)

For the Dwarf Noble specific Origin, I remeber it you dont come back out through Orzamaar and Duncan had a few other Wardens with him. So its very possible they were either looking for something or useing the deep roads to get to somewhere else. (Remeber theres alot of entrances and exits to the deep roads. Its not a dwarvern city exclusive thing. Hell theres access to the deep roads in the cave in the Dalish origin)

One other possibility is that Duncan (and the other Grey Wardens in that scene) were escorting an older Grey Warden to his Calling, and were on the way back to the surface when they ran into the Dwarf Noble.

Duncan is wherever he needs to be to rescue the potential Warden from his untimely end per Origin. It is my understanding that all the events of the Origins happen at the same time.

And that everything more-or-less happens whether the Warden is from that origin or not.
