HI,
I just installed mass effect 1 on a new system with win 7 ultimate (64 bit) but evertime I try to start the game or the configuration file, the games crashes.
I have tried setting compatability to XP. but still same crash.
Is there any update or something to the game that could fix this?

ME1 is able to run on Windows 7. The chronological age of any PC is totally meaningless. Only the quality of the hardware components and proper care selecting the software for concurrent operation matter.
If you ignored the back of the game box, this is what the warning told you:
Minimum System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC
(Corrected from dumb, Pie in the Sky lies to the real thing)
Operating System:
Windows XP or Vista
Processor:
2.4+GHZ Intel or 2.0+GHZ AMD
Memory:
1 Gigabyte Ram (XP)
2 Gigabyte Ram (Vista)
Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce 6 series (6800GT or better: 210, 310, 520, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 7600 GS, 8200, 8300, 8400 GS, 8500, 9100, 9200, & 9300 are below minimum system requirements)
ATI Radeon X1650 XT or better (X1050, X1300, X1300 Pro, *X1550*, HD 2400, HD 3100, HD 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4250, HD 4270, HD 4350, HD 4550, and (probably) HD 5450 are below minimum system requirements)
Hard Drive Space:
12 Gigabytes
Sound Card:
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card and drivers
If you understand the above, and are certain your PC passed, then read the stickied guide to problem reporting and follow those instructions.

Did you patch your ME1 game to 1.02? If you haven't, you will need to install the patch from this link: http://masseffect.bi...ates/index.html

Maybe. There are countless of possible causes. Help us narrow it down to one by posting your system specs.OEH wrote...

Dimes to Doughnuts, the OP ignored the box label until he / she was told about it, and is still another scammed buyer who wanted something new and got something junk from carelessness while shopping.
(It's been 24 hours now, and if he / she was going to return, he is overdue as I add this edit, and so I doubt we will hear anything further on this.)

OEH - One other option is that the User Account Control feature of Windows 7 is causing the game to crash. This has occurred with other games and programs that it does not recognize as having the authority to make changes on your system or connect to the internet.
