Obsession

First spotted it was was a bit too much with NWN2, but the Dragon Ages are popping into my head in all sorts of inappropriate places.
I am convinced it's the way they deal with companions, how important they are emotionally, not just the romancing (that's extra obsessive) but how much their histories and lives matter to you.
They really tweak your emotions, so before their next game I am going to clear my head of all difficult stuff like ill parents, dying cats, homeless friends, footy, politics, destruction of the planet, and just immerse myself.
Thanks for listening, I'll get back to my Sunday gardening now ..... Anders is helping me pot out some herbs

That made me laugh really hard for some reason.
In reply to OP; I was arguing with my boyfriend a while back and called him Anders by mistake...

Actually, he more just shook his head and gave up. I think that counts as a victory on my part.

When she mentioned gardening, I was thinking of the herbalist in Awakenings that didn't care for Wynne, actually. The one who got grumpy about how much Wynne was full of herself, so that light of the Fade came out of Wynne's ass. ...
But the OP is right; Bioware characters do stick with you after you finish playing the game. And that's something I don't get from other developer's games.

I meant Anders would be there with me, who care if he's gardening or not ;-)

I really enjoy the Elder Scrolls and play them though with various mods again and again, the rarly worm their way into my thoughts unless I'm playing; Div Div Eco Draconis was absorbing (especially the ending); the Witcher too, but although I fancied Geralt he never hung around in my head.
Bioware do something far more compelling.

Agreed. If we could have the Oblivion (or Skyrim) world, with BioWare companion interactions, that would be awesome...however, I think my own companion interactions IRL would suffer, as I probably wouldn't leave the couch much.

It's because they fight alongside you to the death AND pour their heart out later in camp/spaceship. I remember one time I was nearly overrun by skeletons at Soldier's Peak. Everyone was down. All that was left was archer Leliana. She had nothing left, no stamina, no potions, nothing, just hacking away at the last two skeletons with her bow. Then came that voice-over when she's praying for her life... Oh Andraste...
and then she did it. Just before the last of her blood left her, she destroyed the last skeleton.
We went back to camp. I went to thank her (not that I expected that they would have VO for that; I just thought my character would want to do that) and she wanted to talk about the stars. I was so happy, my head just about exploded at that moment.
And then later, she would sometimes tell me "for you... anything!" when I would ask her something.
Memorable? Are you kidding me? Even a year later I still think about that moment.
This stuff feels REAL. And I am probably a very lame person for admitting it, but there you go. Go ahead, make fun of me.

I'm still haunted by something Alistair said, and every time I hear a belch I think it's not as good as Oghren's

daftly, in Bioware land I do miss being able to run up houses and jump off them
got to be glad that my man plays these games with me so I can talk to someone about them, none of my other real life friends play the same games I do, some don't even play computer games

I have loved Bioware myself since JE and then played all their other RPG's, they are the best game storytellers that allow interaction imho and I look forward to playing their games for many years to come.

well first off KOTOR 2 and NWN 2 were not made by Bioware, although compelling stories in themselves they came nowhere near Bioware's calibre.

Aye, their writing always gets me deep into the story some how. Even Dragon Age 2 has it's strong points. While the 3rd act could have been better. I have never been hit so hard emotionally as I was in my play through. It's possible it was needless but it was brilliant on their part. I'm also looking forward to swtor just because I want to see what an mmorpg that is written by Bioware is like.

Me and my boyfriend went through a period where we would actually bring two TVs down into his basement, set them up side by side with his Xbox and my PS3, and both play Oblivion at the same time. It was awesome.

It was the first game I'd ever played that had me completely sucked in. The world, the twist, the characters, the music. Oh dear Lord, the music. I actually tended to just start it up and leave the main menu open, just so I could listen to the accompanying theme. ~<3

This is exactly why I can't for the life of me play it more than half an hour consecutively.
Well. That, and their Character Creation system.

finished the rerun, snogged Fenris
but what do we do now ?
Chat with spouse. Decided on his wants not mine ...
so we're playing Origins again, with an elf mage will romance Zev and Leliana, but won't romance Alistair or put him on the throne
the mage start is interesting when you know what's to come in DA2, they don't appear to be happy and there's rebellious chat, suicidal chat etc and you meet a young ginger topped Cullen
thanks for listening

Spouse isn't obsessed with the characters in games, and I wasn't until DA came along (damn you Bioware), but the game drags him into reveries and non-sequiturs at startling moments

It's a lot of fun when a fictional character draws you in enough to care about them. This applies to games, movies, books, whatever. A lot of people like to brag about how they are capable of remaining disinterested in characters. Often, they say that the writing just isn't that good, implying that their tastes are more sophisticated than those of the uneducated masses or gullible fangirls/boys. And yeah, there's writing out there (not necessarily in DA2) that really is bad. More often, the problem is that the reader/player just isn't in the right mindset to enjoy it. Of course, there are some people that just lack the necessary empathy. Not much you can do about that.

Fenris and Merrill in particulear doesn't matter much to the story aside from their own and the ending where you choose side, they could have had some bigger roles too.
I also like that some of them are kept optional so those that do not like the characters can avoid them, there isn't anything as irritating as having a idiot forced on you.
While DA:2 isn't as good a game as DA:O i am still glad I've gotten it, and it's great that Anders and Aveline, hell even Sebastian a DLC, can be tied into the story in that way.
Anders/Justice was a great turn of events for those of us that played awakening, either you hate, love or love to hate it.

I like the writing, and I'm not one to brag. I suppose the best way to put it is,I do lack the empathy. I may not understand it myself, but I do have freinds who are 'obsessed' and thats fine. TBH the whole issue makes me scratch my head and go eh?
