I'm still debating between starting ME3 with my "favorite" Shepard (who I designed after my own personality, where I try to make the choices that I would actually make in given situations) and my "eff this" Shepard (who was my second ME1 character, first ME2 playthrough basically for exploring the game and not caring if I make a "wrong" decision or screw things up).

Second character I ever created, so I have an idea of what's going on for my primary character who I usually use for insanity runs.

Female Infiltrator
ME1: Saved Feros Colony and Shiala, Spared the Rachni Queen, Romanced Liara, Sacrificed Ash, convinced Saren to kill himself, saved Council, Installed Anderson as Council member.

ME:2: All Loyalty missions completed paragon style apart from Garrus who killed his ex buddy and Zaeed sacrificing the foundry workers to Kill Vedo. Cerberus data was sent to the alliance, Garrus romanced, Crew lost to Reaper goop apart from Chakwas, Collector Base destroyed.

This character is, for all purposes, a screw up shield for all my favourite characters.

Seems like everyone has basically the same save file where nothing bad happens.

The question was about the first play trough, the "role-playing" part comes next. And I don't know about the others, but my save is 90% paragon in ME1, and 85% renegade in ME2, that are a lot of questionable decisions on the lesser scale.
Importing a save where not everyones survives cuts one form the content in ME3 - I want to know how the stories of my squad mates end, I'm sure the others do to.
And people who rewrote geth or kept the geonphage data and so on did not necessary do it with benevolent ending in mind...
