Can't make a custom avatar

I used the blog tutorial on how to make a custom avatar, but every time I replace the default DAO character potrait with the new one, it never appears on the site. My game list says I have 0 characters, and the avatar does not show up on the Dragon Age Characters panel. Does anyone know what to do?
