Thane and Kaidan are both older than Shepard (and Thane's character development, especially if you romance him, is similar to Prothy's). And yes, Wrex's alignment is indeed changed thanks to Shep--when we meet him in ME1, he's a mercenary that has given up hope that his people will ever get their sh*t together. Now, had he not been to Virmire, had he not had a hand in Sovereign's defeat, do you think he would have ever gone back to Tuchanka?
Note that if you don't recruit him, you don't meet him in ME2.
As for the last part, hey, whatever floats your boat. Me? I'm a fan of redemption stories, of finding a reason to live in a dark universe with no real purpose, of finding a reason for hope in the face of inevitable death. It's part and parcel of the "optimistic atheist" thing I've got going--it's nice to see it reflected in a videogame.
I also like the odd couple, and in my headcanon, everyone on my squad will one day be best bros with everyone else.
Thankfully, you can totally do the other path and get the fate you want. That's the lovely thing about Mass Effect, and I must say your preferred ending is just as appealing.
EDIT: GOD DAMN IT WOMAN STOP EDITING YOUR POSTS I CAN'T KEEP UP WITH ALL THE NEW POINTS.
Kaidan can only be changed if you romance him (which to me is enough of a reason for his alignment to be changed) and it doesn't stick either. (hello Me2) Same with Ash.
Wrex alignment wasn't changed. He's still renegade. He just didn't give up hope on his people. (Which he clearly never did since he was in such a hurry to cure them in the first place. He just needed a trigger to help him realize that (Virmire was said trigger).)
Probably because the devs couldn't be bothered writing alternate dialogue (I mean for the love of pete Garrus defaults to old times dialogue regardless of whether you recruited him or not.)
Eh I like redemptions stories just fine. I don't like them when they feel well to me lackluster. And that's how the ending feels to me. Very lackluster.
Well in my HC some of them like each other and others would be all to happy to shove a knife in each other ribs the second Shep looked away. I'm not fond of the "one big family" trope. Because hell even in families some members hate each other.
Except it's not the fate I want. He dies sure but not for the reasons I'd prefer (and not in the situation I'd prefer either). I want him to go out fighting. Not deciding after all is said and done it's time for him to kick the bucket. That strikes me as ridculous as Tali's jumping off a damn cliff. A true renegade takes down as many enemies as possible before he kicks the bucket. And there will always be enemies threatening organics. Hell hunting down the remaining indoctrinated threats and such and being taken out by a large group of them would've sufficed.
Then again I have a thing against what I consider throwaway deaths.
