It appears that this is the case when you first find him, only Liara and Shep can understand him. This could change, naturally.

EDIT: Yes, it's Prothy. His repeated use of the lady's room is appparently a running joke.
I think that sealed the deal for me. I like him now, suspension of disbelief be damned.

From his dialogues in the leaked script it seems that the "Prothean" termsn refert to a number of species.

I mean that in the past the Protheans were like that. There is only one living Prothean, or so I've understood.
You'll find all the dialogue about the Prothean in one of the previous pages (16 or 17, I don't remember).

I actually believe that what we saw was their armor. Protheans seemingly had this organic technology thing going on with the beacons and what not. And from a lore perspective, Shepard's Collector Armor kind of partially supports it.Someone With Mass wrote...

Could explain why there is a significant physical difference between Ilos protheans and the description of Prothy in the script.
