The Romance DLC Survey ends today at 3pm EST. Yesterday we were sitting at whopping 7,500 responses! We're trying to get as close to 10K as we can!
If you haven't yet taken it, and are interested, PLEASE pop over there and take the survey (see link in my sig). It will only take 5 minutes of your time...unless you like to make comments.
Results will be analyzed statistically, summarized into a report, and sent to Bioware. If you want to be heard on this issue, this is the best way to do it!
Please take the survey and spread the word: https://www.surveymo...omancedlcsurvey
This will be my last spam of your thread. Thanks for being tolerant! <3

Very nice, but not sure why he's always depicted with carapace.
Because Protheans and Collectors are insectoid. I'm not letting that go.<_<

The Collectors are insectoid, yes, but the protheans are not. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, in the canon material that suggests they are even remotely insectoid. He has skin with hair follicles like other mammals, prominent lips (which is unique to mammals), mammalian eyes, nails,BlakStrakt wrote...

All of his alleged insectoid traits comes from fan art and nowhere else.
EDIT: As for the "shell" on his head - this is most likely leathery, similar to the shell of armadillos.

You're joking. You cannot acknowlege the Collectors as insect-like without acknowleging the Protheans too. That's like saying that Gorillas are primates but Humans aren't. And where the hell did you see any follicles on him? Pores? Yes. Follicles? Ha. He'd need y'know, HAIR for that. If you see any hair on him, it has to be from fan art. Speaking of which, fan art is a freaking terrible way to judge a character's appearance on. 60% of fan art usually spits in the face of established lore. 98% when Tali is the subject. That said The only Mass Effect fan art I ever look at is what gets posted here on the BSN. Now, if his carapace actually were leathery in consistency, we would actually see the damned thing move when he would change his facial expression, which absolutely never happened. It also seems multi-layered in a form that skin cannot mimmick. Also, nails and and endo skeleton cannot be either proven or disproven, so don't bother trying to argue either way on those. Although he wouldn't need one because he HAS A CARAPACE.

Considering Collectors only have 4% prothean DNA left in them and EDI outright says that genetically and anatomically, they're no longer protheans, I don't really know what you're going for here.BlakStrakt wrote...

The Reapers obviously wanted them to have insect traits. It doesn't mean anything as far as pure protheans are concerned.
Collectors are not a species within the prothean taxa, they're cybernetic abominations twisted and modified artificially by the Reapers to suit their nightmarish purposes. If science allows us to artificially breed humans with gills, shark traits and lasers embedded in their heads, is it really feasible to presume that all humans are born with gills, shark traits and lasers embedded in their heads?BlakStrakt wrote...

No, of course not, that's a preposterous logical fallacy. The Collectors is not a real species created by millions of years of evolution. They're science experiments. Using them as any kind of standard for how protheans look like below the armor is complete and utter scientific bollocks.
Mammals like whales and dolphins have no hair, but they have hair follicles. And pores, now that you mention it, are unique to mammals, so you kind of shot your own argument in the foot just there.BlakStrakt wrote...

Having hair is not a requirement for having hair follicles. Hair follicles could very well be vestigial evolutionary traits from a time when protheans actually required hair. Same goes for the asari, who are most certainly mammals.BlakStrakt wrote...

Gee, isn't that exactly what you're doing?BlakStrakt wrote...
Speaking of which, fan art is a freaking terrible way to judge a character's appearance on.
So by that logic, about all insectoid/chitin/carapace/winged Javik fan art spits in the face of established lore, since the established lore suggests anything BUT insectoid traits for the protheans.BlakStrakt wrote...

Not if it is rigid, which it is. It's not much of a defensive shell if it's soft. Think armadillos or rhinos.BlakStrakt wrote...

That's because it's not skin, it's a leathery natural armor like the ones armadillos and rhinos are born with.BlakStrakt wrote...

Oh, but I can prove it, at least the part about the endo skeleton. You see, the reason why we don't run around with protective exo-skeletons is because they cease to be viable when the organism exceeds a certain size. This is because the weight of the organism becomes so heavy when above a certain size that the exo-skeleton actually collapses. Anything larger than a 2 month old puppy needs an endo-skeleton to support their weight. That's why there are no giant insects on Earth.BlakStrakt wrote...
Also, nails and and endo skeleton cannot be either proven or disproven, so don't bother trying to argue either way on those.
As for the nails, well... there are not enough hand shots to prove anything conclusively, but I can swear I've seen tiny little nails on his fingers at some point.
Disregarding the fact that your knowledge of the characteristics and limitations of different types of skeletons is obviously lacking, just let me present you with this little conondrum:BlakStrakt wrote...
Although he wouldn't need one because he HAS A CARAPACE.
If he has carapace, which is a very common type of natural defense among insects, why does he need the armor? Hmm? The Collectors sure as hell didn't use armor, and according to your logic there's some kind of irrefutable evolutionary link between the two that makes them nigh identical to each other.

His hand on his texture map:

His hand rendered in 3dsMax:

Erm...it does look like nails to me.
Fun and totally unrelated fact about Javik's head texture:
It seems there are actually two face textures in use, one is used when he wakes up from the stasis pod on Eden Prime, the other one is used throughout the rest of the game.
The former texture is more "vibrant" in it's colours than the other one. I have no idea why two different textures are used though.

Right or wrong, the truth is what it is, and truth says protheans are not insects. It's a dream-shattering revelation, yes, but let us not weep over broken dreams when we can build new ones - dreams of glorious mammal protheans who breed live young with endo-skeletons, skin, sweat glands, nails and leathery cranial shells.BlakStrakt wrote...
