Yeah, stating otherwise would be kind of a massive spoiler.

Pardon me. This is one is lost. Could you direct me to-
A hanar. I remember your kind when you were still minnows in the ocean.
The...'Enkindlers' -- that is what you call us?
(flabbergasted) This one... is unworthy! This one has seen the face of an Enkindler!
(as he goes) This one has basked in their glory… this one must spread the word!
A pity we did not teach them to speak better.
I'm sorry…are you really a Prothean?
I am.
Then if you lost the last war…what hope do we have?
For many, there may be no hope.
The Reapers killed trillions in my cycle. The odds of being among the living are remote.
If you are lucky, they will destroy you outright. You will avoid the fate of becoming a husk.
If you cannot fight, do not let them capture you. Death is a better outcome.
(devastated) It's over. It's all over.
I assumed they wanted to hear the truth.
There was no one around to tell my people. We wasted years on false hope.
This cycle has strange ideas about war.
It is better to fight with your eyes open, then your heart.
It is the way of life.
I will meet you back on the Normandy, Commander.
But you are still alive now. That alone is a miracle. And you still have the power to fight.
My people knew your kind when you were just infants. Turian, asari, hanar - there was potential in all of you.
Now you must seize that potential and become the weapon you were meant to be -- the weapon that tells the Reapers we are not machines!
We are *alive*. And we will fight back!
Thank you. That meant a lot.
Commander Shepard, it must be an honor to have a Prothean out there fighting with you.
The Commander is a capable warrior as well. For a human. Who once lived in caves.
Neither have you, Commander.
(to Prothean) Would you mind maybe...signing something? Just to prove I met you?
'P'? That's your name?
How many Protheans do you know?
Just you.
Then there will be no confusion.
Thank you, Commander. I have enjoyed my time here, walking among the..infants.
[a beat] If hope is a weapon in this cycle, then it is a weapon we must wield.
I will see you back on the Normandy.*spoiler*

I'm reading the script right now, and I'm not running across anything that states the Protheans were more than one race. Infact, its the opposite;
*spoiler*
We were the dominant race of our cycle. We were the rulers of the galaxy.
My studies indicated you were the only race engaged in space-travel at the time. I always found that curious.
We were one empire composed of many subjects. All eventually called themselves "Prothean".
They weren't given a choice.
Any could oppose us if they wished. And had they won, they would have ruled. Many tried. None succeeded.
I had no idea Protheans were so..severe.
It was by necessity. Very early we encountered the dangers posed by machine intelligence. They rebelled against us.
The machines' strength lies in their intelligence. We decided the only way to survive was to surpass their evolution with our own.
In time, we united all organic life within our empire. Every race contributed in the struggle against the machines.

In the war...I commanded a ship like this one. A loyal crew with many friends. It was captured, only I escaped.
Indoctrinated. The Reapers sent them against me. For years I was hunted by my own men.
Every encounter a reminder of my failure as a soldier.
Until the Battle of the Cronian Nebula. I had only my knife left…
I cornered my men and slit their throats one by one. I watched them bleed.
It was the day I understood: war is atrocity committed in the name of survival.
(quietly) It is a lesson I wish I had never learned.
They are dead. (darkly) Where I left them.

We heard only rumors.
They said our scientists were constructing a great machine which had the power to defeat the Reapers.
By that point the empire had been smashed into a million pieces. None of us knew what the others were doing.
(worried) Well if we don't finish it soon, the same will be true of us.
To discover the most primitive races of my time now rule the galaxy. The asari, the humans, the turians...
There's also the salarians.
(surprised) The lizard people evolved?
I believe they're amphibian.
(amused; to himself) They used to eat flies.

It is a memory totem -- the 'Echo Shard'. Passed from soldier to soldier, Prothean to Prothean. Each has added their memories to it.
To a time before the Reapers. It is all that is left of my people.
Imagine if everyone you knew was dead. You could not even remember their faces, or the color of the sky above your home.
The memories were gone...but so was the pain.
Would you still want to remember that, Commander? Even if it meant watching everyone die again?
(as if seeing it) Before the Reapers...the stars belonged to us. Civilization flourished...
Perhaps you are right. There were..others..soldiers who served under me, like your crew.
Shepard (I think):
Without that.."affection" as you put it, all I have in my life is death. And for me that's not enough.
I care about them, but the truth is they could die on any given day.
My crew has become my family. We've stared death in the face more times than I can count.
You go through something like that enough and...it binds you together in ways I can't really explain.
What about you? I respect your reasons for being here, but I still can't help but feel there's something more.
Any one of them could die on any given day...and they'd be gone just like that.
The only thing I know for certain is *everyone* dies if we don't win this war.
Which you seem to do quite well.
(senses an answer) What's in here?
How far back does it go?
And you don't want to remember that?
If I had something like this...seeing Earth again, whole, with everyone still alive…that would be worth the pain.
Re-opening old wounds -- especially one this big -- isn't going to help.
Yes, they matter most.
No. I'm here to kill Reapers.
