Ok as part of my quest to play through every possible variation of Legacy (mage Act 1, non-mage Act 1, etc.) I came across something weird.  If you do the quest in Act 1 your mother will mention that your father was an Enchanter with the Circle in Kirkwall performing for the Viscount (cause apparently they double as a circus) when they met.  However in the item pack DLC's you get a codex entry for the mage gear that mentions that Malcolm was a mercenary (working with or for the Red Iron I think).  So which one is it?  I'm more inclined to follow the Legacy story because that is an actual story DLC rather than an Item Pack but the Item Pack did come out first and somebody had to write those codex entries.  This is one thing I'm starting to dislike about Dragon Age the team seems to mess with the continuity at random.

Hmm, I haven't played legacy yet and don't remember the item pack description but why couldn't both versions be right? Mother meant father at the Viscount's ball and later while on the run he worked as a merc?

There's a few ways this could go: Malcolm was in the Circle, then escaped (possibly because of the Crimson Oars, then went to work off his debt to them), then met Leandra at the ball, and finally had to flee when he was caught using magic to defend the leader of the Oars. Or, Malcolm was a mercenary, got caught using magic to defend the leader of the Oars, was thrown in the Circle, and Ser Carver then helped him escape.

My point's mainly that they don't have to be mutually exclusive (and that I like thinking Malcolm was a mercenary; it gives me a reason to side with Meeran at the beginning).

Fugitive's Mantel says...
Malcolm Hawke ranged the breadth of the Free Marches as he ran from the templars who pursued him. He often posed as a mercenary, and his substantial martial skills easily secured him positions in different bands. On one assignment for the Crimson Oars he was sent to Kirkwall, the seat of templar power in the region. He had every intention of staying there briefly, but fate had other plans.

Malcolm's Bequest says...
In Kirkwall, Malcolm met Leandra and, despite all common sense, courted her. The few times Leandra managed to slip away from her family, Malcolm showed her a whole new world, something completely different from her cloistered existence. It was dangerous, forbidden, and she quickly fell madly in love with the dashing Malcolm Hawke. These stolen moments would end all too soon.

These would seem to eliminate the possibility of both stories being true.  I mean I could see Malcolm meeting Leandra, being captured, and thrown in the Circle then using the performance at the ball (mentioned later in Malcolm's Bequest Codex) to sneak in and run off with Leandra, but Leandra in Legacy makes it sound like the ball was their first meeting not their last.

Now I'm not so much bothered that they gave two different accounts as I am curious to know which is the most accurate.

Nowhere in that statement does it spell out what caused him to stay longer than briefly.  That statement could easily mean he was captured and thrown into the circle and it was only with the help of the Templar Carver he was able to escape.  So he was a merc, captured and thrown into the circle, met Liandra, and then escaped with her, no real issue there.

Unless I am missing something else.
