There was emotion involved. SOMEONE cared. These were very story heavy and I LOVED that.

In ME2, no one cared. You didn't speak to someone who said, "Please, go here and do this, I need you to do it, please."

What we got in ME2 was, "Probe launched. Oh look, I found something. Land, shoot everything that moves, leave. Email."

That SUCKS.

I want to have to talk to someone first. Hear the emotion in their voice as to why I have to do this. Give me a reason to CARE. Don't just drop me on a planet and tell me to do it. Make me WANT to do it.

ME1 succeeded there where ME2 completely and utterly failed.

ME3 better be in ME1's vein on that regard.

As for those moments you mentioned, like the ship shaking and the GET OUT on the husk assignment-

Forgettable to me. Why? Because there's nothing that makes me feel like I had to do either of those.

Give me the desire and the will to complete them. Then I'll never forget them.

To me, one of the main themes of ME2 is: "Doing the right thing even if no one aknowledges or rewards you for it."  Shepard is this outcast now, who will not recieve any medals for any of the work she's doing. Even clearing out the collector base will be something that no one will even know about, except folks with access to high level intel (like the STG).  It's a question of, will you still do the right thing, even if the universe despises you?  Being a hero, of course Shep will.

And you do get emails, and get to read datapads during the missions, to get the story and understand why it's important to kill these mercs, or clean out these geth, or destroy that horrible device that's making the husks. You even occasionally get an email of gratitude, thanking you for your actions. But I like the contrast between 1 & 2 - in 1 you are practically a god whom everyone loves and respects. In 2, you are the plaything of a cold and unfeeling universe. The darkness and lonliness of 2 isi going to make 3 all the more epic when you pull out a golden win.

Okay, there's a difference between loyalty and the N7 "assignments" which is what's being discussed.

ME1's were better; due to actual interesting stories and dialogue. There was actually dialogue between Squaddies and some enemies. And many were given by Hackett and had decisions that carried to ME2 (albeit small). What made ME1's annoying was simply the same old base designs over and over with them. That's what ME2 did right. But It's clear ME2's was on a tighter budget... there were a few with some choices but overall boring.

Given the war in ME3, hopefully the N7 assignments will be better.

1st time: If Shepard had known then he would have prepared in advance with countermeasure and that would have tipped off the collectors, thus Shepard would have not reached the information hub.

  • You could have said something.....
2nd time:  Reaper IFF was necessary

  • Could have called the Council to show them the damn Reaper.
3rd time: Necessary expirement to study the effects of Reapers on organics

  • Really? I thought you were just looking for an excuse to fry him. Silly me with my silly ideas.
4th time: Well we don't know yet do we.

  • They're shooting at us..... oh look, a mech.

Shall I continue?

I'm gonna eat a poop sammich now. /jk

But seriously, way to go. Making it sound mildly acceptable to me(no sarcasm, I swear).

Still, I would've preferred we SPOKE to people rather than READ things.

Especially since the things we read were usually AFTER we did the assignment, while in ME1 we needed to speak to people to even GET the assignment.

Hell, go back to ME1 and just find the assignments you can find without talking to someone about it first.

It feels so LAME. That's what ME2 assignments felt like to me. Finding them rather than getting them through the story.

GRR BIOWARE, GIVE ME WHAT I WANT. FEED ME. FEEEEEEEEED MEEEEEEEEE.

1. Shepard wouldn't have been dumb enough to infiltrate a collectors ship if he had known they were waiting to pounce on him.

2.Why bring the council, they wouldn't have acted and we would see them butt in and prevent them from going into the Omega 4 relay. Besides, Cerberus and the Council, not best buds.

3.It was convenient that Grayson was going to be tortured/die anyway, so might as well try out an experiment on a dead man walking.

4.We don't know the motives yet.

You're a lost case. Unlike you, I do question my orders. It's a miracle Shepards like you even make it through ME1.

I thought the same thing. It was more fun tracking down geth outposts and crazy people than just pushing a button in every single side quest with no input from your team mates.

Wow, seriously?  There are people who like ME1 sidequests better than ME2 sidequests?

ME1 sidequests are a complete snore fest. If the environments were more varied, they would maybe be OK... but going into that same mine or prefab building that I have been in hundreds of times before loses it's charm very quickly.  Also: Ugh, the Mako. So glad they got rid of that lemon.

Suggested shark name for whatever new ground vehicle they come up with for 3: Wobegong.

The shinny background I shoot someone in is totally irrelevant to whether or not I enjoy the mission.  Not including DLC the ME2 missions were basically boring as hell since they were all the same thing shoot fest in 3rd person shooter system.  Yeah this one was on a jungle in the tight tunnel you walked down and this one was in rocky terrain in the tight tunnel you walked down, but it all feels the same to me.  About the only one with some difference was the weather anomaly one where the fog obscurred your view, and that was just because of the fog.  ME1s primary side missions did a better job of giving you a reaosn to be there which is much more important to me than what the background I shoot someone is.

I'll have you know my Shepard graduated top of class and is the most badass Shepard in the multiverse complex.  I've questioned TIM's choices, then looked from TIM's point of view.   I would do the same exact thing he is doing, tactiful moves are needed in a time like this.

Trust me, there's nothing "tactical" in what TIM does. He's an overconfident ****** who thinks he can bury anything nhe doesn't like. Well, things don't work that way Im afraid. Every so often, those little dark secrets come back to bite you in the ass.

Actually, from the devs' POV, loyalty missions kinda were the equivalent of ME1 assignments.  They got a lot of gripes about how the ME1 stuff had nothing to do with the characters or main storyline and it seemed odd and jarring to be wandering off and doing this random stuff while Feros was being attacked by geth or Saren was on his way to the Conduit, etc.  So they decided to keep the bulk of the content in the story/character parts and out of the random, side-stuff where you run into mercs or pirates or whatever, as well as to make those short, to the point, and fewer in number.

Overconfident cannot describe TIM.  Manipulative would be a better word.  I find his moves tactical for the greater cause.

Quick question, have you at least read the synopsis of the comics?
Because from what I gleam; how TIM got is eyes is connected to some very life changing events, and for me at least makes him a complex individual who believes he is doing the right thing, regardless of how asinine the choice seems at the time.

Many folks around here seem to use a "main quest" / "side quest" binary filter. That's why you'll often see loyalty missions lumped together with the N7 missions -- if this is your taxonomy of missions there's no other way to classify them.

I've got no idea why people like that classification system. They've read too many walkthroughs?

No, his "eyes" are a popular misconception that he is controlled by Reapers. He is not in fact possesed by anyone. His eyes were fried by the artifact after receiving a vision much like Shepard did, just much more intense. He was given standard Turian cybernetic replacements and he kept them.

I thought the side missions in ME1 were bad.

However, the side missions in ME2 were amazing - at least some of them were.

- The terrifying one where you first find a datapad saying, "If you're reading this, GET OUT NOW!", and you hear the continuous moaning of husks, even if you can't see them? Chilling and memorable.

- Exploring the crashed ship, hoping and praying that it doesn't fall into the ravine before you get to the data you're searching? My heart was in my throat.

- Finding an intact prothean beacon and being allowed to see that vision from the first game... only with a hint regarding the collectors? I loved that tip of the hat.

- The mission where you have to fight your way through a group of mercs in order to stop missiles from hitting a human colony, but then you discover you can only stop one of the missiles? I love when the game gives moral choices where it's not instantly obvious which is the 'right' one.

But, um, weren't the ME1 sidequests all about shooting people up, all the time?  I can't think of any missions in 1 that weren't shoot fests, which is part of what made them boring. Whereas in 2, some of the quests actually didn't involve shooting at all, like the Jahare (sp?)  station sidequest, the crashed ship sidequest, the "get the radiation shields working again" quest, etc.

Scanning should go away. I suppose that means exploration itself shoud go too, since I don't see any reason to go to those systems without needing to mine them. Though I suppose Bio could contrive something.

Honestly, the "don't shoot anyone" side quests are really pointless.

I'd rather there be possibilities to beat side quests without killing anyone if there are still people to kill there, like in ME1's UNC: Major Kyle.

You CAN kill people, or you can AVOID killing people.

Rather than, "Land. Press a button. Leave."

Reeeeeal memorable there.
