There was emotion involved. SOMEONE cared. These were very story heavy and I LOVED that.
In ME2, no one cared. You didn't speak to someone who said, "Please, go here and do this, I need you to do it, please."
What we got in ME2 was, "Probe launched. Oh look, I found something. Land, shoot everything that moves, leave. Email."
That SUCKS.
I want to have to talk to someone first. Hear the emotion in their voice as to why I have to do this. Give me a reason to CARE. Don't just drop me on a planet and tell me to do it. Make me WANT to do it.
ME1 succeeded there where ME2 completely and utterly failed.
ME3 better be in ME1's vein on that regard.
As for those moments you mentioned, like the ship shaking and the GET OUT on the husk assignment-
Forgettable to me. Why? Because there's nothing that makes me feel like I had to do either of those.
Give me the desire and the will to complete them. Then I'll never forget them.
To me, one of the main themes of ME2 is: "Doing the right thing even if no one aknowledges or rewards you for it." Shepard is this outcast now, who will not recieve any medals for any of the work she's doing. Even clearing out the collector base will be something that no one will even know about, except folks with access to high level intel (like the STG). It's a question of, will you still do the right thing, even if the universe despises you? Being a hero, of course Shep will.
And you do get emails, and get to read datapads during the missions, to get the story and understand why it's important to kill these mercs, or clean out these geth, or destroy that horrible device that's making the husks. You even occasionally get an email of gratitude, thanking you for your actions. But I like the contrast between 1 & 2 - in 1 you are practically a god whom everyone loves and respects. In 2, you are the plaything of a cold and unfeeling universe. The darkness and lonliness of 2 isi going to make 3 all the more epic when you pull out a golden win.
