Just got the game and am loving it, but it keeps crashing back to the desktop (after roughly 20-30 mins of game-time).  It's basically unplayable now, which is a shame.  Most of the time i'm getting a "apphangb1" message.

Here're my machine's specs:-

OS - Win 7 64-bit (latest updates)
CPU - i5 2500K
RAM - 4GB DDR3
Mobo - ASrock P67 Extreme6 (latest BIOS)
GPU - Asus GTX560 Ti DCUII (latest drivers and BIOS)
DirectX (11) - latest
Prim. HD - Intel 120GB SSD

Have tried lowering the settings (shouldn't really have to with the above specs), but the game's crashing with the same frequency?

Any ideas what's going on?  Cheers.

nVIDIA's Driver 175.33 ? Bad news. (The concept of "latest" is a poor one.  Dates and IDs are best.)

Nope, the latest one (280.19).

Visit www.geforce.com.

The 280.19 beta drivers (which have been approved by whatever - I don't know what the system is for driver releases), and appear to fix many of the DX11 issues in the game.

Ah, sorry (just woke up - misread previous comments). Don't know then...

As I said in another thread, I suspect there are memory leaks, because my game doesn't crash after a long time playing, but does develop a delay between attack animations and damage being registered. (similar to what I used to get on DA:O)

I guess I could try a system format and DAII reinstall. Won't be a happy bunny if it's still happening after that though. A waste of a great game if you can't play it without crashing back to the desktop every 20-30 mins. Can't remember the last time I had this many probs with a triple-A property (a game into it's third patch too).

Doubt there's much point doing a system format. The memory leaks would be within the game.

Eek!  Don't format your system!  If you're going to uninstall/reinstall the game, I'd just use Revo Uninstaller and maybe run CCleaner to clear out some of the debris.  Do you have Legacy or the other DLC?  If not, maybe you could try just running a vanilla install, unpatched.  All the patches essentially ruined performance for me across multiple Windows installs and hardware configurations.

Try and see if playing on Dx9 helps.

Dumb question...is the game patched to 1.3?
Do you have all Windows 7 updates?
Are you overclocking anything?

Overclocking has nothing to do with game crashing to desktop.

Actually, it can...

You may need to disable the User Account Control. Here's the FAQ on that: http://support.ea.co...detail/a_id/380

Also, have you tried setting the affinity for only 2 CPUs to see if a memory leak is occurring between processors? To do this, launch the game and get to the main intro screen. Alt Tab to your desktop and open the Windows Task manager. Under processes, find DragonAge2.exe and right click it. You should see "Set Affinity". Select that and it will open a window. You will see all your CPUs listed. De-select (while the game is still running) all processors but 0 and 1. Press apply and close the Task Manager. Resume the game.

Please post back if this doesn't help resolve the crashing.

Does it crash in DX9 mode or DX11? What are your temps on your rig as you are playing, especially the gpu and cpu?

I'm sorry, it's my opinion because  I've been overclocking for 6 years now and I've never seen games crashing due to computer instability. Well, except BSOD which can happen if a setting is too high or there is a lack in voltage or there is too high temperature.

It absolutely will and it absolutely can.  Especially when the Overclock is on the GPU.  OCing your system can create all kinds of instabilities that may not be realized until you update a driver or try a new game.  Can cause apps to crash or the entire system to shut down.

Read up on it if you are an overclocker to save yourself some headaches.  You may be lucky or know what your doing when it comes to voltage tweaking and stress testing but many people do not and just pop in numbers.  I used to OC when it was vogue back in the P4 days.  Now with processors as powerful as they are, it just doesn't make sense anymore.  I had a memory OC that would reboot my system.  It was one tenth of a voltage point off.

How do you find out what the core temp is on your pc. I used to find it in my Nvidia settings, but I can't find it with the new driver I downloaded.

Before I switched to my current ATI card and had to replace my motherboard, I used to use SpeedFan to monitor system temperatures.  I'd probably still use it, but for the fact that it seems to hate my current motherboard and loves to report my CPU temps as -158 degrees.

I've been overclocking CPUs for 20 years, so it's not as though I'm suggesting you not do it, but when you start seeing strange things with programs it should always be at the top of your list of possible causes. Some programs are very sensitive to the slightest instability, and as heavily as this game leans on the CPU, it wouldn't surprise me if it would show up with DA. Also, because this game leans so heavily on the CPU, it heats the CPU up. Since OC'd chips tend to have heat issues anyway, unless your cooling is amazing, that alone could cause your problem.

I've never overclocked, wouldn't know how, or how much, but I really need to find where to look for the system temperature.  It used to show up in my NVIVIA settings, but with my new driver I can't find it. Any suggestions?

I use RealTemp to track my cpu temp. For gpu, i use MSI afterburner to OC, but it also tracks your gpu temp.
