Sorry if there was a topic already. If there was, didn't see it.

Just read the links if you want to know what's this about. It's better explained there than anything I can put in a nutshell here.

But anyways, yeah. Diablo III will have an auction house where real money is used as currency. You can buy, or sell, items gold and components in the Diablo world for sweet, sweet dollars.
There will of course still be an auction house for in-game gold.

I was hoping to get some discussion about this...
What does this mean for Diablo III in your opinion? What does such a controversial move mean in general? Do you see this as a bad or a good thing?

I've never played any Diablo games, WoW or Starcraft, but I think it's a smart move for Blizzard, considering the online economy that has arisen from their other games without Blizzard participating.

It makes sense. I'd never use it, but it makes sense.

Interesting - wouldn't buy anything, but hey, if I can earn a few extra dollars while goofing off, why not.

In retrospect, I'm amazed something like this didn't happen earlier.

Is there supposed to be some problem with the idea?

To be honest...as I read this I'm wondering why no Game has ever had this in it before? I know folks playing MMO's have done this kind of thing on the side, without an in-game system for protection...so this only makes sense.

I wouldn't do it and I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of issues to be mediated and probably at least one real-life murder over a bad sale (it's happened before) but I gues we should prepare for every game to start adding something like this if it works in the long-run.

I'm not for or against it. When D3 comes out I'll be only playing single player anyway, I never cared much for multiplayer in Diablo 1 or 2 and I doupt this will change it.

I predict the majority of sales after a while will be from similar farmers as the ones selling gold in World of Warcraft, they do it for a living and spend way more time than any normal player per session.

They need to add that to WoW

The amount of BoEs I have in my bank waiting for the AH to crash so I can charge sky-high prices is ridiculous, but for real money I'd sell them all.

Good move Blizzard,

Bioware, fancy doing this?
I wouldn't mind selling some arcane tomes or whatever on dragon age to make some cash

Hmh? You have to be constantly on internet? Didn't know, 'cause as far as I know, you need internet only for multiplayer, and you can't bring items from single-player to multiplayer as far as I know.

But I don't see that as a controversial move, as it has been done so many times before. This however, is a completely new thing.
I find it funny that they say the main idea is to provide safety and security to players, but Blizzard takes it's cut from the sales and cashing out.

Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing for the multiplayer experience remains to be seen in my opinion.

For some reason I don't see this ending well.

First you have silly things like deflation and inflation, currancy conversion, the fact the US Dollar is being replaced with a wide range of world currencies, from the Euro to the Yuan. And also it needs a form of payment, IE a Credit Card. Which as we've seen with Sony, is going to turn into a target for hackers.

Then there is Currency conversion Issues. Say I have the Helm of the Dread Lord for $20. a European can come on and buy it for 13.87, Someone from India will be spending 881.40 Rupee's. A japanese, 1546.60 Yen, and the Chinese Yuan for 128.

So some people are getting it cheap, others are getting ****ed. And god help us if memebers can set the prices, because F2P MMO's taught me one important thing. You can raise your prices throught the roof, all the other sellers minus a few with pesky morals (like me) will fallow suit. And some Idiot will buy it no matter what. So my lovely helmet which is just nice little pixels you won't get anything for, can run you $50 with another seller.

It was in the announcement, they're effectively merging single and multi player together.

Q: Will there be separate auction houses in each region? Will I be allowed to bid on items from players outside my own region?
A:

Due to various factors, including technology, language, and currency,
there will be multiple separate auction houses serving different player
communities around the world. We'll share specific details on how the
auction houses will work for each region as we get closer to launch.
______________________________________________________________________

So I doubt that currency will be a problem. The economy will be created by the players themselves, Blizzard apparently aims to stay away from the auction house according to their current plans, but they aren't denying the possibility of selling cosmetic things later on.

I understood it differently.. but if this is indeed the case then I won't bother. Multiplayer D1+2 sucked unless you felt like farming moocows for hours every day and I never saw the fun in that.

Which leads to my 2nd point. If players manage it mark my words, you'll see basic little **** up for huge amounts. And also that system doesn't change a damn thing, I used to deal in currencies back in High School with the Virtual stock exchange, and I made a killing on it and learned alot of loop holes. Give me an account or multiple ones, with a line to my bank account and I could milk that **** on the currency exchange line.

We all value each others currency in different ways, my examples where with the US. Pity I don't have 30k and a few weeks to throw away.

But you will have someone abusing this system. Mark my words on that. before even half a year has passed, the system will be ****ed on, have an artical on money laundering on the Kotaku. Or be caught up in a lawsuit. Either for some "Fairness" type issues, or hacker related.

Will the system be abused to earn money? Yes, 100% sure it will. But do I personally care if others get ****ed over? No, I really don't.
What I'm really interested is that how this will affect the game as an experience. I can't put my finger on it if it's bad or good, but it still slightly took away some hype for me. I'm always against it when you can use money to buy in-game power.

One of Diablo's main attractions always has been in my mind the collecting of items and sets. I'm just worried that this will take away the joy of collecting them.

We'll see how it pans out, I guess.

True enough just hope they don't have any sort of crafting bs in it, or you can only find one of this praticular item set in your game so you have to go here and buy it from a player. Thats where the abuse will get to you. Pretty much why I gave up on MMO's quickly.

I'm not quite sure what the problem here is. If idiots want to overpay, why shouldn't you be allowed to rip them off?

Oh, wait.... so you're worried it will be impossible to complete item sets without becoming an idiot yourself?

Sounds like a good feature to take money from lazy rich kids.
