Why did so many people say Dragon Age 2 was a bad game?

I don't get it. I bought the game about a week and a half ago beat it in a couple of days and loved it. I thought it was really fun and a huge improvement upon Dragon Age Origins and Awakening as far as game play is concerned. I even like Isabella, Carver, Avalina, and Merrill. I never thought much of Anders and Fenneris was intersting but didn't really love him.  My Hawke was a female mage with a diplomatic personality. Anyway I had a ton of fun with this even if the story was way to the left of what was in Origins and I did miss characters like Morigon, Ogrhen and Lelianna, Wynne and even Sten and Dog. Overall great game I am excited to see what happens in DA3

Cause they tend to compare it too much with DAO. DA2 in itself it's not a bad game overall. I enjoyed it.

Wow, I didn't think there were enough hours in a couple of days to complete the game with normal life like eating, sleeping, and personal hygiene interfering. You must have blown through it with very little branching into the side quests and exploring. How much time did you spend on non-main plot points?

Because it was not  Dragon Age: Origins 2  which is what they all wanted but did not get. Some compliants are  legit - most  I simple shake my head at  the majority of the time.  Overall I think its a   good to somewhat great game that is a step in the right direction. Bioware just needs to learn  and grow from the exp of making DA 2  and DA 3 will be fine.

 Long story short:
Because it has changed too much, compared to DAO.
There are tons of tons of threads about this specific topic, so to sum them up:
- Changed and simplified gameplay mechanics, less tactics, more awesome™
- too less variety in skills, customization (i.e. races), maps and locations
- less participation in the now non-epic story
- less adventurous
- cliché companions with a lack of depth
- simplified dialogues and less real choices
- about 1/4 as long as Origins
- anime-ish elves, strange darkspawn, JRPG-like Fenris
- disappointment over the fact that you're no longer playing The Warden
- constantly magically appearing waves of enemies
- Less CRPG, more Action RPG in general

I guess that's the most important negatives on DA2, iirc..;)

Things I disliked about DA2:
1. Copy and Paste areas over and over and over again
2. Majority of quests are actually fetch quests with no worth while rewards
3. Mages are still wearing their dressing gowns everywhere
4. Importing has no real effect on anything except a few cameos
5. Downgrade on aesthetics, especially music in my opinion
6. The time jumps are handled poorly and take away from the immersion
7. It takes no longer than 25-35 hours to complete everything the game has in 1 playthrough
(Not long enough)
8. Some things just don't look right to me
(Running, DW Rogue's leaping acrobatics, 2H Warrior's sliding attacks)
9. Why on earth did do that to the Darkspawn, intimidation factor -50%
10. Unless I'm playing a mage, I don't feel connected to the war of Mages and Templars
11. I felt trapped in Kirkwall, I wanted to explore not spend the entire game in 1 city

My final verdict 6.5/10, I hope they do better and take their time with DA3 :crying:

 Things I liked about DA2:
1. A new DA game
2. They improved combat
3. Graphics were better
4. The Friendship/Rivalry system worked brilliantly
5. Companions were individual and opinionated
6. The Black Emporium allowed for tweaks to appearance(A feature that should be in every RPG with CC)
7. I prefer the voiced protagonist
8. Qunari, Elves and Dwarves were more than just larger or smaller humans

Don't know what happend there, but I'll repost what I liked anyway :D

Because DA2 isn't an indy game developed by some small team. If it was a 20 dollar Steam game by the people that made Terraria, Limbo or Torchlight - you would have seen it praised and adored.

This is not the case. It was developed by Bioware. It was marketed as the direct sequal to Dragon Age: Origins and carried the full 60 dollar pricetag. The arguement that "this isn't Origins 2" is a joke. It's the sequal to the game or else that number "2" wouldn't be on the game.

They did an abra-cadabra magic trick and POOF! Fooled us all. Surprise! We only spent a year working on this (and will drag this excuse out whenever our decisions are called into question)! We're also pushing a ton of our political bias now! And the characters you've grown to care about? Poof! Gone! The heart of the game that was called the spirtual succesor to BG2? Poof! Gone! Remember all those decisions you made in DA:O? Poof! They didn't matter! Then again, only a couple of the choices you make in DA2 will really matter anyways! Blah, blah blah.

You can read any forum to view what people disliked but to boil it down - DA2 shouldn't have cost as much as DAO, it shouldn't have been called Dragon Age 2 and it shouldn't have been marketed as a Bioware masterpiece.

ps. Elves now look like aliens. Why? I have no frickin idea. Nobody told Felicia Day though. Posted Image

You know I thought about that  and looked at the line up  for this year and i would loved  for DA 2 to have more time in the oven to get all nice and golden. .   DA 2 came out in March so six more months would have put up aganist  the coming release of BF 3 and slew of holiday titles it may have very got squeezed out the market   Skyrim, Deus Ex, Batman,  BF 3, MW 3, etc etc. Waiting another year would have put it against Mass Effect 3 and you really don't want  that to happen. So yes more time in the oven would have been nice but I'm trying to look for where at most maybe push the release back to say  July  which  is during the summer dead time. Yet  could the  team put the kinda polish we would have wanted on the game in a 4 month crunch - we may never know.

The Bolds  are the ones I agree with.

2. a WoW player  I  agree and yes just put the blinders on and had a get it done  mentality
3. Sooooo Tired of that or atleast make the robes like good and take those stupid looking feather hoods off.
5.  Yes they were.
8.Somes things I just  shrug  its a game.  They could have executed better giving the Rogue a counter kill  or chain kill skill.  The Warriors just need some kind of  charge skill  but they  did improve 2h warrior combat becasue I HATED it in DA:O origins.
9.   Well if they would abandon that obtuse  "select this location map" and let you move about the city more it would have not been so bad.

Oghren actually was deep and tragic character.

On topic.. Well, I dislike the game for many reasons, mostly because it has, on closer look, almost the exact same flaws that Origins had + boatloads of new, albeit, minor flaws that pile up.

Lets look at the combat for example; My main gripe with combat in origins was that it was boring and tedious, why? Because there was absolutely no balance and encounter-design sucked.

Lets look at DA2 combat.. the classes are more balanced in relation to each other, but within the classes - there are the good abilities and the bad abilities - leading to situation that there is no reason to use anything but the good abilities. Lets look at the encounter design - it is different from DA:O.. but it is still bad - you fight countless mooks that are not in reality very dangerous to your party-members.

In both games, the combat ends up being just a contest of how much DPS you can put out - this gets boring after a while. I prefer DA:O combat for the single reason that it is over more quickly than DA2, there is some satisfaction in destroying a pack of Darkspawn in very fast manner, vs. destroying waves of random mooks (while a single wave might not last long, the encounter itself lasts long because of the countless waves)

Then there comes to play the minor annoyances in combat in DA2, lack of good camera, for example, the fact that you have to walk into every ambush because you can't start going into offensive before you are in some metaphysical state of combat.

Otherwise - the gameplay/narrative segregation went even further in DA2, I can name quite many occasions where I found that the cinematics contradicted information given through gameplay (example - at the start - I was doing rather fine against the countless waves of Darkspawn, and suddenly, there comes a cinematic, telling that I was not doing fine.)

I personally don't like voiced protagonist - this added severe annoyance throughout the game - greatly diminishing my enjoyment.

The new art-style is debatable, I found it, to be honest, very ugly, especially most of the armors in the game.

Add in the new UI, which is so ugly that it took all joy out of reading codices.

Legacy is a good indicator of what DA2 should have been. I did like DA2, but got tired of politics, 40 hours in Kirkwall and the endlessly recycled maps. Fortunately, the devs listened, as that got fixed in Legacy. We can now look forward to quality DLC and a DA3 that everyone can enjoy.

The “huge improvement upon Dragon Age Origins and Awakening as far as game play is concerned” is absolutely not what I would call an improvement, it is a change that some players like and some other do not like. Personally I prefer the slower more tactical and more realist gameplay of DAO by far.
If you add:
That the story of DAO is much better (to my point of view)
That the choices have much more impact on the scenario in DAO
That you have much more choices in dialogues in DAO (most of the time in DAO you choose what your character will answer and in DA2 you choice how Hawk will answer)
That I have played DAO only with the isometric camera because it is the only one that I like in RPG
That (with the exception of Kirkwall districts) each map of DA2 was used for at least 10 supposed different areas
That I hate the wave system when it is used without good justification
That I find silly that the companions cannot use the best armours you find
That for me the origin system was one of the main advantage of DAO over similar games (like Neverwinter Night 2)
That I prefer the less flashy graphic style of DAO
That DAO was much more polished (every item of the game has a description for example)

At the end, for me, DA2 did not bring many improvements over DAO but it came with a lot of new flaw that made it far inferior to its predecessor.
Does it mean that it is a really bad game? Not really, but it is a rushed little game that is enjoyable to play once but that I would not replay (I have already finished DAO 5 times) and that do not worth the price of a good polished game.

Now that I  can agree with wholeheartedly. I'm working on my second play through and just did the Qunari mission with gas. I find talking the Arishok tiring and just damn near pointless.    By the end of the end of  Act 3 I was ready to break in the tower, grab Bethany and leave   Kirkwall can rot for all I cared.

The problem with  enviorments is that they used  quick travel map for a smaller setting. If they had opened the  map up lets actually walk from location to location with the option of quick travel it would have not been so bad.

IMO there are three groups of DA2 critics / haters:

#1:  Some people have geniune criticisms of the game which really made them not like it.

#2:  Many people wanted it to be Dragon Age Origins 2 and when it wasn't they refused to accept it.

#3:  People who experienced a severe case of confirmation bias.  "I knew it!  This game is terrible.  It's all EA's fault!  Stanley Woo tried to punch my grandmother!"

No group is really wrong in their opinions (except 3, Open your minds people) just like those of us who enjoyed DA2 are really right in ours.

It's taken me a long time to get to this understanding though.  When people say they hate DA2 it's fine.  They're not attacking me personally and their opinions don't ruin the game for me.  You just need to understand it wasn't for some people what they were looking for.  You can wish SOME of them would be a little quieter about it and perhaps a little more polite when phrasing their arguments but ulitmately it has NO affect on myself and so I can comfortably and politely disagree and be on my way.

pepole dont like things that arr diffrent /Plinkett

I can guarantee you that if Dragon Age 2 had come out first, it would have gotten 10/10 reviews and everyone would have called Dragon Age Origins complete garbage.

But aside from that:
1- Recycled areas are boring.
2- Waves of enemies are just tedious to deal with.
3- The plot is heavily railroaded, even more so than DAO. In DAO, the Warden had objectives to accomplish and the way these objectives were accomplish had consequences on the plot, even if they were minor. Regardless of how Hawke completes his objectives, the consequences of his actions are pretty much the same in the end.
4- We were told that the game would span over a decade. There's a three year timeskip between acts 1 and 2 and another three year timeskip between acts 2 and 3. That's over half the decade gone right there.
5- We were told that Hawke was the most important person in Thedas. He's not. Bartrand, the Arishok, Petrice, Orsino, Meredith and Anders are all much, much more important to the plot of Dragon Age 2 than Hawke ever is. Throughout the game, Hawke shows no initiative and has no agency in anything that happens in Kirkwall.
6- We were told that Hawke would become the Champion of Kirkwall. The title of Champion of Kirkwall apparently means nothing because getting it doesn't affect Hawke in any way, shape or form.
7- The central conflict of Dragon Age 2 is left completely unresolved. Hawke accomplishes little and what he does accomplish has no meaning and leaves the players unrewarded and left hanging.

This is probably the saddest part for me. The "end" of DA2 was the worst Bioware ending yet.

Nobody likes cliffhanger endings in their videogames because the medium isn't like other media where in most cases we can expect those cliffhangers to be resolved in a timely fashion.

Games can sometimes take years to develop. Halo 2 for example made you not only wait for Halo 3 but also buy an entirely new hardware setup to see how it ends.

Developers should get this through their heads.

It's just not a proper sequel. Sequels take what's best from the first game, improve on it, and give more content to push along the story. DA2 didn't do any of that. It felt like an entirely different game made by an entirely different company.

The side missions took like 10 minutes a piece for the most part. That and it was the majority of a slow weekend. The wife took the kids to 2 birthday parties and that gave me time to get it in. But I didn't do all of them.

Whenever you completely change the identity of a series you're bound to ****** off a lot of fans. Especially since Bioware "fixed" a lot of things that were not exactly broken to begin with. Origins was not perfect by any means but it still had a lot of things going for it,not to mention a good fan base. But instead of finding a happy balance and fixing up the problems while keeping the successful formula, Bioware flung to the complete other extreme when they didn't necessarily have to. Not only that, but the game also has all the $ign$ of being rushed out the door.

Even with all these concerns I have with the sequel (and it is without a doubt my least favorite Bioware game) it still is better than some RPG's out there today. It's barely adequate when it had the potential to be glorious. This entire series with its lore and characters still does have a lot of potential,so it was just a shame to see this sequel given this kind of treatment.

Dragon Age is beginning to remind me of the Devil May Cry series. Successful first installment followed by a rushed, very mediocre sequel and HOPEFULLY followed by some good sequels that return to form afterwards. Though I might be using a poor example since DmC looks atrocious.

i can some what agree to that. i know if mass effect would have moved this differently away from part 1 in the 2nd I just may be saying the same thing but I felt like the story was really over after the Archdemon was killed and they were pushing to force a story that really sucked in Awakening. I liked the entirely new plot in DA2. And outside of it not having much to do with the Darkspawn this time around I really did like DA2. Some of the complaints here are very blah to me though.

Why?

1. The plot. They set up this epic conflict with a terrifying enemy and his army/navy, and then completely forget about it in the 3rd act, instead giving us one of the stupidest villains in the history of Bioware games, and one of the worst endings of all-time. Utterly shameful. Trained monkeys could have written a better plot.

2. Lack of customization. They take away from the player all ability to customize their teammates appearances, and even the main character is severely limited in their appearance options (completely unlike the original DA or ME). I had 2 completely different rogues (one archer, one melee), and because there are so few viable armor/appearance choices they end up looking exactly the same. Never happened with DA.

3. The ridiculous re-spawning enemies in EVERY SINGLE FIGHT. It becomes so predictable and so boring after the first hour that you want to shove a railroad spike through your brain. The combat is so bad that you can literally play every fight with your eyes closed, just hitting the attack button over and over and over and over. What a waste.

In short, they dumbed down the game so badly that it is no longer an RPG, and it just a stupid action game with a lousy plot. I'd have to suffer severe brain damage to enjoy this garbage.
