A good question, but I can see why we don't have an acceptable answer.  Two reasons.  The first being that information is much harder to spread in ancient times, and much easier to suppress. Especially when said information could be considered sacrilege in a world where you can executed for it. The second reason is that Tevinter itself is even Andrastian now, just with a slightly different set of beliefs than the Orlesian sect we're accustom to. If they condemn their former magisters, and it's likely that they do (look at how modern Germany views Hitler), they wouldn't be too thrilled about such a thing either.

Truth.  And I do consider this.   It just seems like this is a big freaking issue.  Huge.  If the paradigm is "We visit the Fade.  City's there, it's Golden", and it suddenly changes to "City is BLACK!!"....I just feel like this is something that's going to be talked about and travel down at least in folk memory.  Though, I suppose the Chant of Light itself might be a form of this.

It could either way, it's true.  I guess what's strange to me is that we hear zero discussion about this issue in game.  None.  And seems a bit too important and inyourface for that not to appear a bit strange, imo.

@Why.  I agree.  And I do feel that one small record or note that survived and indicates otherwise should have started discussion to the point that we'd hear about it.  The fact that we don't is interesting.

Also, what I find interesting is that Cory himself doesn't mention what he previously saw (does he?).  He says he certainly expected the Golden City, but we never hear anything like "I SAW the Golden City before.  So what. the. hell??"

@Darius Vir - I suspect that any existing clue will be revealed soon, either in a DLC or DA3. It's a bread crumb trail right now.

As for Corypheus, in his defense, he did just wake up after years of slumber. Perhaps his lament regarding the Black City superceded any wonder of what it was before. Could be that from one angle, if the golden city was actually ever viewed, it did look golden. But I think it makes more sense for it to be legend and lore. Intangible until it was breached and then discovered to be tainted.

This, I think, is most likely.  His focus did seem to be on his lament and confusion rather than his rationale.  Which, given the circumstances, is understandable.

We'll hear more, I agree.

On a semi-random side note:  After Legacy, I'm fairly certain Dumat is still alive in some form.  Could be a red herring, but this guy...err, Head Archdemon/Old God/Malevolent Entity.... has been involved in WAYYYY to much for me to believe he's 900 years gone.
