Sentience is being able to think outside of your programing. We are capable of doing things that we were never programed to do just like the Geth were able to do things they were never programed to do. We aren't born with the knowlege of how to build a house... or how to operate a car we learn all these things and are able to absorbe new information, As for 'natural' it doesn't matter how one came about being all that matters is can it think and the Geth can.

No clearly you don't understand it, sentience has nothing to do with "thinking outside of your programming" it is nothing but self awareness, your putting it on a pedestal it doesn't need to be on. But let me throw this at you, a dog is sentient because it can learn to roll over and play dead and sniff out bombs, I don't think their biologically programmed to do that. A whale can learn to jump through hoops on command, a seal can balance a ball on its nose, a tiger can do magic tricks, so if sentience is "thinking outside of the box" so to say, then once again, sentience is nothing special. So unless you have another means of segregating sentience from every other animal, then I think we're back to square one.

there's multiple levels of sentience. hence the different laws for treatment of different animals. pigs are a sad exception as they are one of the smartest animals in the world and are treated like cattle and chickens.

First: It was not an act of genocide when the Quarian tried to render all of the Geth inert.
They would have been turned off, and able to be brought back online at a later time.
The Quarian fully admit they had no idea how far the Geth had gone, they assumed most Geth were still just machines running on programming.
The Geth most likely did NOT fight back for self preservation more-so they fought back because they already had programming detailing that type of action to threats. Since other species have Mech's for combat I'm sure some Geth had the same programming.

Once again however, 300 years later, the Geth most likely truly are sentient as they have built there own space stations. We can argue that they kept the Qaurian world tidy out of programming or personal choice fact is we don't know.

I do not consider anything more than a program that can't answer emotional questions with more than "No Data Available."

The Quarians and the Geth are not making peace.

It's like asking Muslims and Jews to be best friends.

They hate eachother on principle... Well, the geth don't have emotions, but you know what I mean.

So your saying that if someone is Jewish they have to hate Muslims? and vice versa? Really?

Well it makes sense if you ignore about a thousand years of real-world history and distort reality for the sake of winning an internet argument.

Maybe, but this isn't Muslims and Jews we're talking about. And HATE is an emotion which, like many other, Geth lack, they don't wish to incite, just understand. The only at fault here would be Quarians, but even among them there are those who would prefer to make peace instead of war. So the Jewish/Muslim argument is pretty much invalid.

P.S.: I'm pretty sure there people in the world who are willing to look past their history.

They distrust one another for very smart reasons.

I agree, which was why I say it requires that we ignore 1000 years of history and that we distort reality for the argument to make sense.

As for the geth/quarians it does seem like both sides have rational reasons to distrust each other given their mutual history; though the quarians never did bother to try and settle a new planet after they were forced from their homes. If they had they wouldn't be stuck in those suits.

Not knowing how much "sentience" the Geths really have is a big part of the Geth dilemma.

They arent necessarily sentient as per our human standards. But then the humans cant link together and share concensus. An AI hive mind who looks at us from its point of view could believe our individuality keeps us from being truly sentient, like a bunch of uncoordinated sensors wandering around aimlessly.

We'll never have a similar definition of sentience with all species. But then "sentience" never stopped ppl from killing each other so even accepting the geth as sentient beings isnt gonna keep the Quarians from wanting their homeworld back.
