If you burn amaranthine and try to save the keep how do you keep Varel from dying?

Could have swore I read about how to avoid Varel taking a arrow to the throat on one of those pages.

Varel cannot be saved if you defend the Keep. There's no way around it.

I imported an Awakening save into Golems of Amgarrak where the Keep was fully upgraded and I received a letter from Seneschal Garavel, implying that he had succeeded Varel.

I'm fairly certain that Varel dies in all possible endings of Awakening. Defend the Keep and he dies onscreen. Defend the city and he dies offscreen.

Varel, like most Awakening characters, has several endings. He may be killed whilst valiantly defending Vigil's Keep against The Mother's darkspawn army or will lead the Silver Order for many years.
If you import an Awakening character into The Golems of Amgarrak and he is still alive, you will receive a letter from him.
