He's not a husk, he looks very similar to one. Ben can talk, and remembers some things before he was changed. The artifact he came in contact with was the Arca Monolith. In the comic they find out that if someone touches the artifact, they have a psychic connection with it, and they are drawn to it, no matter where it is.

If you haven't read Evolution, you should. It's a great read and really gives a lot of background to The Illusive Man. It's set during The First Contact War. :)

not quite. you're right about sheps but TIMs are his own, created by the reaper device, it's in the books and the comics. i dunno how you can't spoiler something that's 4 years old, but needless to say it's not unanswerable question, just the answer's not in the games so far, it's in the books and comics.
