I didn't hate the looks of the character, (Here's the selection, for anyone who hasn't already seen it.) and I thought it was pretty cool that Bioware let the fans help pick the design, but I can't help feeling just a tad disappointed in us, the community.  Really guys?*  They offered us one Combat Barbie amid 6 women (all of whom seemed to look a lot younger than shep's 29-31 yrs depending on how you view the timeline, but hey, that's Hollywood baby) and we went with the Barbie?  Granted, the tousled hairdo was cool and seemed to fit the Shep persona, and most of us femShepers will probably continue using our custom designs anyway, but it's still a small blow to see a gaming company struggling to make strides in acceptance and inclusiveness feature a typical and cliched version of feminine strength and heroism.  Thanks for trying Bioware, but apparantly, we're not ready for that kind of responsibility yet.  Maybe you should've started us off with a goldfish, saw how we did with that, and went from there.
Then again... maybe I'm just bitter that my choice was shot down...

*guys is being used here to encompass all genders, fyi

edit:  I think the PC Gamer article sucks
but
I do agree with this one
just hoping to give a little insight as to why I feel the way I do.

Barbie won because of the Facebook "I have no idea what Mass Effect is, I dont play games, but I've been asked for my (otherwise worthless) opinion, and she looks just Squee" effect.

I just want to see stats on ME3 comparing the number of votes tallied from Failbook, to the amount of famsheps played in total, irrespective of which face is used. Willing to bet my left teste theres a huge discrepency.

Bitter much?

The fact that she has fair hair does not makes her a Barbie. Only people with a head full of clichees and stereotypes think that way.

Hint: People like you.

What was your choice? Your link take to the blonde Shepard.
edit: I don't see the problem with her having blonde hair. The fourth Shepard looked more like a Hollywood actress in my opinion.

Even the poll here lead to the victory of blonde Shepard. So it's not only facebook.

I'm thrilled by the decision. She was by far my favorite.

Goodness- that's a lot of anger over a post that was in no way personal.  I married a towhead, my kid's the most beautiful thing in the entire universe- and he's as blonde as blonde can be, but if it makes you feel better to think I was attacking you and all the other blondies out there, by all means, go ahead.

The 'my choice'-link links to blonde Shepard. What a missive fail on your behalf.

And honestly I couldn't care less. There's more important things in life (and even Mass Effect) than worrying about a main characters' hair color.

edit: The fact is, that most people who plays Mass Effect doesn't give a flying **** about Femshep, so you should be happy that Bioware even bothers including that feature. I would personally prefer that Bioware scrapped the ability to play as a female, and included more planets, missions etc.
And as someone already mentioned you can still create your own Shep.

Oh for the love of the maker... She's just being used for the advertising and art design, they're not FORCING you to use her for your game.

The democracy choose the blonde Shepard, that isn't just the democracy of what the second poster suggested. Blonde Shep won the poll on the Bioware social poll as well. If you don't like democracy, go live in China or something.

I was curious so I compared the Facebook poll to this one, and was pleasantly surprised to see that both polls are actually really close, despite FB's 'multi-vote' loophole.

As of today...

Facebook: 68,477 "likes" vs. BSN (marshalleck's poll): 1,983 votes.

- Shepard 1: 11% vs. 14%
- Shepard 2: 7% vs. 8%
- Shepard 3: 16% vs. 12%
- Shepard 4: 18% vs. 18%
- Shepard 5: 43% vs. 41%
- Shepard 6: 5% vs. 7%

#5 is clearly in the lead by over 20% in both polls and only 2% lower on BSN. #2, #4, and #5 are all within a 2% margin. The only real difference is in their opinions of #1 and #3, with BSN leaning towards 1 and FB leaning towards 3.

The final choice will probably resemble #5 the most due to such an overwhelming preference by the community, but I wouldn't get married to any specific feature at this stage, like hair color. Chances are they'll look at the vote distribution and comments to make minor tweaks (like hair color, skin tone, face structure), and the modelers/artists will most certainly have to make some interpretations once it makes the jump from concept to model.

From what I saw of the results, the Failbook poll was even more skewed than the one here.
Edit: Just saw the reply above. I must have seen early results and not finalised.

Ive got nothing against blondes, I just prefer redheads.
You know when you've satisfied a redhead. She unties you.

She looks like more of a Hollywood actress than the fifth. I have a question, if the fifht shoud have black hair, or brown hair, you would think that she's a Barbie? Having blonde hair doesn't mean to be a Barbie.

I don't care about you or your childs hair color. You are of the opinion that we are too dumb to vote for the true female hero of the game and instead chose the "Barbie".

...Also, seriously, you're complaining about a 'Barbie' being the face for Female Shepard because you wanted a Rihanna look alike to be the poster girl for 'Defeat the reapers!'?

With all the fuss made about this, I seriously just wanted the REAL default Female Shepard to be the poster girl. It's a bit insulting to her to be honest.

Eh, polls were a bad idea in the first place, IMO. Even though the the BSN one vindicated blondie, (unless her hair is a different color, I think it's an appropriate nickname) letting people who have no idea what the poll is about, let alone own or even played either of the first two games have any say in content designed for the rest of us is pretty absurd.

Really, it only takes one legit fan to take the poll, have it posted on their page, and have 300 of their "friends" take a break from building fence posts in Farmville to pick one of the pictures they thought resembled Scarlet Johannson.

What's done is done, I suppose. In the end, it's not really a big deal, as it's just mostly marketing, like with Vanderloo, though I wish they would of just decided among themselves, and told us to "deal" with it like we did with him.
