The complaint that rings true isn't that any particular choice is bad, but that turning the selection in what amounted to a public beauty contest sends the wrong message.
However, this WAS essentially a beauty contest. "Beauty" may be the wrong term, but it was definitely a contest to determine what the predominancy of the fans felt was the best facial appearance of the character, so a comparrison to a "beauty contest" is not without some merrit.
However, as with all Shepards, male or female, deault or custom, Shepard is what YOU make of her/him. Just because there will be a default setting does not change the ability to choose the story and personality of the character you play. I know there were suggestions of other ways to hold the choosing of the face, and all could have worked to varying degrees of success, but this was the way that we chose to do it. And, despite not everyone preferring the way that we did it, I think allowing our fans to actually chose something like this and including it in teh game was a pretty cool decision by the Dev and Marketing teams.
