To anyone who says blonde shep (or any shep for that matter) looks too young, in the book it mentions that Kahlee Sanders is around 40, but says she could pass for 20 due to the advances in health. If she can look half her age then I think Shep could easily get away with a couple of years.

Then you know some of ppl didn't read the Mass Effect books...  (I did though). And I support everything you have wrote.

Samus is Blonde, but I have trouble thinking of other major female characters.

Rosa in FF4. Celes in FF6. Ashe in FF12 has dirty blonde hair. A few from various fighting games: Sonya Blade, Nina Williams, Cammy. Alexandra in Eternal Darkness (voiced by Jennifer Hale, in fact).  The Boss and Eva in MGS3.  All I got at the moment, and most aren't main characters (or even playable characters).

Sonya in Ninja Gaiden 2, but that is just, ehh... "oversexualized" we could say. The doctor chick form Vanquish, Jill valentine is dyed blonde in RE5 (which was stupid IMO, she looks better with brown hair), and we could say Lighting from XXIII (I got the number right?Sorry not a very FF fan myself) is blonde although she's more like "whitie".

Oh and also the police from Silent Hill.

Again, not main characters....

To be fair, main characters who are girls are pretty darn hard to find to begin with. But you guys are missing the other big one besides Samus:

Aya Brea, from the Parasite Eve series.

Blonde shep isn't even a real blonde! look at those roots! =/ at least give us the option to switch her hair color back to the original shade.

The reason why I voted for blonde Shep is because of her hair style and her face, not becasue she was blonde.

The one dark-skinned FemShep was way too emo for me. There's enough emo in Dragon Age 2. I don't want Mass Effect getting more emo. As I and many others said on the fb page and forum post here, we like blonde FemShep's hairdo but would like a darker hair color. But most of all, I like that hairstyle whether it's blonde or brunette.

It was inevitable. We all knew it would come to this.

I did vote for blonde Shep though.

As a blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman myself, I find this bashing very offensive and saddening. Just because someone has blonde hair does not mean that they are stupid, vapid, superficial, or a "Barbie." Why all this hate? I voted for #5, because to me she embodies FemShep the best. And even though I'm blonde, it doesn't mean I have some sort of superiority complex about it. I regularly create characters with different hair colors than my own. The Shep I consider "canon" for me has black hair...So why can't others be just as accepting of blonde hair? It boggles my mind. :(

Fenris.  (In before Fenris fans attack).  Anders and Carver didn't look as emo but were way too whiny.

I don't see anyone attacking Yvonne Strahovski for her apparently 'unnatural' hair and eye-brow combo.

I made my shep blonde because blondes are rare, so I wanted my girl to be special :)

It wouldn't matter who won, a large portion of people here would still whine about it till there pants fell off. Don't like then lump it then mod the game. Personally I like her.

I think there were positives about each of the different designs. Different people felt strongly about certain features or liked certain elements. While we were at SDCC, Jerry Holkins (Tycho from Penny Arcade) stopped by the Base and looked at the images. He didn't say which he liked best, but he did mention he liked the hair on Shepard #1 because you could tell by the way it looks that it grew back after her head was shaved. And having that element to her past was unstated coolness.

I can definitely see what he means and agree that is a cool element, My personal preference was for #4 as I thought it was a strong contrast to the default male and that there aren't enough hawt women of color in video games these days. Still, I can appreciate the blonde version as well.

The good thing about this is that there really was no "bad" choice.

The complaint that rings true isn't that any particular choice is bad, but that turning the selection into what amounted to a public beauty contest sends the wrong message.

I didn't hate the looks of the character, (Here's the selection, for anyone who hasn't already seen it.) and I thought it was pretty cool that Bioware let the fans help pick the design, but I can't help feeling just a tad disappointed in us, the community.  Really guys?*  They offered us one Combat Barbie amid 6 women (all of whom seemed to look a lot younger than shep's 29-31 yrs depending on how you view the timeline, but hey, that's Hollywood baby) and we went with the Barbie?  Granted, the tousled hairdo was cool and seemed to fit the Shep persona, and most of us femShepers will probably continue using our custom designs anyway, but it's still a small blow to see a gaming company struggling to make strides in acceptance and inclusiveness feature a typical and cliched version of feminine strength and heroism.  Thanks for trying Bioware, but apparantly, we're not ready for that kind of responsibility yet.  Maybe you should've started us off with a goldfish, saw how we did with that, and went from there.
Then again... maybe I'm just bitter that my choice was shot down...

*guys is being used here to encompass all genders, fyi

Asking which Shepard they find most appealing is helpful in that in for those who judge a game largely from its box-art (me included), it could help in some way. Besides, what is so wrong about picking which Shep we find most attractive?

Lots of things. Mass Effect is a game that relies heavily on the story and setting. That means, the main character impression needs to fit into that story and setting. Simply choosing the most attractive does not mean that that character is the most suited for the universe. If that was the case, they might as well paste a dead or alive character with large boobies in it as Shepard. Obviously none of us want that. This is important, especially for a promotional character. It needs to give the right impression about the game, not be attractive because of sexiness alone. That undermines what the game stands for.

Whether or not there is a reasonable explanation as to why she looks so young doesn't matter to me, personally. I'd just prefer it if my awesome galaxy-saving heroine looks like an adult.

However, this WAS essentially a beauty contest. "Beauty" may be the wrong term, but it was definitely a contest to determine what the predominancy of the fans felt was the best facial appearance of the character, so a comparrison to a "beauty contest" is not without some merrit.

However, as with all Shepards, male or female, deault or custom, Shepard is what YOU make of her/him. Just because there will be a default setting does not change the ability  to choose the story and personality of the character you play. I know there were suggestions of other ways to hold the choosing of the face, and all could have worked to varying degrees of success, but this was the way that we chose to do it. And, despite not everyone preferring the way that we did it, I think allowing our fans to actually chose something like this and including it in teh game was a pretty cool decision by the Dev and Marketing teams. :)

Exactly, or more to the point as others have said, to the people whining about the look of blondie femshep, there is this wonderful thing that comes with the game which allows you to make your own Shepard.

Yes, but a Dead or Alive character was not one of the choices (and that assumes that  characters from Dead or Alive are generally considered attractive...bleh. Sexualized, yes. Attractive... ). All the choices to a certain degree fit in Mass Effect, so in my opinion it was simply a matter of picking which Shepard you thought looked the best. Beauty is subjective so of course people disagree.

I'm all for not sexualizing the game, but I don't think any of the choices gave me the impression that they were going for sex-appeal. That, and I'm pretty sure that wasn't the point you were arguing for.

I don't believe in the notion that blondes are 'lesser' or 'stupid' I'm just tired of seeing them as the main woman or the 'hot' one in entertainment media, You see it most in video games though. I remember in the original uncharted Elena was changed from an brunette to a blonde because testers didn't find her 'hot enough'

I facepalmed then and I am now because it has again became truth with female Commander Shepard
