Not when he/she is insulting her it and saying it looks like a boy. Explain me how a woman can look like a boy?

I respect everyone's opinions, but I don't go around telling the ones I consider look like a "boy", or that I don't like because of that and that. That's disrespectful towards other people.

(S)He has right to say her opinion. And I have the same right to tell him/her to shut up, since his/her opinion and the way it was expressed was offensive.

I wouldn't have a problem If (s)he said (s)he didn't like #5. Saying it looks like a boy is being offensive.

There are females that have an androgynous look, and males that have an androgynous look. He/she thinks that femshep number 5 has an androgynous look. I don't agree with him, but I don't think is that offensive. Clearly you disagree with him, and you can said to him, but you should be more composed in your reaction.

I do think it's being offensive. It offended me, especially the way it was written with the repetitive (...) it seemed to me like it was intended to be an offensive / taunting post. I don't understand how she can look even remotely like a boy.

My reaction was fine. You can't expect me to be nice to someone who says my personal choice looks like a boy in a woman contest where you're supposed to vote for the most good-looking and feminine Shepard.

Besides everyone is bashing and complaining on her disrespectfully, calling her bimbo-shepard, barbie.... I have to be respectful when other people are not? Maybe it was not his intention to be offensive, I don't know, but he clearly could have chosen better words to express his opinion in a more respectful manner and taking into consideration that other people
might not like what he was going to say.

What did he expect? People to say: Oh hell yes it looks like a boy! Yes that's why it's in a female contest! They clearly put her in because she looked like a boy so that people that like boyish women would vote for her!

Anyways I'm done with the rant. He expressed his opinion right? I expressed mine. That's it. Period.

I just find it humorous that the reaction to this is similar(bordering on exactly the same as) to the reaction to the James Vega redesign.
It isn't a bad choice, people didn't vote for it because they weren't thinking. Haters are gonna hate. Trolls are gonna troll. That's all this is.

I think FemShep5 was a good choice.  I can only recall two instances of a badass blond female in space, that being Samus in Metroid and then that chick from Total Recall (who isn't a lead character and a villain).  In recent years, all blonde women have been good for in the entertainment media are love interests, pathetic action leads, and horror victims.

This choice shows that not only fans, but also Bioware, want to break stereotypical barriers.  When someone new picks up the game and plays as default FemShep, the character will exceed expectations that were established from her looks.  And that is what Shepard does: exceed expectations.

What stereotypical barriers are you talking about?  If you're talking about women being heroes in their own right fine, but if you're going to preface that by talking about female Shepard being blonde...wha?!  It seems people are regarding hair color as some kind of ethnicity.  I don't understand this and find it to be completely ridiculous.

If you're really interested in seeing something new the incumbent female Shepard is not straying too far from the barriers you're talking about.  The only difference being that she is female.

What exactly makes her "combat barbie" besides the fact that she has blonde hair?

Anything? No? Didn't think so.

What exactly is cliche about blonde chicks anyway? Name a blonde female video game main character.

Here are some big-time female characters and their hair color...

Lara Croft, Tomb Raider, brunette.
Sarah Kerrigan, StarCraft, redhead.
Alyx Vance, Half-Life 2, raven-haired.
Chell, Portal, raven-haired.
Bayonetta, raven(demon)-haired.
Chun-Li, Street Fighter, raven-haired.
Morrigan, Dragon Age, raven-haired.
Leiliana, Dragon Age, redhead.
Miranda Lawson, Mass Effect, raven-haired.
Ashley Williams, Mass Effect, raven-haired.

That's a lot of black haired chicks, actually. Maybe FemShep #4 is actually cliche'd.

I would have voted for #4 in a heart-beat, if her hair wasn't in her face. But seriously, #5 is cliche'd because she has blonde hair? Get back to me when she starts talking about shoes and pops her bubblegum. Until then, grow up.

That's a great point and it may be contributing to the outrage. So many women really, really feel insecure about whatever physical attribute they don't have that they perceive to be society's standard. For hair color, that means women who aren't blondes don't care one bit for the attention that they think blondes do get for their hair color. But video games, for the most part, aren't full of prominent blondes, so maybe these non-blonde gamers sort of came to see games as a haven away from what they perceive as endorsements of blondness as the beauty standard, so to see it rear its, errr, head, again in something they've previously loved (because of the presence of a customizable female character that they can make look however they want) is like a double insult AND a threat to their insecurities.

Now look, don't anybody go thinking I'm saying every woman is feeling like this. But I think when you see some of the over-the-top emotional responses, like Kim Richards in that PC Gamer piece and the bitterness towards the blonde image, like the OP, you have to believe there is more here than meets the eye.

ps: Also, just to add another (IMO) great dark-haired female lead: Victoria McPherson, from Still LIfe 1 & 2. Nice.

eta: shout out to Vic.

Well, I think its obvious to most of us that this "outrage" over blonde femShep is just people being unable to deal with their own insecurities and prejudices.  You don't need to go take the fun out of mocking them though, geeze.... :P

I know that Cammy from the Street Fighter series is a blond.

I think but I'm not 100% sure on:
Aries from Final Fantasy VII was a blond
Princess Peach Toadstool from the Super Mario Bros series was a blond.
Princess Zelda from The Legend of Zelda was a blond.
Samus from Metroid series was a blond.

I think some of the anti-blond sentiment comes from the cliche of the dumb blond bimbo (like Kelly Bundy from Married...With Children) and that a default blond femShepard would become a dumb blond bimbo.

Really? If anything, this shows that maleshep is about substance, while femshep is about apperarance, hardly a triumph for gender equality.

yeah because sheploo isn't based on a real life model or anything.

Model or not, he's still allowed to have a face that gets creased up when he scowls LIKE AN ACTUAL HUMAN FACE, unlike any of these ladies.

Sara Walker (Chuck)
Samus (Metroid
Samantha Carter. (Stargate SG-1)
just to name a few tough smart blondes who save the day all the time.
I think we've moved passed the dumb blonde stereotype and now have a new one.
Blondes who won't put up with that dumb stereotype.

I'm gonna laugh if one day there's a stereotype for people of every color hair BUT Blonde being ignorant and dismissive.

lol

As someone with black and brown hair, I'd hate it if I was bogged down with a stereotype because of it, so I feel for you blondes out there who have to read the kinds of things you've read in this thread.

Sad very sad days for female gamers

Who appointed you spokesperson for all female gamers? I must have missed that memo. As a female gamer I voted for 5 and I know plenty of other female gamers that did as well. It will be a happy day for me when they release the femshep trailer and blonde shep is the one featured. It will be a happy day for me when on 3-6-12 I pick up my collectors edition of Mass Effect 3 and blonde femshep is on the cover (not the only reason I'm gonna be happy that day, I'm finally gonna have ME 3 :Oand be able to play it but having blonde femshep on the cover will most definitely be a bonus). It might be a sad day for you and others out there but don't pretend you are speaking for all female gamers.

Depends on the game.  She's been more consistently blond in later appearances.

Yes! I still can't  believe we'll have blonde Shepard :crying:  I wanted unique strong female character instead it'll be male choseen Shepard because she is HAWT. I really don't see what's so special about her, maybe because i'm from north and pretty sick of all blondes. Sad very sad days for female gamers :crying::crying::crying::crying: but oh well it was pretty clear that bw and ea think about money and nothing else.

OK......... I read this thread and held my peace but seriously ^ Who are you?
Who are you?
Who are you that you decided you speak for me?
I am a 45 year old blonde female gamer who picked that pretty young blonde Shepard because I liked the way she looks...... I don't fancy her, I am completely hetero, I just liked her best. This thread is making me feel that I should think that makes me stupid and racist (it isn't working, btw... but I can't believe this attitude is being allowed to continue on BSN)
I don't need you, or anyone to be sad for me....... thank you very much it is quite presumptuous <_< I appreciate the effort, but it was wasted.... Aren't there some animal shelters or charity shops you could go and volunteer in? I mean, really.... speak up for people who actually DON'T have a voice and can't express themselves.... don't you waste another moment of your valuable time speaking for me (even if I agreed with you, which I don't.....)
My beautiful brunette daughter who is 17 also voted for the blonde one because she simply liked her best....
Here's the thing ~ beauty is subjective and more people liked blonde Shepard.... accept the things you cannot change..
As a Kaidan fan all I have to say is *haters gonna hate* :P
And I apologise if this appears rude, but the very premise of this thread is rude and insulting to people who are blonde or those who like it...... Why should the opinions of brunettes or redheads be considered more valuable and more serious?

Well yeah I wanted black shep to win, but I knew she wasn't going to, but am I pissed that blondie won? Not at all! I think she looks pretty awesome. The point I think the OP was trying to make was that it's sad that it was so predictable from the get go. Blondes are usually the standard of beauty, which is why so many people are resentful towards her. Some just wanted something different.

How is a white Shepard with a fake spray tan a black woman?

She looked black to me

Show some respect.

Would you like me bashing your choice and saying it looks too boyish, or too stupid? No, right? Then shut the hell up.

Besides it's just your opinion, not a fact.

31.000 people voted for her and disagree she looks like a boy. That's what matters. No one cares if you think it looks like a boy, and no one asked for your expert opinion on her looks. <_<

Angry much? Sorry he bashed her looks but at the end of the day do you really care? She still won. You said no one cares if he thinks she looks like a boy but obviously you do. :innocent:

I honestly just think their shouldn't have been a vote in the first place, those who get their choice rub it in and those who dont winge. Goodness knows why they couldn't have just tweaked the original default FemShep. Fair enough for those you get their Femshep on the cover but even though she's a good choice, she's not my FemShep. I don't mind her being on the box but I think if we had no choice but an edited original there would no issue. Whatever happened to be happy with what you are given. Alot of comments on this page have particularly annoyed me.

It shouldn't have been a choice for the most beautiful. Thats the exact problem with this world. It is all about conventional beauty not what should be realistic for a female soldier, she shouldnt have to be "perfect" but strong and willing, hair colour adds no contribution to what FemShep represents. Such as a blonde ManShep is just as strong as brunette ManShep.

I think the whole thing about blondes dying out in the future is funny. If blonde is almost nonexistant in the future then red hair IS nonexistant!

And some people on this thread need to calm down. I'm sure you know who you are. I don't think anyone here is trying to personally offend so don't take everything so seriously.

Oh, and I have to agree with some people who said that there would be less conflict if Bioware had just made one Shep, stuck with it, and never let fans vote at all. There would have been anger, but it would have been a case of what's done is done.

Last note: Wasn't a fan of 4s hair, but we definitely need a video game protagonist with some other race than caucasian (which is what I think OP was trying to say) I liked 3 and 6 because their race was kind of ambiguous.

He's probably talking about the stereotype that blonde women are dumb and stupid.

This.  A stereotype is a stereotype, whether it is hair color, eye color, skin, religion, job, etc.  Blonde women have been used as either tools of victimization (Look at Samus in the latest Metroid game) or as a sex symbol/incompetent bimbo (ex. Knight and Day, though I suppose the actress develops later on but still).  Seriously, the last badass female I have seen in film/game was Astrid in How to Train Your Dragon.

Just because she is a Navy/Marine officer doesn't mean she can't be attractive.  Contrary to popular belief, quite a few women in the military are very beautiful who still lead a successful, if suppressed, career.

Edit: I agree with the above posts though.  While I never liked Sheploo, I just don't see why a brand new default FemShep had to be chosen as the posterchild.  Plus, there should have been more options, and the other ethnic Shepard's really weren't done well IMO.

I really like the new FemShep, her look is just awesome! I don't really get the anti-blonde folks, clearly FemShep looks great blonde. Lady Hawke was brunette, and FemShep is blonde, both hair colors suit their character very well. It's especially nice to see that they're finally taking FemShep seriously, she's been the vastly superior Shep for so many years now, and while her previous appearance was cool in its own way, the fact is that they put a lot more effort into the male Shep's appearance, and promoted the male Shep exclusively, so now its nice to see the best Shep getting the attention she deserves. And its nice to see that as cool as she already looked, she's now going to look better than ever! It makes sense that since, for the first time in the series, fans are finally going to be shown that FemShep actually exists, they'd want her to look her very best for just such an occasion :) . And look her best she does! I applaud Bioware for this great decision, the community for voting for the best FemShep, it really is just a great day for everybody. Bioware has a superior Lead Character to promote and thus more people will play the game, female gamers have an even better looking FemShep to enjoy, male gamers have an even better looking FemShep to enjoy, everybody is a winner thanks to this fantastic news!
