I think FemShep5 was a good choice.  I can only recall two instances of a badass blond female in space, that being Samus in Metroid and then that chick from Total Recall (who isn't a lead character and a villain).  In recent years, all blonde women have been good for in the entertainment media are love interests, pathetic action leads, and horror victims.

This choice shows that not only fans, but also Bioware, want to break stereotypical barriers.  When someone new picks up the game and plays as default FemShep, the character will exceed expectations that were established from her looks.  And that is what Shepard does: exceed expectations.

What stereotypical barriers are you talking about?  If you're talking about women being heroes in their own right fine, but if you're going to preface that by talking about female Shepard being blonde...wha?!  It seems people are regarding hair color as some kind of ethnicity.  I don't understand this and find it to be completely ridiculous.

If you're really interested in seeing something new the incumbent female Shepard is not straying too far from the barriers you're talking about.  The only difference being that she is female.

He's probably talking about the stereotype that blonde women are dumb and stupid.

This.  A stereotype is a stereotype, whether it is hair color, eye color, skin, religion, job, etc.  Blonde women have been used as either tools of victimization (Look at Samus in the latest Metroid game) or as a sex symbol/incompetent bimbo (ex. Knight and Day, though I suppose the actress develops later on but still).  Seriously, the last badass female I have seen in film/game was Astrid in How to Train Your Dragon.

Just because she is a Navy/Marine officer doesn't mean she can't be attractive.  Contrary to popular belief, quite a few women in the military are very beautiful who still lead a successful, if suppressed, career.

Edit: I agree with the above posts though.  While I never liked Sheploo, I just don't see why a brand new default FemShep had to be chosen as the posterchild.  Plus, there should have been more options, and the other ethnic Shepard's really weren't done well IMO.

Maybe because default looks very plain compared to Sheploo.  Also have you guys forgotten what Jane Shepard even looks like?

I am glad that they decided to make a true default for FemShep or as I like to call her . . . SamShep!

Agreed, clearly the fem Shep default never got the care that the male did, they couldn't possibly put her in a trailer like that. Its good they put more effort into her design, who cares if you like it or not. There are people who don't like the male Shep because they feel he looks like every other general male character these days.

But the great thing is, your not stuck with either one. It would be one thing if you were forced to use them, then people could sort of have a beef, but since its not, what is the big deal, its a face you see for 5 seconds before you change it. I have more Fem Shep's than males and I never complained about how bad the default looks, I just never use her.

Last note: Wasn't a fan of 4s hair, but we definitely need a video game protagonist with some other race than caucasian (which is what I think OP was trying to say) I liked 3 and 6 because their race was kind of ambiguous.

You got something against caucasians? <_<

Looking through my videogame library I see lots of different ethniticies among both protagonists and antagonists, so I find your comment offensive given that it's a purely subjective statement based on a specific race you don't want to see in your game...

lol come on, lets be realistic here. Are you just trying to argue with that person, not to derail this thing going on a whole other tangent, but the massive slant towards white males or females as protagonist in video games can not be denied.

The female gaming community needs to take baby steps. The fact that a female character is going to be present on the box is an amazing thing in itself. I'm excited.

The fact that people compare her to a barbie or say that she isn't butch enough to be Commander Shepard makes me want to get a sex change so I don't have to put up with this bull**** anymore.

I understand that by putting a face on a box you are going to be representing several different types of females who play this game.

Sure, the one who you didn't like lost - but we should look at how this is going to impact the overall gaming industry rather than ****ing about character continuity or the fact that she doesn't look enough like you / a girl you'd hook up with. :/

This is seriously pathetic.

EDIT:
Also, just because someone is blonde or attractive doesn't immediately make them weak or pathetic.

D; I think more people are butthurt about what the OP wrote.
I'm frankly tired of seeing **** like this all over the internet.
Its making me way more upset than I should be getting about concept art on a box.

*repost'd from the femshep thread*

And THIS is why I think that a trailer that shows the CC, leading into the creation of BW's femShep, and displaying some of the game play would be really an excellent way to market femShep -- along with mShep (to a lesser degree).

Now, please don't misunderstand me, ladies-- I'm not saying that the two genders should get different marketing trailers when I say "to a lesser degree". If they decide to show a CC based trailer for femShep, they should obviously do the same for mShep.

However, Bioware can already safely count on a casual male audience to see their commercials for ME3, and purchase their title. Doing the same for a casual female audience ("casual" eliminates most women on this forum) will be more difficult.

If EA could even get two trailers for TV, one displaying femShep exclusively, one displaying mShep exclusively, each 29 seconds long (or however long the commercial restrictions are today), devote maybe 10 seconds to the CC leading into the creation of default fe(m)Shep, and the remaining 19 seconds to fast paced game play that would really help differentiate them from Halo and Gears of War.

*But plenty of people already like shooters, so why wouldn't they get this?*

Because of what "shooters" have turned into in the last five years -- social shooters. COD, Halo, Gears of War, they all have a key component that ME lacks: multiplayer. If your friends are playing a certain game together, the average consumer will want to join in (once again, this doesn't apply to everyone). Look at how much money the above shooters bring in, and tell me I'm wrong.

ME3 (thank the gods) doesn't have multiplayer. Therefore, it really has to sell itself on being more than just a SP exclusive shooter to compete with the other big titles. The average consumer doesn't know Bioware. The average consumer doesn't know Bungie either. But they do know what their friends and coworkers are playing.

With a trailer displaying the CC, you can reach out to not only casual gamers, but minorities, people of different age groups, and people who fit into groups like goths, hipsters, or whatever. You can still display the default Shepard in your trailer, but the CC shows casual viewers that they can play as whom ever they want. If you only show casual viewers the default Shepard, they won't know the option is there.

That is all.

The great thing is that there are as many if not more articles fine with femShep's new look. So all hope in humanity isn't lost quite yet.

What's wrong with being compared to Barbie? Barbie's 52 years old and looks fabulous. She has Ken following her around like a puppy dog, has tons of careers that she excels at, and has a wardrobe to die for. Barbie has been in all four branches of the US military, been to almost every country on the globe, and has owned plenty of homes, cars and other property. All while maintaining a pert figure and showcasing her glorious hair and sparkling jewelry. We should all accomplish as much as Barbie has. :D Seriously, people need to get away with all the femininity bashing. Femininity does not equal weakness. Far from it! ;)

What the op wrote is so full of butthurt he has extra helpings of butthurt to share with everyone else. Same with that article. People are too caught up in stereotypes to suggest a blonde, blued-eyed femshep is cliche, especially when there are so few blondes in the ME universe.

Thank you. I kind of exploded.
A lot of really interesting things regarding sex/gender have been happening in a lot of video games right now (Poison from Final Fight is getting a "real" gender and then Catherine came out. Its made me realize how I simply cannot empathize with most females and moreso with males. Gender identity crisis auuugh.) I'm getting really overwhelmed with a lot of the hate going around.

Then there was also people blaming females and homosexuals for Dragon Age 2 being terrible. (Taking away from character continuity and sacrificing resources on giving the player choices). Then you also have people using the Witcher 2 as an example of how less choices makes for a better game - when there is farrrr more that than just offering a female option.

Me too!
My boyfriend went to Evo and met two pretty famous transgenders. His friend thought one of them was actually a girl and found out that she wasn't.

Its always put sexuality in perspective for me. Its really interesting.

I don't much care which one won. They all look to be about 16 years old at most, which is ridiculous. I can live with the blonde, but would have preferred red. Blonde Shep has a very impractical hairdo, but it's not the worst one (Shep 4 covered that), and other than that she is not inferior to the other alternatives in any way.

The only issue with using Barbie as a comparison is that she sets unrealistic expectations for young women to aspire to be. As a fictional character - she has done way more than Shepard has. Using Barbie as a comparison to Shepard is pretty hilarious and puts this arguement in perspective. Especially when the term "Barbie" is used as an insult to make a girl seem useless, weak, and only concerned about her appearance.

Not all women wear makeup, or have long hair, or act a certain way. But I feel that #5s disheveled appearance gives a wide variety of girls an even playing field to work with. I don't wear make up, and I have short brown hair. But I also respect that some girls like being girly.

It's still a pretty funny (and accurate) comment. Hell, Barbie is nearly as qualified to be a Spectre as Shepard.

Most of the comments I saw posted were basically; she had the best eye color, the best skin-tone, and the best hair style, but she need to have (red/brown/auburn) hair. I personally voted twice. Once for the Scarlet Johanson lookalike (5) and the other for the Natalie Portman lookalike (1). I don't have anything against Shepard being a non-white character, I just preferred her to have long disheveled hair and a determined cold stare.
